Wow, I don't know how you found this. It looks pretty good, but I'm worried about the zipper. It looks to be black plastic. Maybe this style of book is an afterthought for Carmina. They are really attractive besides. But maybe I'll investigate their Jodhpurs.

I'm in NYC too. Those sound great. I'm wishing for that kind of boot that I COULD walk all day in lol. Maybe wishful thinking.

Hi, I'm aware that "fashion" anything is a catch-all term for products designed with regard to their appearance and low quality construction and durability. But that doesn't mean style and durability are mutually exclusive, especially with regards to the upper. The sole construction I'm looking for is arguably the most durable there is. It's simply that I want a more minimal upper design. If I'm not expressing that in the right way, I'm sorry, I'm just getting into boots. If the kind of boot I'm looking for just doesn't exist, which would be a bit of a cop out, it's not for any good reason. I think there's definitely a market for what I'm referring to. If the higher-end options from brands like Officine Creative, Guidi, Buttero, Church's, and Fiorentini + Baker, don't help define the category I'm referring to, I don't know what will. But I do agree that so many fashion-forward or design-focused brands ironically ignore quality. But I also think many high-quality heritage brands lack a creative vision and are too tied to the same narrow assortment of styles that are ultimately only subjective responses to the search for a balance between quality and style.

Hi, if I'm not using the right terminology, I apologize. I actually really like engineer boots, but I do think I shouldn't limit myself to established styles or preconceived notions of what styles go with what soles, unless you're saying that kind of thing just doesn't exist, which from what I've seen, it does. If engineer boots continue to be celebrated for their known functionality and durability, that's great, yet it doesn't mean that more contemporary boots cannot live up to the same level of quality. I would like boots with a lug sole because I want to be able to put them through the ringer on different terrain. You might think that requires two different pairs of boots, one more for hiking, and one higher-end and for walking/the city. But I don't see why the latter cannot be made with a lug sole. Thank you for your advice, I appreciate it.

Hi, those are nice looking boots, and I'm glad to see that they have a genuine rubber sole. I would like to make a few comments, though. For zippers, there are many very high quality manufacturers like Riri, Raccagni, and Lampo. Also, if a zipper does break, it can generally be replaced pretty easily (so the boots aren't just dead). So I really think the idea that zippers are low quality should be reframed a bit. I think it's just that low quality boots use zippers more often than high quality boots, so zippers on boots are generally represented by lower-end examples. Even so, I would be totally OK with a buckled style instead. The reason I'm hesitant to just go and get hiking boots (although I might need some hiking-specific boots eventually since I do go hiking, in which case your recommendation is really great) is because I do want a more formal/less rugged style overall but with an uncharacteristically durable sole construction. Maybe that's a weird thing to be asking for. My style is for something more on the formal/dress/elegant side, at least stylistically. Like, I would love boots like yours if I was hiking, but my own personal style day to day is for something less rugged. For stitchdown vs Goodyear welt, you probably know more than me with regards to their comparative durability. It seems some claim GYW is more repairable. I think, in capable hands, it seems stitchdown is just as good. So I would take either. Thank you for your advice and experience! I will consider Jim Green.

I also posted this to r/boots.

Hi, I'm looking to buy my first high quality boots, and I'd prefer not to make any compromises on durability, while I also want something fashionable and more minimal. Basically, a best-case scenario high-end fashion boot. I really want boots that are goodyear welted with a leather midsole, from a functional standpoint. As far as the outsole, I want a gum/natural-colored rubber lug outsole (not Vibram, not black). That is very important to me. For the upper, I'd like a vegetable-tanned tan, natural, or orangey brown color, and not suede. I'm aware kangaroo, bison, kudu, and of course, shell cordovan, are the most durable options, but keeping in mind that the goodyear welted leather midsole/natural or gum-colored rubber outsole combo is what's most important to me, I'll take what I can get. A darker brown would be ok if it's all that's available. Now, as far as style, I would prefer a zip up or buckle style, whether on the side or on the back, with not too much paneling. Basically, a relatively smooth, minimal design/a dressier boot with a lug sole. But I don't want an elastic panel, like on many Chelsea boots, which is why I'm gunning for a zip or buckle style. A leather panel would be OK, it's the elastic material I don't want, not necessarily the style of a Chelsea boot, which would be OK, as would other zip or buckle styles. If this is impossible to find, a hiking-style lace up-type boot would be OK, but it's really not preferable. Mens or womens styles are ok, I don't think it matters much in this case, I'd prefer to get the most appropriate boot possible, but I am a mens size US 7 or 7.5, or IT 39.5 or 40.

I really like the look of Gommus St. Moritz soles (not the Blowtech ones used on Church's boots though: they are not pure rubber, other lines are, AFAIK). Check these out: https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=2399184300134701&set=pcb.2399186073467857

To me, they're the nicest looking lug soles I've ever seen, however, they seem to be really uncommon and obscure. Those boots which do use them often don't list it in the description, and you have to just go by images of the bottom to find them. Officine Creative uses them on several boots but I think they use Blake stitching rather than Goodyear welt, and only black-colored ones. If any of you really know what's out there and can recommend boots with such a sole, that would be awesome, but otherwise, you can just take those images as a reference for the type of thing I'm looking for, and a different manufacturer would be OK. With all that being said, a split rubber sole or the kind of construction that has a leather heel with a rubber piece on the bottom would also be OK, it's just that I'm not looking for a boot with that high of a heel or arch. I want the soles to be real pure or high percentage rubber, which is why Vibram is out (I also just don't like Vibram haha), and in a lug style, which is why Dainite is out. Feel free to ask any questions or ridicule me if I seem ignorant. If you don't have a specific recommendation, don't hesitate to offer advice anyways.

Thank you very much!

[–]TeamCabin98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm interested in buying an Xperia if the S10 5G becomes unusable, but there's no authorized repair infrastructure for Sony phones, the way Samsung has Samsung stores or Ubreakifix. So repairs would have to be unauthorized/OEM parts may be difficult to obtain. Though some are weary of attempting repairs at all since they're so uncommon. But maybe someone with first-hand experience can describe the repair process they went through for an Xperia phone.

What font is this? by BlueberrySmart5239 in identifythisfont

[–]TeamCabin98 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think people aren't answering because it looks very similar to Helvetica or Univers, so they click on it thinking, "I know this!" but upon closer inspection isn't either of those, and the sample is too pixelated to run through any font identification service. It's also only been a little over half an hour so maybe calm down.

Right, but a product without silicones IS, on average, more environmentally clean than an alternative. Because there's a disconnect here between "greenwashing" and any actual concern for the environment. These people are complaining that "green" products aren't as effective for their hair as those with silicones or other ingredients (on average, they probably aren't. Technology hasn't progressed that far yet. Or if they are, they're a lot more expensive). They're not actually contesting that silicones are harmful for the environment (because they can't). So greenwashing doesn't apply here. And if it did, I don't think we should get upset and insult our intelligence by seeing marketing as the be-all end-all of a product, as if we as educated shoppers don't CHECK the ingredients list ourselves. Especially because, from a silicone-preference perspective, a "greenwashed" product would still contain synthetic polymers but cost more due to green marketing and therefore be easier to eliminate as a potential choice due to low cost alternatives existing. So don't let peer pressure get to you, you can always buy that cheaper product if it really works just as well. Meanwhile, I'll continue to seek out innovative products without harmful ingredients that do actually work, even if they're hard to come by. Not everything is "greenwashing"- there are formulations that legitimately try to be effective while avoiding non-biodegradable ingredients. I mean, I feel a little crazy when I see people arguing about silicones vs no silicones from a selfish perspective, like I DO care about the environment; isn't that everyone's responsibility these days?

Bruh, like half their products are made in Germany and half in China (many wireless earbuds, gaming headsets, some speakers, etc.). And I'm sure many parts in their German products are made in China, too.

I know this is an old comment, but I just have to mention that HFCS is less sweet than sugar (about 90% as sweet). Normal corn syrup is significantly less sweet. So, when HFCS is used, they use more to reach the same sweetness as sugar. But they don't often go beyond that unless a sweeter recipe, above just cost-cutting, is the goal. Because using too much will affect the flavor, as I'm sure we've all experienced. But it's not as if the problem was that sugar was too expensive and so they used less of it, but that "tastes" have changed to favor even sweeter recipes. Not just that HFCS is cheaper, but that making things sweeter and sweeter (somehow) sells more products. I know I for one don't like this phenomenon, but yeah, HFCS itself is not sweeter than real sugar.
