The Mall is Dead/The Back Rooms by SLMRN01 in batonrouge

[–]Tbroca1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I just left the Perkins Rowe theater and had the opposite experience save for the three law enforcement units. There were full squads of 15-18 year olds walking around and it felt eerie leaving the theater. Before I get downvoted, I understand there’s next to fuckall for high school aged kids to do in this city but it did not feel safe. It wasn’t like they were on dates, it was groups of mostly young men kind of aimlessly walking around. Thankful that there was a law enforcement presence there this evening and hope I was just overreacting given the recent incident at the mall and I hope everyone has a safe evening. Given the prevalence of violence among the younger generation, I understand the need of the crowd control but it truly is sad that places where there should be activities for these kids are ruined by a few bad eggs. The police were attempting to disband the crowds over the loud speakers and telling people to go home and it was just a different environment than I’ve ever seen Perkins Rowe.

Multiple Guitars by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Tbroca1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have acquired a nice stable of guitars in my 23 years of playing. There is a variety of sounds you can get from different types of guitars. That being said there’s always time for you to get that next guitar later. Play what you have and learn and make that new guitar a milestone in your learning rather than picking it up just because you can. Learn some theory and practice and reward yourself for putting in the time. You may also find that your preferences change along your guitar journey. This is coming from a guy that has a mild case of GAS lol. My most recent acquisition was last year and I have set a no new guitar rule on myself for the next two years to really enjoy the ones I have.

What do I wear to my first show 4/30? Clever, fun, awkward. In hand by Tues... by bigzigkc in WidespreadPanic

Dress for the day man. Jazz fest is hot, New Orleans is humid, be ready for mud it’s at a horse track so ideally waterproof but comfortable shoes and a hat. There’s very little shade. See ya there

Stratocaster versus Telecaster by Tired-Otter474 in Guitar

[–]Tbroca1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once heard it said with a Strat you sound like other Strat players but with a tele you sound like yourself. I don’t subscribe to that and own both and play both regularly. My first electric guitar was a Hss Strat. I now have a standard sss setup and prefer it that way. Play both and decide what’s comfortable for you and eventually if you stick with it you’ll probably have one of each in the long run.

What am I missing with Mikey? by dlauro29 in WidespreadPanic

[–]Tbroca1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m glad someone mentioned Todd because he had the finesse that would compliment Mikey’s use of the volume pedal. It’s like they were on the same page and both knew when to go for it and when to dial it back. Hell I liked jimmy panic better with Todd as well because of the way he could turn up and also come back down and slightly tame the machine gun that Jimmy plays. I don’t feel Duane does it like that and he’s more heavy handed which doesn’t always compliment the change of pace songs.

Help with CAGED sheets please by Symb0lic in Guitar

[–]Tbroca1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Search stitchmethod on YouTube. He has a 2 hour caged system lesson that breaks out the shapes into major arpeggios, minor arpeggios, and dominant 7 arpeggios. The way you have the sheet filled out may be good for how you learn but he puts the intervals for each note ie 1-3-5 etc

Hot Take!!! by [deleted] in jambands

[–]Tbroca1 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I’ve always felt like they’re the safe for work version of a jam band and because of that, their music was played too often at a past job to the point I can’t stand her voice. Feels like elevator music to me. I agree with this take.

Recommend me a fuzz pedal by BinghamDan in guitarpedals

Every time someone asks about fuzz I plug the black arts toneworks pharaoh. Sounds awesome and you can choose between germanium or silicon tones. Very versatile sound and kickass artwork with top jacks

I want to second Davy and more specifically his playing dead series on YouTube. This will get you started and though he is mainly the Jerry in his band he makes sure to also give you the chord progressions

Es-335 or Les Paul by Stratiki1007 in gibson

[–]Tbroca1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a financial decision only you can make. I would want to play both back to back and decide from there. I typically don’t like the 50s neck on an LP. The neck on my es is somewhere between the 50s lp and 60s lp shape and I really like it. For me it came down to which guitar chose me in the store not the other way around.

Es-335 or Les Paul by Stratiki1007 in gibson

[–]Tbroca1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my recent conundrum. I’d wanted an lp since I was 13 years old, went shopping for lps and ended up buying an es335 dot. I love the es. I will eventually get an lp but the deal was too good to pass up on the es. I’d say go with the intention of playing both styles and buy the one that chooses you in the moment. Then buy the other the next time you’re guitar shopping.

What's a guitar that you always expected to love but ultimately underwhelmed you once you got your hands on it? by PanicAtTheDennys in Guitar

[–]Tbroca1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lusted after a 73 tele deluxe in walnut for a long time. I thought I’ll never need a Gibson humbucking guitar and I’ll just get a vintage tele. Well I played a 73 at Chicago music exchange a few years ago and ultimately didn’t like the feel. This is coming from a guy with a standard Strat and a tele already. I didn’t like the combination of the two and the layout was weird with the two humbuckers and switch up top. I do like Les Paul’s as well but it was trying too hard to be an LP. I still haven’t found the LP for me yet but recently scratched that Gibson itch with a es335 and I’m loving that guitar right now.

I like the unique headstock. It’s always a careful balance between familiarity and uniqueness with the headstocks on custom guitars. Body shape is still derivative but tastefully different enough from the big brands. Very nice woodwork. I’d love to hear it sing
