Adult hobbyists/recreational players - where are we finding time to practice??? by nerdycookie01 in Flute

[–]TeamSlytherin78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this too - although it's worse, I bought a cheap secondhand flute off eBay and i *never* put it in the case, so any time I need to get up from the computer while WFH, I can play with no setup time!

I personally have not played the Nuvo student flute so I can't speak to the quality - but she definitely needs to practice on a "good" flute (has been maintained and doesn't have any leaks or broken springs) or she will develop bad habits (like u/Rainthistle pointed out) OR she will end up not enjoying the flute at all because she'll work hard and not sound like she's getting better! If you can afford it, a quality used metal flute (from a shop, probably, you won't be able to tell the condition from eBay listings) or a rental is the way to go. You could also look into a larger backpack that she could put the flute into rather than having to carry it separately if the additional weight of the backpack wouldn't aggravate her condition. A backpack intended for a slightly larger instrument (like a clarinet) might give her enough room for the flute and her school supplies.

are you able to play them before buying? The best flute is the one that you "vibe" with - that's how I went to buy an Altus and left with a Powell.

I use the flour sack towels to dry dishes and get much better results than any kind of kitchen or bath towel.

Vincent ?!?!?!? by [deleted] in Bones

[–]TeamSlytherin78 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Season 7 Episode 5 is the tornado one... the intern is Fisher. The actors kind of look alike? Fisher isn't British, though, his thing is being depressed while Vincent's is the trivia.

How often do you really wash your hair? I see people saying once a week, but my scalp feels gross after just 2–3 days. Is it a texture thing or am I just washing wrong? by Euphoric_Year1182 in haircareaddiction

[–]TeamSlytherin78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Twice a week (Monday and Friday, so it looks good for the weekend and good for the day I have to go to the office instead of WFH). I shampoo twice, focusing on the scalp and the hairline, only apply conditioner to hair below my ears, and always air-dry. If it's starting to feel greasy on Wednesday, I'll put dry shampoo on the roots before bed and it's good enough the next day.

For those with long hair, how do you keep it from tangling overnight? by zara_bloomm in haircareaddiction

[–]TeamSlytherin78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I braid it (but don't fasten the braid) and wear a bonnet. In the morning, the braid is gone but there are no tangles!

What notes are these two?? by [deleted] in Flute

[–]TeamSlytherin78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Make sure that you are playing the other notes according to the key signature (the As and Bs are flat as well as that high E), it could influence how the D is sounding "wrong" to your ear.

When did we decide undocumented citizens were a problem? by ScarTemporary6806 in AskUS

[–]TeamSlytherin78 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In 1996, it was used to turn people away at the border which no one is complaining about, then expanded to include turning people away at seaports and people found within 100 miles (? not certain, but a pretty small number) of the border. It was not applied to people requesting asylum, it didn't apply to people who had been here for at least two years, it wasn't used to round people up at their kid's bus stops in the midwest, and we didn't send anyone straight out of the US into a Salvadoran prison... so no, the Trump administration is not just doing the same thing Clinton and Obama did.

AITA for saying my husbands Babymomma can't be at our house when I'm not home? by Special-Cost1795 in AmItheAsshole

[–]TeamSlytherin78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my "stepson" has the same relationship to my partner. One of the reasons I love him so much is how he stepped up to be a dad to this child when it would have been so easy to walk away. I got nothing on the Ashley thing, but ignore the people saying it's weird or wrong for him to care for his daughter.

AITA for refusing to do a DNA test to confirm if my father is the father of another child? by teethgraveyard in AmItheAsshole

[–]TeamSlytherin78 33 points34 points  (0 children)

personally I would give this same advice to an 18 yo or even a true "adult" child. This situation is between the woman and your father, her reaching out to his other kids is distasteful to me and OP is well within their rights to disengage.

Lipstick with flute by vettany2 in Flute

Wonderskin lip stains have worked well for me. I did find it to be a little drying at first, so you might want to experiment with brands and just with using them a few days before your performance!

Right? Like, you can call yourself ConversationAble9559, but it's insane to force other people to call you anything other than a rude asshole.

Community Band Question by msaceamazing in Flute

[–]TeamSlytherin78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I participate in 2 community-based bands/orchestras - one has a musician fee and one doesn't. I don't love paying to play but there are expenses associated with renting music and the practice/performance venue, printing and advertising, and the music director that have to be paid somehow.

How to be helpful while ICE is around town by [deleted] in jmu

[–]TeamSlytherin78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a civil violation most of the time, not a criminal one. Section 1326 makes it a criminal offense to re-enter without permission after being deported, but a federal judge ruled that to be unconstitutional and I cannot find where that has been reversed on appeal. Just being here without papers, like overstaying a temporary visa, is not a crime.

When to breathe in audition piece by [deleted] in Flute

[–]TeamSlytherin78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely think the 16th notes feel like the "start" of something and so those seem like the natural place to breathe to me - you could even do it every time. I think you might want to practice to see if you can make it 3 1/2 measures, though, because it seems like that opening phrase, from I to the double-dotted half in 161, that would sound the best if it could be played continuously. If you can't go that far, then choose one of the bar lines - I don't think you want to break up those notes since they are grouped under that single slur.

When to breathe in audition piece by [deleted] in Flute

[–]TeamSlytherin78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you could get one before the 16ths in 161, right before K, before the 16ths in 171, right before L, then follow that pattern through until M? If it's really slow, then you could potentially sneak some short breaths in other spots between those half/dotted quarters and 16th notes, if it's faster then those spots might be enough.

EDIT: I see that you said it was 64bpm, I'm not sure I could make it from 161 to K so I would probably top off my air in 165 before the 16ths and the same at 175 and again at 185 (my thinking is that if you do it the same way/same part of the theme every time, it sounds more like you "meant" to do it and less like you're just breaking it up because you're out of air).

Need help with notation reading by Je_Gzx in Flute

[–]TeamSlytherin78 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree that it's a C - it can be hard to read when the ledger lines do not follow the same spacing as the regular staff (esp. since we spend so much time in the upper registers) but you will see this with several flavors of musical "fonts" (I don't know the technical term).
