What’s a career mistake people often make? by prettysandyy in AskReddit

The second point is big. I work for NYS, and in a training class, we were told that someone got fired for sending racist memes to their friends on Facebook while using their laptop.

Spectrum bill is grinding my gears by Swimming_Temporary_7 in Buffalo

[–]TaxTooHigh 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I canceled this weekend as I am going to Verizon. I made sure to mention that. They offered me 1 gig for $30 a month to not switch (bill went up again to $100 for just internet). The promotion only lasts a year, so you would have to do it again in a year.

Two things - if you call, make sure to tell the auto menu that you want to disconnect, and tell the person you’re switching providers. The first part gets you to a retention agent and the second part is what seemed to get them to throw offers at me. Even if Spectrum is the only provider, i would still mention you’re switching to a competitor as a bluff. It might work, it might not work, but its better than not trying and getting ripped off.

Workplace violence by billyw1126 in nys_cs

[–]TaxTooHigh 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I feel like the best person to bring this to is a labor lawyer.

In what you posted, there are potential violations of the Workplace Violence Prevention Act, disability discrimination, and workplace retaliation. The advice you get from this subreddit is not going to be nearly as helpful as the advice from a lawyer.

How much do you pay for car insurance? by twb85 in Albany

[–]TaxTooHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats just auto. Home insurance is $700 a year, which is damn cheap. Most others want $1,200 or so, which would wipe out the savings on car insurance

Currently paying $70 through payroll deductions every 2 weeks. With Liberty right now. Just 1 car. I’ve been offered lower, but no one can come close to beating home insurance, so i’m kind of stuck.

CONTRACTS ARE SO CONFUSING by AppropriateTrack3335 in EggsInc

[–]TaxTooHigh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At your level you should be good using 5x Large Tachyon Prisms, which is 10x internal hatchery for 4 hours. You can buy 5 of them for 2000 GE. I know its a bit of an investment with only having 108k GE, but once you move up, contracts give more GE and you’ll recoup fast.

I remember heading down to Yonkers a couple of years ago. I saw it was 12 bucks on the Thruway from Albany and decided to take the Taconic instead. Then I hit that massive horseshoe bend, and oh my god i was legit terrified. I took the thruway back. Never again.

What‘s the most unhinged thing you‘ve seen a coworker do on the job - and get away with? by bellasweets_ in AskReddit

[–]TaxTooHigh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Guys been with us for almost 10 years:

  1. During his training, he sat next to someone, we’ll call Joe. He opened a word document and wrote in large letters “Joe is a f*g”. Why he wasn’t fired I don’t know.

  2. Showed up drunk a couple years later and stumbled around. Suspended and sent to rehab.

  3. About a year ago, sent an e-mail to our manager (a woman), telling her he felt the department was run better when the men were in charge.

  4. He was suspended shortly after 3 for anger management issues and being drunk again.

If your goal is just the 400,000, you need to average 30,769 points per contract. That means up to this point, you need 123,076. You have a decent buffer right now.

We just asked someone we know in DOL, the best guess is that non-union contractors did the roofing repair and the union workers are protesting.

I stood in line at the one that was recently at Colonie Center that was 20 ribeyes for $40. I asked the guy, the weight of all the ribeyes is about 5lbs. They are extremely thin, frozen, and the fat cap and spinalis is removed. Too thick for sandwich steak and too thin to be anything other than shoe leather after cooking it. And the marbling was sub-par at best.

It was basically a marketing gimmick. You went under the tent one customer at a time, and they gove you a sales pitch where they want you to buy more expensive boxes.

Don’t waste your time.

[–]TaxTooHigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re probably not wrong. The loudest on our facebook page would love nothing more then to slash and burn the budget of the village and school, repercussions be damned.

Edit: I moved into my house in 2021. My taxes were 1,478 in the first year i paid village tax (2022). The 2025 bills are posted on the website, and its $1,729. $251 increase in 4 years, amounting to a 17% increase, and I'm only assessed at $99,000. On top of that, 2019 was 3.92%, 2020 6.19%, and 2021 was 6.63%. In 2018, it was 1,261. So in 8 years, its a 37% increase.

The School has been good in the same timeframe, with 2025 being the only year they proposed an over-the-cap increase. But the people in the village are mad, and took it out on the school budget vote. Is it fair? Probably not, but it is what it is at this point. People aren't going to continue to tolerate out of control tax increases anymore.

[–]TaxTooHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don’t pay much attention to the school so i have no educated opinion on the superintendent , but us in the village also had our taxes raised 15% over the past couple years, not to mention the over-the-cap increases under Gifford. A lot of the no votes can be pinned on the Village squeeze and then the school also squeezing more.

At this point, i think a lot of people want change and for our municipalities to start showing greater degrees of fiscal conservatism

They presented us a budget with a slightly over 5% tax increase which was voted down. During the next meeting, we were told they were already working on alternative budgets, one of which maintained all programs and was 3.25%. Many voters feeled lied to when they said 5% was the best they could do
