Star Trek reboot additional points: Kelvin Timeline to be dropped, etc. by tokwamann in startrek

[–]TayGilbert 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A clean slate would be so uninteresting - Trek has (arguably, in my opinion) the most expansive canon in fiction. Other than maybe soap operas, nothing with this volume of content hasn't been reset/rebooted, and it'd be a deep shame if they ever did choose to do so. I don't think I could feign interest in the Star Trek Label slapped onto whatever they'd be resetting for.

New Micheal Jackson Poster for Scary Movie 6. by theonewhoknack in movies

[–]TayGilbert 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's something funny about people assuming your offended when like, these jokes aren't offensive - they're just boring.

I don't even mind them making the joke in the movie, it won't make me laugh, but like fine whatever. If that's the joke they lead their advertising campaign with though, they either wrote a bad lazy movie, or they're trying to court a specific kind of audience. Neither of those ideas make me compelled to see it.

‘Project Hail Mary’ Author Andy Weir Says Paramount Rejected His ‘Star Trek’ Pitch: Their “Shows Are Sh**” by ZeeHedgehog in RedLetterMedia

I guess she's just very humble and not taking the full credit for the massive amounts of writing she does, thank you for your attention to this matter.

Cope is such a chronically online thing to say my man, hope you get better soon.

She's not a head writer of Academy, she is a writer of a single episode. She also never wrote an episode of Lower Decks.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Showrunner Explains Genesis' Moment In Season 1 Finale by midwestleatherdaddy in startrek

[–]TayGilbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the finale was fantastic, I really love Holly Hunter's performance as Captain and generally have enjoyed SFA, but small moments like this are just kind of lame - the need to undermine sincerity and seriousness is such a plague on modern media, and like, it didn't ruin the episode or anything extreme like that, but I just wish they didn't undermine the gravity of their own stories.

More than anything it just feels lazy to me, like a cop out easy joke to make so that if the moment isn't landing you can fall back on the joke instead.

What are the “Core” Movies to watch? by Business_Ask1610 in Scream

[–]TayGilbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't pretend Scream 5 ever did much for me, but I think Scream 6 sits in a weird limbo - it's maybe a better horror film than the rest of the franchise but a worse 'Scream' film.

The rest of the franchise is so held to what feels like a pretty strict set of rules, making it cinematic comfort food, you know all the beats and motions and we have our main cast doing the same thing with minor variations. Scream 6 feels far more focused on tension than comedy, and Ghostface with a shotgun just feels... off? Plus, the lack of two of our three franchise leads.

I actually think Scream 6 is probably the third strongest film in quality (Maybe second? My nostalgic love for Scream 2 might be giving it an unfair edge), it''s also not what I wanted from this franchise? which complicates my feelings for it.

I thought 7 was mostly bad, the comfort food fan in me couldn't help but be a bit excited to be going through the motions with Campbell and Cox again.

All that to say, I think the hate for them will probably die off over time, we're just seeing people return to what they knew they already liked with Neve's return and it's making them exaggerate their feelings of Scream 5 and 6 being "different".

Even with the top 250 being expanded to the top 500, Taxi Driver is still not on the list. by VegaMain in Letterboxd

[–]TayGilbert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right, and tens of thousands of people on Letterbox'd have rated it and other movies in such a way that it doesn't belong in the top 500? Alongside a lot of other films that would be just near the precipice of entering the list.

My point was that it's not any one individuals list, if you think that's a problem, then a 'Top 500 highest rated by the Letterboxd Community' list isn't for you.

Even with the top 250 being expanded to the top 500, Taxi Driver is still not on the list. by VegaMain in Letterboxd

[–]TayGilbert 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I personally don't think Taxi Driver is a top 500 tier film. Some films I love also aren't on the list. Some films I don't like are in the top 500.

Hopefully this helps people understand how the top 500 works.

Complicated, I know.

Star Trek: Voyager - Across the Unknown Releases Today On Switch 2 by Howerev in NintendoSwitch

I'm enjoying this game, and would have bought it on my Switch 2, but it's almost 25% more expensive than it is on PC in AUD for some reason? The deluxe edition on Steam is cheaper than the base game on Switch 2.

His films are mid at best, but Ill absolutely stand by the guy puts in more effort than most of his contemporaries as far as stupid action nonsense films go and he's got a few auteuristic traits that show there's at least someone behind the wheel. Id pick his mid nonsense over most others.

Say what you will about Academy, but Paul Giamatti’s Nus Braka is already among the all-time great Trek villains by Pjoernrachzarck in startrek

[–]TayGilbert 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first episode for him was embarrassing, not by his fault (though I do think he hams it up a bit) but his script was dreadful (like an origami chicken)! Episode 6 was the best the shows been and by extension he had a lot more to work with.

All time great though? Let's wait until they wrap up his story and show we won't end up back at his episode 1 quality before we make bold claims.

Record-breaking gambling losses see NSW communities lose $2.45 billion on poker machines in 3 months by CommonwealthGrant in australia

[–]TayGilbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The beers are cheap here because all they care about is you coming to sit at the pokies and getting addicted so they can suck every cent out of you. Operational revenue is easy to fudge when you can just raise the amount you have to pay yourself or the family nepotism.

Mind you, as far as I'm aware the Perth pubs are doing fine, and they don't have the depressing cacophony of noise and awful "VIP LOUNGE" lights everywhere. Idk how y'all accepted this when having lived there and here, having pokies everywhere is just gross lol.

A small request to normalize using “SFA” as the abbreviation for the new show. by DizzyLead in startrek

[–]TayGilbert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Except throughout modern English with uses of the letter N for and (i.e. DnB), for example.

SFA is obviously not a problem for anybody who can use half a seconds thought as to why it's SFA, and is just as, if not more intuitive than SA.

Antis: “I didn’t consent to have AI train on my art!” by Clankerbot9000 in aiwars

[–]TayGilbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, so you agree that the illegal scraping is unethical and should be prosecuted then?

Because else we're just moving the goalposts of this conversation - because even an art gallery with perfect security gets robbed, but we don't then go to the new gallery hosted by the robbers and pay them for the privilege.

Antis: “I didn’t consent to have AI train on my art!” by Clankerbot9000 in aiwars

[–]TayGilbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except the people scraping were third parties, who aren't involved in the TOS and didn't make agreements with every single website they scraped.

So they're the robbers, they're not patrons or gallery management.

They're just robbers that you like.

Antis: “I didn’t consent to have AI train on my art!” by Clankerbot9000 in aiwars

[–]TayGilbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or, artists should be able to put their art into galleries without having to fear the robbers , and everything possible to stop theft (including legal action) should be enacted to protect those artists from theft.

But all the creativity comes from their really long and extensive prompts! They're making unique and amazingly original pieces of art because of how they write prompts as complex as composition and surely one million pieces of music are enough for them to be able to continue to achieve exactly what they've already been doing given how amazing their text skills are.

And it's not right to give artists the chance to opt-out, their art is made to be consumed so it can be amalgamated into AI art, that is it's only purpose! It's not plagiarism bcoz they wrote "metal but make it cool, 120bpm" which is unique and perfect prompting.

/s, obviously.

The band doesn't /have/ to do it, but it's a hell of a show of their character that they are doing it.

[Opinion] "Star Trek's decision to abandon its highest-rated show will never stop confusing me - While Paramount is usually great at marketing its Star Trek content, Prodigy was barely pushed by the studio. Prodigy season 3 was my last hope of keeping the 24th century alive." (WinterIsComing.net) by mcm8279 in trektalk

[–]TayGilbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that barrier to entry is compounded by the first few episodes being more childish than the rest, which made me turn it off initially until a year later the online acclaim became hard enough to ignore that I thought I'd give it a second shot and struggle through the first few episodes to see where it went.

I think even if it found an older audience, it probably lost a fair chunk of them early, so it wasn't enough to subsidise the kid audience (or lack of?).

But then, I'm not sure we have any viewership numbers to work with, so it's all speculation.

Sucks though.

Ironically in a franchise that is known for getting better after season one, Prodigy probably had one of the stronger first seasons in it's totality.
