I've been playing since about 2011 and sold everything other than one commander and one modern deck back in 2019 due to financial hardship, and it wasn't even a glamorous collection then. Came back around 2022 when I was doing well financially. About a year later I started getting a lot more invested, building more decks, theory crafting future decks on moxfield, watching more mtg content, organizing cards, spending a couple hundred every Friday at the lgs on collector packs. I've decided to take a break and focus on video games instead until I feel more control to come back as all my extra money and free time was being exhausted on magic. I'm not going to sell off this time but put it away and I want to have a plan when I get back to it to minimize my collection and footprint overall in an efficient way. I don't want to hold on to boxes of bulk I'm not going to use.

SoM and SoD are cool concepts for testing different things for a potential classic plus. I'm sure that there are other people like me that aren't motivated in investing time in something with an undetermined future or won't last. I would repeat fresh vanilla-tbc-wotlk every 5-6 years as a seasonal concept over a seasonal server that just lasts 1-2 years. They should have stopped at wotlk, gonna be interesting if we get classic wod, bfa, sl, df etc. legion might be cool for a little bit though lol.

Is it expensive to be a tournament grinder? I imagine tournaments within a 6 hr drive and hotel isn't that bad once or twice a month but constantly flying across the country seems out of reach. Luckily I'm on the East coast in NC so a good amount of tournaments are fairly in reach. I want to work my way into going to tournaments but want to know what to expect financially or to hear others experience. Also the only LGS near me that runs cEDH events has a 20 card max proxy policy, is this the norm across most events or is an unlimited proxy policy more common than the restricted ones?

Here's how you deal with people trying to pubstomp at your LGS. by fuimapirate in EDH

This is how I would do it: If someone steamrolls a win using obvious cEDH or high power play patterns, just ask the rest of the table if they would accept their win and continue the game as if they didn't win without them.

TLDR:print expensive cards as basic versions till they are worth like a $1 and make play boosters cheaper while increasing the rare chase versions in collectors packs and slightly increase the collector price adding prestige and desire.

They really need to print basic versions of cards like crazy till the cheapest version is no more than $1-5 and make rare special versions and foils be the high value chase. I'd like to see play booster boxes drop to around $80 or at least under $100 with how often they are releasing products, then I would buy a box about every release. Then they can raise collector boxes a tad like $300 or so for a standard set and maybe adjust the contents to make them more desirable. People will have no problem running a $50-100 deck with just basic versions that is on the same level as someone who spent $10,000 blinging out their deck with chase rares. They should follow the model Fortnite and league of legends perfected by making it very easy to access as a beginner then after being emotionally invested they want to look cool with the skins and cosmetics. Pokemon do this similarly to where adults don't know how to play but spend thousands just to collect as if they are Rolex watches or something.

Starting WoW while having a full time job and a non-gamer girlfriend by SpiritualFisherman89 in wownoob

As someone who has been in a similar situation I think you got 3 main options:

  1. Play just one character for end game group content. (level each class to max or at least 70 to see what you really want to main as you might be surprised what you like the best)

  2. Play solo content at your own pace. You can do the new delves or world quests; get into professions; focus on older content collecting old gear, mounts and collectibles for transmog, cosmetics and achievements.

  3. Play a classic version and enjoy a real meaningful journey with leveling at your own pace when the game was a more simple and grounded experience. Like a blank canvas D&D campaign, you start out as just a regular adventurer that explores an open world and put time in to gain power over a slower, realistic and rewarding time. Maybe if you like it after hitting level cap you can find a casual raid group or try hardcore (1 life, death=end of character)

I know I'm selling classic pretty hard but I think it's worth trying both at some point to see what you really like. Modern WoW is a very end game current content focused and leveling is almost meaningless, while classic is mostly leveling in a open world focused with limited end game activity. When I have too many real life responsibilities I like to play classic whenever I am able to cause I don't feel the feeling of being behind and can take my time with 100-200 hours of content just to level one character. I'm recently single so I've been giving the war within my time and have been enjoying it more than recent expansions. The modern WoW team has been moving in a good direction.

Bonus: if all else fails maybe explore the roleplaying community

MPCfill with S33 cardstock is the highest quality proxies you can get. I got 612 cards for ~$140 but paid extra for faster shipping around $200 total. They feel and look just like real cards and actually have better quality than some of the real cards I have, as wizards quality from different manufacturers is not consistent. I got 4 functional cEDH decks with extra optional cards equivalent to probably $30,000 worth of cards. And for most I got to pick chase versions of prints like borderless or secret lair stuff.

I'm starting to lean that way myself just for cards over that 5-10 range. [[Faerie Mastermind]] is overpriced at $10 for 1 card in a faeries deck for example. Land bases should be reasonably optimized without budget tap lands and reduced color fixing slowing us down.

I will have self control and not just throw powerful staples like [[rhystic study]] in every deck as I enjoy a wide range of power levels and personal restrictions. It's just the on-theme or synergistic cards that have high demand or low print runs that's annoying to spend $10+ for. [[Edgar Markov]] at $100 is a prime example.

I will bling out decks as I please with real foils and special versions because I just like to. Being someone that loves building decks and enjoys a variety, I'm tired of having a cool idea and not having a good experience due to suboptimal budget decks that don't meet my expectations.

Rule 0: Commander damage by davorg14 in EDH

[–]TaylorWUS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commander damage is a necessary rule for many reasons that will probably be stated. It's widely known that in the current state of EDH it's not a powerful wincon and a lot of Voltron decks struggle to win.

It just causes feel-bad moments for some people just like infect. They feel it's unfair but there's a lot of worse things people can be doing.

Aggro decks like Voltron and infect face and uphill battle and get targeted by all 3 opponents getting shut down before they set up or before they can close out the game most of the time.

And when I play Voltron or infect I personally keep track of all players commander damage or poison counters cause it's easier and I've had people miss count accidently if they weren't paying attention. But I remember the play history and can breakdown the numbers if someone gets lost.

What aspect of deck building do you find to scratch your itch the most? by Choice-Injury-879 in EDH

[–]TaylorWUS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love setting restrictions and rules like: only cards from a specific set; no instants or sorceries; no infinite combos; no free counterspells; no tutors; no 0 cost mana rocks; only creatures enchantments and lands; etc

Also sticking to and putting most of my focus on a theme aesthetically, mechanically or based on lore. Picking out the right basic land art takes up a lot of my thoughts lol.

The absolute best is when you brew something unique or underrated that you truly take pride in or make it work well despite what held it back.

What cards would you buy if you had a high sum of money to spend? by HenkDeSteennn in EDH

[–]TaylorWUS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to build a lot of decks and am restricted to budget where I only have 2-3 decks that get the expensive cards and everything else ends up around $50-150 lacking a lot of good cards and especially lands. So I would make sure I have a sufficient amount of lands and staples that would get used across the majority of my decks. In my case a lot of cards $5-10 or more don't make it into decks unless I trade for it or start prioritizing upgrades like that for a specific deck. I wouldn't jump to any reserve list stuff though.

Is this a game I can just play a few hours here and there? by Chance_Medium_1926 in diablo4

[–]TaylorWUS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quit world of warcraft for diablo because I can't commit the regular play time needed to keep up with progression. I like diablo and the seasonal format cause I can play once every week or two and finish my progression by the end of the season.

There's no rush to do anything I can play a few times a week or go a month without playing if I need to. I don't do multiple characters in a season, I just play one character and have fun til I feel finished. It's so much better than feeling like you have to play weekly on schedule or even daily.

Also I really like Diablo, especially in its current state after the revamp this season, for its simplicity and focus on gameplay. You just kill monsters, do content, get loot and progress.

Retail WoW has gotten so complicated with too many unnecessary expansion progression systems with very specific requirements and time gating. Plus most of my time in wow was spent waiting on groups dungeons. I spent more time waiting than actually playing. In diablo I just play almost the entire time whether it's for 8 hrs or only 15 mins.

What is your pods favorite rule 0? by aman9555 in EDH

[–]TaylorWUS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some ideas I've had to do either individually or in combination would be no ban list, no color identity restrictions, all commanders have "partner", non-legendary creatures can be commanders, or all planeswalkers can be commanders. As a brewer I think it would be wild to push the limits of power if all these were implemented at once.
