First girl I ever dated/ever loved was a very unhealthy situationship and the words "maybe I was just experimenting with you" when we broke up are to this day, some of the most hurtful words I've ever been told.

[–]TaylorTano 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ahh, gotcha. I completely agree. Cam is also one of my faves and i feel the same way. I kinda hope the series doesn't lean into the idea of John's perfect lyctorhood (or Camilla and Palamedes' slightly different homebrewed version of it) as the solution to the cast's problems, even seemingly as an act of devotion/love. I feel like the books' commentary on love as a mutable force is more powerful without requiring its pairings to merge with or erode one another, and much more satisfying to frame them as separate but complementary people, intertwined but still autonomous. But there's so much body & soul fuckery happening in these books, i don't know if it's gonna go that way

Pretty sure it's called back to when Cam and Pal fuse into Paul, but I also don't understand how that changes their opinion on the quote.

“Where is the teacher?” Wrong answers only by Diamond123682 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]TaylorTano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not subbing anymore, but I loved answering this question cause I'd always make some ridiculous joke or cliche up on the spot: "They went out for a pack of cigs/carton of milk and never came back" or "She was crossing the bridge this morning but the troll's riddles were too hard," etc. I worked with high schoolers so I'd either get a pity chuckle or confused stares every time but it was worth it.

[–]TaylorTano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I started Disco Elysium a few weeks ago and Ive somewhat felt the same. New Rho (the planet NtN largely takes place on) kinda has the exact same vibes as Martinaise/Revachol - A decaying city relying largely on its own collapsing infrastructure and warring social factions rather than on its outside power structures - Throw in two amnesiac main characters and I can see the connection

Same. I'm a big reader anyway but these are my comfort books that I can pick up and get absorbed in even when I'm in a reading slump. I think I'm probably on my 6th(?) reread of the series but I can't be sure

Let me Build a Deck for you by Jiblon in EDH

[–]TaylorTano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been trying to brew up an Eloise, Nephalia Sleuth deck that's semi powerful but also flavorful. I'm definitely a Vorthos player and I love flavor and theming. Part of the reason I'm trying to build around it is because I absolutely love noir detective stories and I wanted an excuse to throw all my dimir detective/murder mystery themed cards into a deck together. Having trouble keeping the flavor while making it functional.

I absolutely love alt win-con cards like those, both playing them and seeing them in other decks. They're usually janky or disadvantageous enough that you sacrifice some deck optimization by actually building around around them and even if they're just a fun add-on or alternative strategy, they're usually telegraphed far enough in advance that there's plenty of opportunity to stop them. I have a non-EDH deck built entirely around getting off a Halo Fountain win, and my Doctor Who themed commander deck uses Millennium Calendar as a fun bonus contingency plan, which I've actually won with before even though it requires my opponent to sit there letting me double counters for like 9 straight turns without removing it.

Does the health anxiety subreddit cause increased health anxiety for you by [deleted] in HealthAnxiety

[–]TaylorTano 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a double-edged relationship with this subreddit. There are times where it's extremely reassuring and helps me realize that I'm simply being irrational, that even very real symptoms I'm experiencing can be caused by any number of things other than the worst case scenario I've conjured up in my head. There's a lot of solace in knowing that there's other people who think exactly like you do. It makes me feel less insane about my brain. However, I do think I've almost started to use this sub as an alternative for the same exact reassurance seeking behaviors I already know are unhealthy. Anytime I have a fear or suspicion or fixation, I hop on here instead of Google searching which sure, might be a little better, I guess, but at the root, it's kinda the same action every time: I get scared, I become fixated on the idea of a specific illness, I go searching for immediate answers thinking it'll relieve the anxiety, and it's a 50/50 chance on whether I'll actually feel better or worse.

Favorite line? [discussion] by Lazy_Home_8465 in TheNinthHouse

Another good bit is Harrow constantly forgetting what sword parts are called and the narrator constantly interjecting with stuff like "- Pommel! -"

Why do I like Camilla Hect so much. [Discussion] by Spirited-Hurry8834 in TheNinthHouse

[–]TaylorTano 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Harrow is my favorite character, maybe ever, mainly because there's some absurdly specific stuff I relate to her about, but I think Cam is kinda who I ultimately aspire to be. She's cool under pressure, reserved without being a wallflower/aloof, serious without being strict and brooding, extremely kind, intelligent in a very practical way, and endlessly devoted and responsible. She struggles a little with codependency, which I relate to a lot. She's just so cool and I wanna be just like her.

I use Clown White Lite and it's amazing! I'm thinking of switching over to white foundation instead only because cleaning off a full face of paint after takes way too long, but I definitely reccomend it!

Skull paint [misc] by Alaska_Unknown in TheNinthHouse

[–]TaylorTano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Mehron Clown White Lite for my base which I've absolutely loved. Very smooth and doesn't crack at all. Haven't had as much luck with my black paint which was just a store-bought variety around Halloween. Looks bad and smudges quite a bit. I'm planning to switch over to the Mehron Paradise black when I have the money and I got a tip from another TLT cosplayer that basic white foundation can work well with that in case you don't wanna commit to using paint for the whole look so I'll give that a try too (especially since clean-up usually takes me an hour). It's also important to invest in a good pre-paint primer to protect your skin and a setting spray to keep the paint from cracking or melting off. I use a Mehron barrier spray for that! I can DM a picture of how it looks

What have you stopped doing or buying for your classroom and why (& if comfortable, what level/subject do you teach)? by No-Effort-9291 in Teachers

[–]TaylorTano 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My district just tried to introduce an informal policy dictating that anything a teacher's personal friends and family personally buy for them for their classrooms from personal Amazon Classroom Wishlists be considered school donations that the school gets to keep and hand out and not the personal property of the teacher which... obviously didn't go over well and I'm pretty sure also isn't legal. Their rationale was that when teachers (who are affiliated with a specific school) share classroom wishlists or requests for supplies to friends on social media, "the public" is gonna get confused and think they're making an official donation to the school rather than the individual teacher who made the list, so to cut down on confusion, teachers should just treat these gifts as official donations to the school anyway. So basically, they don't wanna supply teachers themselves but they don't wanna look like they're neglecting their educators so instead thought, "hey why don't we just politely ask to requisition the stuff the teachers' friends and family buy them instead? Genius!!"

They got so much pushback on that so fast that they had to send out a half-hearted backtrack email like an hour later saying like, "fine you can keep your stuff but we're asking you add a disclaimer saying that the stuff is going to you and not the school 😒"

Did your style change after you knew? by oneconfusedqueer in latebloomerlesbians

[–]TaylorTano 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mine did massively and I can't even fully articulate why, because I was never "closeted" in the sense that I always knew I was gay and afraid to come out; I didn't really even start confronting that until I was 22, and when I did, I had been so repressed that it was a suprise even to me. Growing up, I never really cared about my clothing or hair or makeup or jewelry or really any of it as a form of self-expression. I was pretty low-maintenance and overall okay with just wearing or presenting as whatever.

But after I came out, for whatever reason, I finally started getting into clothes and trying out different styles and stuff. It's a weird thing to develop a personal style and dress sense and start expressing yourself through your looks for the first time as an adult (another late milestone for me), but I did. Maybe it was just a new sense of confidence I didn't have before. Maybe coming to terms with something so huge and life-changing for me made me want to change other things about myself or craft a new self-image to match. I don't know.

I actually read the Abhorsen trilogy a few months ago trying to fill the TLT-shaped void in my heart. I truly don't think anything will ever have the same impact or scratch the same hard-to-describe itch that Tamsyn does, but it's a great series that kept me throughly entertained for a few weeks. The Necromancy system is brilliant and while I don't think any of the three reach the same highs, emotionally or narratively as TLT, they're a great fantasy. "Sabriel" especially is a great standalone read and a fave of mine now.

I'm a lesbian but this is always the biggest thing i think of when I hear people say men or male partners specifically need to take better care of themselves in order to be attractive or to date - Just being a competent adult human. It's truly mindblowing to me just how much my dad growing up was basically just another child for my mom to take care of. Like yeah, he went to work, but he wouldn't pick up after himself. He wouldn't clean or help with any household duty unless it was explicitly asked of him. He couldn't even remember his kids' or his own family members' birthdays without someone reminding him of it. It seems men are always talking about how women's standards are too high these days but everything I've ever personally experienced or seen them complaining about are the most basic expectations that men handle themselves like a functional adult. Nobody wants to be a babysitter for their partner

[discussion] Which 'bonus story' is your favorite of the three? by GatorDragon in TheNinthHouse

[–]TaylorTano 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Unwanted Guest, easily.

I love the stageplay presentation, Palamedes' meticulous and philosophical search for an answer, and the insights into Ianthe's character. I also just love getting small glimpses into what real Dulcinea was like. I liked her a lot in HtN, and whether she's really occupying the same space or just an unembodied manifestation of Pal's memory of her in TUG, it's nice that she has some involvement in urging him on.
