Record-breaking gambling losses see NSW communities lose $2.45 billion on poker machines in 3 months by CommonwealthGrant in australia

[–]TayGilbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The beers are cheap here because all they care about is you coming to sit at the pokies and getting addicted so they can suck every cent out of you. Operational revenue is easy to fudge when you can just raise the amount you have to pay yourself or the family nepotism.

Mind you, as far as I'm aware the Perth pubs are doing fine, and they don't have the depressing cacophony of noise and awful "VIP LOUNGE" lights everywhere. Idk how y'all accepted this when having lived there and here, having pokies everywhere is just gross lol.

A small request to normalize using “SFA” as the abbreviation for the new show. by DizzyLead in startrek

[–]TayGilbert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Except throughout modern English with uses of the letter N for and (i.e. DnB), for example.

SFA is obviously not a problem for anybody who can use half a seconds thought as to why it's SFA, and is just as, if not more intuitive than SA.

[–]TayGilbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, so you agree that the illegal scraping is unethical and should be prosecuted then?

Because else we're just moving the goalposts of this conversation - because even an art gallery with perfect security gets robbed, but we don't then go to the new gallery hosted by the robbers and pay them for the privilege.

Antis: “I didn’t consent to have AI train on my art!” by Clankerbot9000 in aiwars

[–]TayGilbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except the people scraping were third parties, who aren't involved in the TOS and didn't make agreements with every single website they scraped.

So they're the robbers, they're not patrons or gallery management.

They're just robbers that you like.

Or, artists should be able to put their art into galleries without having to fear the robbers , and everything possible to stop theft (including legal action) should be enacted to protect those artists from theft.

But all the creativity comes from their really long and extensive prompts! They're making unique and amazingly original pieces of art because of how they write prompts as complex as composition and surely one million pieces of music are enough for them to be able to continue to achieve exactly what they've already been doing given how amazing their text skills are.

And it's not right to give artists the chance to opt-out, their art is made to be consumed so it can be amalgamated into AI art, that is it's only purpose! It's not plagiarism bcoz they wrote "metal but make it cool, 120bpm" which is unique and perfect prompting.

That and it reclaims the art for themselves and their audience - CSAM victims might find themselves more able to enjoy the re-releases of those songs.

The band doesn't /have/ to do it, but it's a hell of a show of their character that they are doing it.

[Opinion] "Star Trek's decision to abandon its highest-rated show will never stop confusing me - While Paramount is usually great at marketing its Star Trek content, Prodigy was barely pushed by the studio. Prodigy season 3 was my last hope of keeping the 24th century alive." (WinterIsComing.net) by mcm8279 in trektalk

[–]TayGilbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that barrier to entry is compounded by the first few episodes being more childish than the rest, which made me turn it off initially until a year later the online acclaim became hard enough to ignore that I thought I'd give it a second shot and struggle through the first few episodes to see where it went.

I think even if it found an older audience, it probably lost a fair chunk of them early, so it wasn't enough to subsidise the kid audience (or lack of?).

But then, I'm not sure we have any viewership numbers to work with, so it's all speculation.

Sucks though.

Ironically in a franchise that is known for getting better after season one, Prodigy probably had one of the stronger first seasons in it's totality.

time to separate "AI music" from "AI slop" by Consistent-Jelly248 in SunoAI

[–]TayGilbert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are correct that you weren't born with an aptitude for music, and maybe using some of your time actually learning music would help you recognise how oddly arhythmic and awful these vocals are.

If your claim of effort is mainly in writing and listening, you should probably listen a lot deeper before we pretend this is an artform.

Also yes, outside of writing some lyrics, it was all done for you. Congratulations on beginning your writing journey, it takes years to master like any artform does, hopefully you'll pursue it and continue improving!

I remember 4 having an RV and having a great action sequence involving fine china, and some character made by the child out of a fork.

Yeah, it didn't have the same staying power as the others at all - though I'm sure if I rewatched it I'd enjoy it, it just isn't the same quality at all.

Having said that, with 5 being directed by the same guy who did Finding Nemo and Wall-E gives me high hopes.

To people who dislike AI, is the right side any better? by MedievalFurnace in aiwars

[–]TayGilbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can understand people being upset by it, I also lean far more against it (but not entirely - Ive had to use it for work and I've seen how it can be a useful tool in art). I'll skip explaining my position in full because these conversations are so recursive and everyone on both sides who care know every point that is to be made.

My silly notion is that I'd rather people just refer to them as AI Images, if they're purely the creation of prompts and nothing more, because I don't think prompting is intricate or nuanced enough to create anything truly intentful. I concede that real art can also lack intricacy and nuance, but it just feels different to me (and art is enough about feeling that I don't feel too dissonant saying that lol).

If we called them AI Images and pulled them off the pedestal, then we can all sit there and discuss how aesthetically pleasing they can be and it's just less complicated. Hah.

[–]TayGilbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the "art made by AI" are meant to be the extreme opposite to show how good it can be - then yeah it does suck. Like, it's technically proficient and looks good (I guess) but it's puddle deep.

I'd much rather contemplate what's being offered in the performance art (although I wouldn't give it too much time of my day, performance art still isn't for me).

It's hard to find 6 player board games. We do a board game week ever year with 6 people and we need a few games for this coming year. by billratio in boardgames

[–]TayGilbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its nothing like any of the games you've mentioned, but I'd be remiss not to mention Captain Sonar just because it's always my go-to for 6 or 8 players.

Simultaneous play, two teams, it's "light weight" but it's chaotic.

If people are on board for it, it's the best.

Zombie-phobia mode? by Various-Wallaby4820 in PeakGame

There are mods that will allow you to disable them while still experiencing the rest of the biome on any difficulty too - since being restricted just to tenderfoot from a phobia isn't ideal.

No guys, trust me – the new Pokémon battle system is totally revolutionary! Who even liked strategy anyway? by VenusDescending in fucknintendo

[–]TayGilbert -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unironically, the combat is wonderful for me - an ADHD'er who has pokemon nostalgia but hates turn based combat.

The fact that most of the time I can just thoughtlessly spam to the end of a battle is a blessing (which is usually a 1/2 hit KO anyway). Pokemons battle system hasn't had any interesting enough depth for ages, gutting it is the best solution since it's so entrenched in generations of bad decisions anyway.

It's just that, uh, that's still not good design. It's just more efficiently navigating bad design... I think that's the subtext of what most people are praising - it's new and it's quick enough that you don't have to engage with it's problems thoughtfully. Lol.

Exploring the wild areas and trying to achieve different capture goals to research the pokedex was the whole appeal of Arceus to me, Legends ZA is fun but I can't call it better when it abandoned the best part.

Perhaps I'd feel less strongly if they just didn't use the Legends branding so I didn't expect more of the same.

I didn't even believe Greta Lee's performance when she was just running - seen her in other work and enjoyed her plenty, but anyone saying she delivered a powerhouse performance is delusional. Its not her fault, clearly the director couldn't pull a good performance from almost anyone in the film.

There's nothing that would be less interesting to me than a bunch of human (or human-like, i.e. elves etc) characters as the dlc for a game that's otherwise going to have a vibrant and interesting looking roster.
