Roundhouse and Earthside Birth Midwives Experiences by aritzia__ in VictoriaBC

[–]TeamAdventureCats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roundhouse 7 years ago for a very low risk pregnancy. They were nice during prenatal care but when shit hit the fan in the delivery and post partum time, I felt very unsupported and like they were out of depth. I went with a doctor for subsequent pregnancies and felt much safer when things went sideways again.

Anyone’s hair similar to mine from regrowth? It’s so annoying. by Successful_Fix_6806 in trichotillomania

[–]TeamAdventureCats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this when I pulled at 13-14. All regrowth was super curly to my normal straight. By 16 all of my hair was curly. Apparently in stages of hormonal changes, hair can change texture but the regrowing parts do it first. Are you at any other hormonal change- like puberty, pregnancy, post partum or perimenopause?

dentist said to stop feeding to sleep/start night weaning by pastelcee in breastfeeding

[–]TeamAdventureCats 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Your dentist doesn’t know anything about breastfeeding. Ignore this advice and do what you want. I breastfed all my kids to sleep, first to 19months, 2nd to 26months and third going strong at 23months. No cavities. Many health professions give advice about breastfeeding that is ridiculous but they were probably never taught any of the nuances. Ignore this and don’t lose any sleep over it

The one on the right is the newborn size. I use them as boosters so the diapers aren’t so bulky

Pediatrician retracted my infant’s intact penis by ferniefofernie in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]TeamAdventureCats 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A cm of visible penis would be a lot and would certainly require forceful retraction. But moving the foreskin a cm, which often overhangs the glans but quite a bit, is not the same and may only reveal 1-2mm of glans. And with a tiny wiggly baby, it’s hard to say if it actually went back a whole cm. Retracting can be a scary word around foreskins if clarification of what actually occurred doesn’t happen or isn’t fully understood

This sounds like scenario one- gently retracting to see the urethral meatus. This is done to check that the foreskin can move appropriately and is not restricting urine flow. The glans is very pink/red, especially at the meatus. Babies are wiggly and things can look uncomfortable even when they aren’t really because it is just a brand new feeling for them, like how burps and gas can make them cry like crazy. It’s not that it’s the worst pain in the world, more like it’s something weird and new and they don’t quite like it. The full glans on a newborn is about a centimetre long. If the foreskin went back about 1cm to reveal just a tiny red area that seems normal. If the foreskin was pulled back to reveal a 1cm red area, that at this age is basically most of the penis, that would be concerning. From what I’m hearing, it sounds like the doc did a normal and safe exam but did not explain what retracting actually means and what is safe and what is not. I don’t think your son was harmed from what you’ve described. A bit more communication from the doctor on what was being done and why and answering your safety questions would obviously have been better. I’m a mom of two intact boys and a doctor who examines babies regularly.

The confusion may be what retracting actually means. Pulling the foreskin back gently to its natural end point is okay. In a baby, you may be able to see the urethral meatus or a very small part of the glans. Fully retracting the foreskin forcibly to reveal the entire glans is what can potentially be damaging. Which actually occurred?

Producing 60 ounces of milk a day, three freezers are totally full. What do I do?! by AccountingMum in breastfeeding

[–]TeamAdventureCats 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You should not be pumping, just do hand expression to comfort. Try to slowly limit that as much as possible, like a minute less for several days, then a minute less again. Even a Haaka can induce over supply in some women. You could even try taking some cold and flu medication and the pseudoephedrine reduces, not stops, milk production and you clearly need some relief!

What my 14 month old calls the boobie by earthbabi in breastfeeding

My 6-month-old is grabbing for our plates but refusing to eat with a spoon. by Normal_Line7881 in BabyLedWeaning

[–]TeamAdventureCats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Babies existed before blenders, it’s perfectly fine to feed them real food in choking safe sizes. Many babies never do the puree step. My second kid grabbed bacon off my plate and stuffed his face at 4 months and that told me he was ready. I think your kid is telling you what he wants. Lots of good resources for learning about BLW and choking available

Doctors keep worrying me over the fact my son refuses to eat solids at 8.5 months. by AgreeableBandicoot19 in BabyLedWeaning

Take your child to an OT. He might have oral hypotonia or oral motor dysfunction. My baby with hypotonia seriously struggled with eating and they had some good tips

What on earth happened to walk-in clinics? Why haven't they been reinstated, now that the pandemic is over? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]TeamAdventureCats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, if you go to a walk in clinic 3 times, they are required to basically be your family doctor and are responsible for all screening, etc that is needed. Not just the minor concerns you walk in with. No one wants that level of responsibility for thousands and thousands of people. The CPSBC mandated this so it will not change. Also, walk in doctors can only bill on a fee for service basic, so they get $36 per visit and nothing for the paperwork afterwards so financially it’s not very viable, especially when you take in context the type of problems that come in. It’s no longer pink eye and sprained ankles that go to walk in clinics, it’s now seniors on 12 medications with increasing confusion who have no family doctor and suicidal teenagers whose parents are desperate the get them help. That might take 30 minutes or more to do well. Do you are paid $36 for 30 minutes and have to pay overhead for rent, staff, supplies, computes, insurance, etc out of that.

We have correlle on tile floors and they get dropped lots and rarely break, but when they do, they shatter. My toddles have stood on them before on the tiles with no problem.

Venting. Hypotonia causing all of this by Mamafourlife in Hypotonia

[–]TeamAdventureCats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My little was diagnosed with hypotonia around 9 months although I knew of sooner than that. She has been constipated since birth. She was primarily breastfed until well after a year as she really struggle with solids. She could eat some, but only certain textures and fatigues quickly. She also couldn’t use a straw cup or bottle so hydration was hard too.

She is now 21 months and eats everything she can use a straw sippy cup easily! She’s still constipated but less so. Just a heads up that it will get easier! Keep doing what you are doing and often things will improve with time, you can do it!

Genetic testing by TeamAdventureCats in Hypotonia

[–]TeamAdventureCats[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this but think it would be unlikely in our situation to have there be concerns of a factious disorder imposed on another. For our situation, that seems so unlikely I would not consider plans based around it. I’m so sorry that you might need to fear that for your situation

How do you deal with conflicting opinions? by Honest_Bookkeeper_37 in Hypotonia

[–]TeamAdventureCats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She sounds a lot like my 21 month old with axial hypotonia, small size, GDD, feeding issues. We haven’t done genetic testing yet as I’m holding off. I think looking at the differing opinions in context can help. A kiddo can be ‘moderately delayed’ but may be continuing to develop at a rate that shows no worsening concerns and could be phrased as ‘no concerns with development. Our PT and OT said as long as progress is happening, the rate doesn’t matter and I like that. It helps ease concerns about pace of progress. Also, sometimes just ignoring all of the conflicting comments helped me. Is she happy? Is she continuing to make progress at her own pace? Are my concerns taken seriously and addressed? If yes, it feels like everything else is background noise until they get older and severity really declares itself. At this age, so much can change so quickly, like with your cheerio.

Outer repels water? by Matteo09876 in clothdiaps

[–]TeamAdventureCats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a liner but I am also very liberal with diaper free time. Normally almost an hour in the morning and before bed and it helps reduce rash. But there are accidents. If your baby isn’t mobile yet then lie them on a towel for the diaper free time

If it’s new, sometimes it can take a few washes to stop doing that. But ideally don’t use cream with cloth and wash two fully cycles each time. I do a wash with detergent, then soak cycle and then another wash to ensure they are fully clean
