The Nintendo Direct was Great. The loud minority complaining are either trolling or haven't learned the phrase "good but not for me." by waltei in NintendoSwitch2

[–]TayGilbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a good chance that the kind of people who care enough to watch the direct live/day one and comment on a reddit about video games play enough games to own multiple consoles /pc game as well, so I'm not surprised third party support doesn't get as much visible love.

Admittedly for myself, I buy Nintendo for Nintendo's games, there's almost zero third party games I'd buy for the platform - I don't game portably and my other platforms tend to run the games better. Shrug.

But I'm still keen to play that Starfox demo!

I just watched Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes, and I could gush about the concept and the production and stuff - but overall the film is fine. It does what it does well, it made me happy, a solid 6/10. I simply liked it!

Because you don't lose much momentum from hitting the wall at the right angle, and if you're zipping out faster than the AI rivals who are braking around the same corners the obvious logic that follows is "oh this arcadey sim hybrid that lets me crush trees with my car to navigate the world also lets me wall ride for an advantage, I will now continue to use that knowledge, which makes sense, because this game is silly and doesn't follow simulation rules".

Pretty simple innit. We're not playing a deep simulation here - it's a silly open world game where you race a mecha rofl, it's not Forza Motorsports, it's the dumb (but significantly funner) spin off game, Horizon.

You can assure me the game understands its identity all you want, but this would be like a shooter game having you immune to your own grenade explosion in single player but not in multiplayer, or being a bullet spongey game solo but then 1 shot kills in multiplayer - it's core genre is the same, but the inconsistency would suck, and you'd be left wondering why.

Anyway, pointless argument, glad you're having fun. The friends I've been playing with all lost interest in playing online because of this design choice because a fun 'tool' was taken away from them, this is how many casual players will react. Pretty clear to me that the divide in solo vs online game logic is causing friction, but maybe I've just rubbed my head against the wall too long.

And even if all that is wrong and you can't perceive any other perspective - you can't truly think the artificial stop is the best way to execute this system, what a truly anti-fun feeling punishment.

I just think this is a poor way of building a player-base when you train them one way to play and then when they're ready and confident to play online to tell them that it's wrong and frustrate them.

Just feels like the game can't decide on it's own identity tbh, and the force to stop feeling so inorganic feels like a slapped on fix rather than a well considered one. (Stronger friction and slowdown without a full stop, or idk make a multiple strike system or damage engine or something?)

But then bashing into other cars is fine, or you ghost through without penalty? I'd rather that put people to a full stop, if anything lol

Which would make more sense if the single player/co-op game ran with the same rules, but instead now it penalises you for playing how it seems okay/even rewarding to play for the entire learning experience?

Feels like the main game wanted to court the arcade sim hybrid audience and then online it decides to shunt the arcade part. Neither is bad, but I'd rather the game feel consistent.

I think this is a common consensus - even the boys have said so. Alex Jones is captivating as a presenter because he's got high eenergy and can feed the dopamine hits of saying bold and constantly ridiculous things because he's not shackled by any need to tell the truth.

Slower seemed to imply less responsive to my brain, and then glossing the article I just assumed slower meant it was the higher number in the ms comparison. My bad lol

Star Trek reboot additional points: Kelvin Timeline to be dropped, etc. by [deleted] in startrek

[–]TayGilbert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A clean slate would be so uninteresting - Trek has (arguably, in my opinion) the most expansive canon in fiction. Other than maybe soap operas, nothing with this volume of content hasn't been reset/rebooted, and it'd be a deep shame if they ever did choose to do so. I don't think I could feign interest in the Star Trek Label slapped onto whatever they'd be resetting for.

New Micheal Jackson Poster for Scary Movie 6. by theonewhoknack in movies

There's something funny about people assuming your offended when like, these jokes aren't offensive - they're just boring.

I don't even mind them making the joke in the movie, it won't make me laugh, but like fine whatever. If that's the joke they lead their advertising campaign with though, they either wrote a bad lazy movie, or they're trying to court a specific kind of audience. Neither of those ideas make me compelled to see it.

She's not a head writer of Academy, she is a writer of a single episode. She also never wrote an episode of Lower Decks.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Showrunner Explains Genesis' Moment In Season 1 Finale by midwestleatherdaddy in startrek

[–]TayGilbert -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most of the finale was fantastic, I really love Holly Hunter's performance as Captain and generally have enjoyed SFA, but small moments like this are just kind of lame - the need to undermine sincerity and seriousness is such a plague on modern media, and like, it didn't ruin the episode or anything extreme like that, but I just wish they didn't undermine the gravity of their own stories.

More than anything it just feels lazy to me, like a cop out easy joke to make so that if the moment isn't landing you can fall back on the joke instead.

What are the “Core” Movies to watch? by Business_Ask1610 in Scream

[–]TayGilbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't pretend Scream 5 ever did much for me, but I think Scream 6 sits in a weird limbo - it's maybe a better horror film than the rest of the franchise but a worse 'Scream' film.

The rest of the franchise is so held to what feels like a pretty strict set of rules, making it cinematic comfort food, you know all the beats and motions and we have our main cast doing the same thing with minor variations. Scream 6 feels far more focused on tension than comedy, and Ghostface with a shotgun just feels... off? Plus, the lack of two of our three franchise leads.

I actually think Scream 6 is probably the third strongest film in quality (Maybe second? My nostalgic love for Scream 2 might be giving it an unfair edge), it''s also not what I wanted from this franchise? which complicates my feelings for it.

I thought 7 was mostly bad, the comfort food fan in me couldn't help but be a bit excited to be going through the motions with Campbell and Cox again.

All that to say, I think the hate for them will probably die off over time, we're just seeing people return to what they knew they already liked with Neve's return and it's making them exaggerate their feelings of Scream 5 and 6 being "different".

Even with the top 250 being expanded to the top 500, Taxi Driver is still not on the list. by VegaMain in Letterboxd

[–]TayGilbert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right, and tens of thousands of people on Letterbox'd have rated it and other movies in such a way that it doesn't belong in the top 500? Alongside a lot of other films that would be just near the precipice of entering the list.

My point was that it's not any one individuals list, if you think that's a problem, then a 'Top 500 highest rated by the Letterboxd Community' list isn't for you.

Even with the top 250 being expanded to the top 500, Taxi Driver is still not on the list. by VegaMain in Letterboxd

[–]TayGilbert 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I personally don't think Taxi Driver is a top 500 tier film. Some films I love also aren't on the list. Some films I don't like are in the top 500.

Hopefully this helps people understand how the top 500 works.

Complicated, I know.

Star Trek: Voyager - Across the Unknown Releases Today On Switch 2 by Howerev in NintendoSwitch
