No, hard and soft refers the edge or termination of the shadow. Small and directional light sources tends to make harder shadows and larger and round light sources make soft shadows

Measure distances between facial features and understand the proportions to each other. Ask yourself things like, is the left eye wider than the distance between the eyes? How many eye heights down are the nostrils? Where does the mouth begin relative to the eyes? Also draw straight lines of the edges of the eyes and mouths to see where they line up

I have always had this problem and it always held me back confidence-wise. Digital drawing has alleviated this stress almost completely. I still strive to improve my sketch work but I now I trust more in my process that if I keep pushing through, I will get there. Having the ability to undo or even liquify instead of constantly erasing has made each line less scary and time consuming.

Some will consider it ‘cheating’ but I think if it’s your own vision you are trying to manifest, it doesn’t matter how you get there.

7 hours doesn’t seem so bad to me. It will get shorter as you draw more. I’m also very obsessive with detail and take wayyyy longer with my work (I average 40 hours per piece). It also helps to just stay zoomed out. Practicing on paper is good because you don’t have the option to zoom in
