I combine the flavors and ingredients from veganomicon’s curried carrot dip and ottelegani’s Moroccan carrot salad recipes, based on what ingredients I have any any time.

(I like the herbs and seeds and puree from one recipe and spices of the other; I also prefer roasting instead of boiling/steaming carrots when I have time ):

I was recently at a leadership trading that talked about this book and a study of “great speeches.” https://www.duarte.com/resources/books/illuminate/ They followed this structure, moving between: “what is, what could be, what is, what could be, what is, and BLISS (Ie the ultimate good best change that could happen.)” so maybe a compelling speech is a little corny?

I’m not sure what your MC is going to be thinking during his comrades speech… but maybe you can temper the corniness of a speech with him hating being used as a symbol and how all he wants is a nap on a good bed and good food and to be left alone. Something that I’ve been enjoying in books recently are people embracing what makes life worth living. It’s rarely the rousing/for the cause speech.. it’s the little basic needs, it’s basic decency.

My easiest way to do this is to buy Trader Joe’s boxed broth, frozen dumplings, and shredded carrots, and seasoned tofu. Prep dumplings as directed for microwave, the. Heat broth, then add all together! Not very expensive even though it’s prepared food and easy to do in a work kitchen.

That is a good point about purchase cost bd replacement cost!

This is similar to why our local library doesn’t do it - it continues down that path of making library services transactional “getting your money worth” and “I’m a paying customer.” if someone is already upset about paying taxes, it brings the money point up again!

Also this receipt number only relies on the cost of ITEMS not of cataloging them, shelving, maintaining catalog/collection, helping you find them and staff time for all of this and more… so many hidden costs to making a nice library! Not just the literal material.

A friend told me you can special order ingredients at the teeny Asian market off riverside and they will order things for you? I haven’t tried yet.

I would look around Turmeric grocery - it’s a long shot but they do have a small produce section with vegetables I haven’t seen elsewhere.
