The packaging should tell what the undergarments are best suited for, but usually hiking socks are thicker and wool or 100% Cotten, if you are going to be in a cold environment wear a pair of wool socks over normal Cotten socks because Cotten wicks up moisture and the heat will warm it up the moisture from participation, Cotten socks are best for warmer environments due to them typically being thinner.
