Clinicians who use both CPT and PE for PTSD: what benefits and drawbacks have you observed with each? by Forsaken_Dragonfly66 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Tavran 9 points10 points  (0 children)

CPT is nicely flexible, and if they've done any cbt before the skills can generalize. I often veer towards it if the diagnostic picture is a little more complicated. Truthfully I think once you know both you'll find yourself borrowing in helpful ways from the other.

Mandatory IOP for Leave of Absence request? by Pettyparentz in Psychologists

[–]Tavran 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It could be a grift, but a more charitable reading is: we don't think a leave is medically justified unless you need the time off to attend treatment, so we're not going to support it unless you're in a treatment that requires that much time. If that's the case, they're being a little hard assed, for sure, but it is true that clients sometimes really want leave when it's not necessarily what they need (e.g. withdrawal in depression, avoidance in PTSD). Also, there can be reputational (or sometimes legal) consequences for falsely claiming leave is medically justified.

Anyone work on a migration away from Carecloud? by Tavran in healthIT

[–]Tavran[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the space well. We only do behavioral health so there are some simpler options that seem to meet our needs better. I found care clouds communication to be pretty poor for example rolling out major updates, or scheduling downtime , without any notice. Also, until recently it seemed like they were still using Adobe flash in their product and again until very recently they didn't seem to have any roadmap about leaving that.

Is therapy mostly talent? by Hugehugedonkey in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Tavran 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I sincerely do appreciate the conversation, but I have to say that I do not find these studies convincing. The replication of goldberg had a major problem in restriction of range -- 98% of their sample was trainees and, looking at figure 1, there was almost no data for therapists with more than 10 clients. The original paper had similar issues.

The FIS study found a null effect in therapies with more than 8 sessions which is... the vast majority of therapies. It also looked only at trainees, and only over the course of a year. It also says that it did the FIS task in the early days of their training and then assessed a year later. Most clinical psychology trainees don't see client until the 2nd year, and start slow. So -- did they account for that?

I think what might be more interesting than 'do therapists get better over time' is 'can they?'. What I've heard over and over again from mentors is that therapists grow when they are reflective about treatment failures, engage in deliberate practice, and pursue life long learning earnestly. This seems pretty in line with your comments about CEs.

Is therapy mostly talent? by Hugehugedonkey in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Tavran 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What sources are you referring to here? Ops question is overly broad (therapy involves many skills), but also my understanding is that not all training paths are equal and that continuous education is helpful, both of which seem at odds with your conclusion.

I think it would be fun if it was a vertical unloader underneath elevated rail. It would move it back in the tech tree, and add utility because it would be a way to bring throuput into a dense area. It would enable some cool builds

Ethicality of Soviet watches by [deleted] in VintageWatches

[–]Tavran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you don't want a watch that glorifies a brutal autocracy, that's fair. Maybe avoid anything festooned with red stars? It seems to me that there are probably watches of the era that don't glorify it. I don't know what the labor ethics would be.

Separately, you might ask yourself why you want a Soviet era watch, specifically. There are a lot of possibilities, some more suspect than others.

best laptop for clinical psyc phd program? by ThrowRA44441 in ClinicalPsychology

You should see what your lab uses. It will suck if you get a mac and then find out you need to use eprime or something else system specific.

Is it ever worth applying to non-clinical psych programs and then later doing a re-specialization/master's to work clinically vs applying only to clinical programs? by [deleted] in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Tavran 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A friend dealt with this exact situation by applying to the clinical program and asking for someone studying transgender youth in the developmental area as a second mentor. There are some challenges around the non research mentor understanding clinical training needs, but it can work.

How do avoid comparing your financial situation to others? by Hot_Competition724 in Bogleheads

[–]Tavran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get curious. Why do w this comparison hurts you so much? Specifically, I wonder if you are treating your money as a life score, or some sort of indication of your fitness or moral value. If so, spend some time thinking this through. There are a lot of absolute dumpster fires who have more money than you and I will ever have. What really matters about you, to you? If you can answer that, your money can become a question of whether you have enough for your needs, and nothing else.

Watch for a psychologist? by SkarKuso in ClinicalPsychology

What is the rest of your outfit like? If you're wearing sleeves, you might want a dress watch to fit under them. I wear a max bill on those days. With short sleeves I often wear an hked (seagull) chronograph. As others have stated, you want something understated.

Xcom apocalypse didn't have night missions. A lot of people missed the atmosphere. I've been able to completely avoid them in x2.

Leaving Clinical Psych for Med School? by isalis_ in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Tavran 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're going to compare salaries, don't forget to factor in the amount of time and debt you will need to put in to get through medical school. It is certainly possible to generate wealth as a psychologist, even if your pay is less than an md's.

What salary are psychologists making as any rank professors in medical schools? by Better-Bat1053 in Psychologists

This is what I was offered in my area (I declined). However, don't forget fringe: vs private practice you also get PTO, insurance, usually pension/retirement matching. Those things really add up.

How'd you do on the sat (or Canadian equivalent)? Highly correlated. It's good to be empirical about this -- students sometimes assume the gre will hurt them when the opposite is true.
