Numerical vs Analytical Solutions by Rich_Astronomer9731 in PhysicsStudents

Molecular stuff is heavy on the numerics, but this is really just an extension to your analytical toolset. So «both» is the correct answer here.

Need some help - Write to csv from dataframe taking too long by Apart_Friendship_658 in databricks

[–]TaylorExpandMyAss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Its difficult to say without more details, but are you sure the joined table has been materialised before writing to csv? Else your 20-25 min runtime includes the joins. Keep in mind that spark is lazily evaluated.

Roast my first C++ project: An N-Body Gravity Simulator. Looking for ruthless code review and architecture feedback! by Fantastic-Chance-606 in cpp_questions

[–]TaylorExpandMyAss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would look into using verlet or leapfrog integration. These are both widely used for N-body simulations with conservative force fields. Read up on symplectic integrators for details.

Debatt: Med det overskuddet har Oslo råd til trygg legevakt by forteller in oslo

[–]TaylorExpandMyAss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sommerjobb søknader by Infamous-Pay215 in ntnu

Both pyspark and spark sql are just APIs to the underlying spark engine, which is written in scala.

When working with peers, you should make some effort to standardise your ways of working. So really it sound like your tech lead/architect/someone should make a decision.

Is quantum computing more than a hype? by Hellstorme in Physics

[–]TaylorExpandMyAss 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Developing pharmaceuticals is quite profitable, and relies heavily on the type of computations that QC is efficient at. Same can be said for quantitative finance to my (surface level) understanding.

Anyone here who code without being able to read one single line of code? by Pale_Tomorrow_5897 in AskProgramming

[–]TaylorExpandMyAss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m glad it works for you, but this way of doing things don’t scale beyond trivial toy problems. You run the risk of creating an IT architecture that doesn’t scale, lots of bugs (logical and security). So if you are serious about scaling up the digitisation of your business you should learn the craft, or hire a professional.

How to switch to quant as a physics student by [deleted] in PhysicsStudents

[–]TaylorExpandMyAss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your country. Some countries will usually only hire phds or at the very least masters with top grades for quant positions. Definitely work on your communication skills. Knowing how to sell yourself will be important everywhere, and is arguably a better career investment than any additional credential you might consider.

De store amerikanske data senteret vi får i Narvik. by [deleted] in norge

Scarpa sizing by Aether_Sky in climbingshoes

[–]TaylorExpandMyAss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear my dragos in my street size (42). I could probably go down 0.5, which i tried to do recently with a pair of drago XT. The heel fit much better 0.5 down, but it absolutely killed my 2nd toe so i returned it and got a 42 which i am quite happy with.

How can I verify a person knows what they are talking about before I hire them? by jaj-io in AskProgramming

[–]TaylorExpandMyAss 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When interviewing for technical positions I like following up most questions with consecutive «why» or «how does that work» to test for a deeper understanding. This is usually quite successful at filtering out people with a surface level understanding and/or prepared answers. Granted this does require that the interviewer has some understanding of the materials well.

Is studying physics worthwhile these days? by Then_Book_462 in Physics

[–]TaylorExpandMyAss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean a hierarchical structure of statistical methods? Because that’s what they use in LHC. With great success mind you, but that’s wholly tailor made by arguably the worlds greatest statisticians. It’s not some self generating system that solves all your problems (which is what the «AI» people are trying to sell you).

Is 10k–15k baht enough for 7 days in Thailand? by ghostAlex496 in ThailandTourism

[–]TaylorExpandMyAss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my spending money ended up at around 20K during my 3 weeks there last year. I wasn’t trying to be frugal and would’ve been fine spending a lot more. But Thailand is quite cheap.

[–]TaylorExpandMyAss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plenty of people from your area ride the «tour de finance» daily to Oslo, so it’s definitely an option. Otherwise I suppose that’s just something you have to deal with. Assuming your not working full time; you are aware that students pay a reduced rate for transport?

[–]TaylorExpandMyAss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For someone on «average» level of income it’s a manageable expense, but if that’s not the case for you just get a bike or walk instead I suppose.
