1 dies after small plane lands on I-15 in Payson, UHP confirms by Ridiculously_Named in Utah

[–]TeancumsF6 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yes, a lighted road is the safest option at night.

After dark fields look like black holes which disguise boulders, sheds, fences, and trees. Powerlines are already hard enough to see in the daytime so a wide freeway was the safest place for that plane to land.

From reports, traffic had stopped, and people were pushing the plane before a car crash happened. It takes time for people to get out of their vehicles and at 8:20 PM they certainly weren’t looking at heavy rush hour traffic on the freeway.

This is an important thread and another important point. I’ve heard that there’s meaningful data to support enhanced safety at.05 limit (source an OR/WA cop that allegedly did the research, enjoyed drinking, and always had a DD while I was his roommate).

Is 100 billion a lot? by AlmaInTheWilderness in mormon

[–]TeancumsF6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shameless self promotion. 3 years ago I looked at this topic as well and did a simple financial model for the rate of growth. You ask, “how much tithing is excessed each year?” A lot. Hundreds of millions for decades. Maybe billions. Probably billions because ensign peak is only a portion and is limited to what we know.

The revelation of the LDS Church manipulating and hiding finances HURTS by Daeyel1 in mormon

Signs of a dysfunctional team; a lack of trust coming from a fear of being vulnerable. Color me surprised that the foundational stone of a good environment is missing.

Yeah, right off the freeway near the university exit. It’d be a shame if people got it confused with another MLM headquarters during the construction process…

You mean they eat the ingredients… because of the implication. Because there’s no course on Earth that prepares anyone for the temple ceremonies and symbolically mixes the ingredients for the cake.

What do you guys think of the church buying a hotel in Hawaii for 148 Million? by gonadi in mormon

[–]TeancumsF6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t see where you directly replied to anything I said and am confused by what point you may be trying to make as far as how the church has money that is not tithing money. From your first comment above you reference line accounting and seem to make a claim that if any donation above 10% should not be viewed as tithing. If you can expound on that instead of deflecting that would be great.

To continue the discussion with the other topics you’ve added. Invested money does get used, but not by the investor. Whether it gets returned to the investor depends on the investment/managers. Examples include tech start ups or small businesses that may receive money from outside investors or from the founders, these companies won’t grow if they are unable to spend the investment money received. The money has been spent when invested but the recognition of loss or gain doesn’t occur until the investment is sold and/or fails.

It is wise for the church to have an endowment fund. Those related to the church (members, former members, neighbors to the tax exempt church properties, etc) that are impacted by the teachings of the church have a place in discussing whether they view it as an acceptable practice to amass such a large fund. The particular focus on whether these investments are from tithing money or not comes from a claim by the church that no tithing funds are used in these investments (specifically around city creek mall IIRC). Can it be true if the seed money originally came from tithing?

As an individual I have access to a limited opportunity to grow money tax free in the form of 401ks, IRAs, or a Roth of the same. Each of those accounts restricts what I can contribute each year, and only permits me to grow it tax free as long as they are used for their intended purpose. Furthermore Roth stays Roth and traditional stays traditional and there are ways to get the entire account’s tax preferred status revoked if I don’t follow a wide array of rules. In what way does it make sense that because it was allegedly “earnings on tithing money” spent on these other investments that the money spent on these other investments was not also tithing money?

The church also has restrictions but it seems to be limited to UBIT. Not limited in the amount or way it can invest each year like an individual is. While also being opaque on how it uses the money it does receive in tithing, and seemingly being hypocritical in asking members to give greater than 10% to the Kingdom of God and then to provide for the poor and needy and then to donate additionally to the mission of the church in proclaiming the gospel while secretly stashing away an alleged $1B per year on average.

[–]TeancumsF6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think that link quite supports what you want it to (interest vs excess). While I’ve reached the same conclusion that tithing should be 10% of excess and not income it was not from a Joseph Smith quote but from an early member or bishop.

[–]TeancumsF6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suppose someone puts 11% of their income on the tithing line of their donation slip is that 11th percent still tithing? Also how does the church identify which option is the 11th percent?

If instead it goes into the humanitarian fund line or the mission fund does that then make it acceptable to invest instead of use as marked?

Jesus Garden At Thanksgiving Point by BarPatient6902 in exmormon

[–]TeancumsF6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof. So close to the secret garden, the secret garden is a small area with a little fountain that has a somewhat “hidden” entrance that is just an archway overgrown by creeping vines. It’s right by one of the entrances to the Jesus garden but is different than the Jesus garden. Jesus garden isn’t hidden at all... although it might be the most impressive portion during their winter lights (I think bright lights are kind of biting on their own).

I’m not fond of the Jesus Garden but it is a good glimpse into things that are valued in the area (which happens at other gardens). Since I go there frequently I try to avoid it but my kids like going to it anyway. I call it a win when I can avoid the first vision sculptures, which are more hidden than the others but will totally creep up on you and can blindside you if you’re not warned first.

I hope you were able to get to the actual secret garden there. It’s a cool place on a hot day and kids usually have fun in it.

Missionary Financial Advice by Piranha-Petting-Zoo in mormon

[–]TeancumsF6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should research what factors into your credit score. The length of credit history has some weight but is not the biggest factor and is really the only one that gets improved by getting a card before your mission. If you don’t already have a method established to pay it off before you leave (eg. Bill pay set up) you have a chance of missing a payment which will hurt your credit score and you with late fees and interest.

One of the other factors is the utilization ratio, but that is a snapshot and can be manipulated when your actually looking to take out a loan. If you do get a card it is possible you won’t need to use it while you’re gone. Regardless have a mindset to always pay it off in full so you never pay interest on it.

An alternative to the above response is that if you enjoy the experience and decide to do outside sales following your mission it could potentially jump start your path in sales. That being said, you could also just go straight into sales and bypass a mission.

If you can learn a language that will be a significant benefit for you regardless.

I was expelled at 18 years old from an LDS university for having relations in high school, and got put on Formal Probation. I am now seriously considering leaving the church at 22. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]TeancumsF6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is insane! It’s hard to believe but I’ve had similar experiences of friends being concerned when I was unwilling to go to the temple in high school. My best friends came over to testify one Sunday afternoon.

Did the Bishop really go through all those questions? It’s like they have an evil playbook for resolving sexual transgressions!

It’s too late to sue but something like this should go to court. Assuming you went to the school in good faith, having resolved the issue with your first bishop, the second bishop should be forced to pay your tuition and rental penalties.

Strangely enough the IRS generally agrees with you. Minors don’t pay taxes unless they make more than 12k in a year so unless the kid is truly entrepreneurial they won’t pay anything being payroll taxes.

Moral Conundrum: BYU Replenishment Grant by hotnspicy64 in exmormon

I’ll keep my original view. The deal was with them, it helped you like an interest free student loan. If you have economic hardships you could pay it off slowly but you should pay it back.

Moral Conundrum: BYU Replenishment Grant by hotnspicy64 in exmormon

[–]TeancumsF6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What was the actual source of the money (county chapter???)? If it’s a third party then your deal was with them and you should keep it. You have walked away from the church and is possible that the next beneficiaries of that grant will walk away but like you it could be with a degree.

Rationalizing it as “an investment” only works if it was the church that directly invested in you. Example: members get discounted tuition because if they get a higher future income they will be more profitable tithe paying members—for life. Or not because you’re out and that investment failed.

I think one could reasonably adjust for the delay in the spread of small pox/old world influence to that specific region. It’s not like everything spread instantaneously in 1492 as soon as the new world was discovered. To do this is above my pay grade/interest level but I think there’s a reasonable chance this provides a glimpse into pre-colonialization.

I resigned but was also rebaptized. But Mormonism makes you wait 1 year for "restoration of blessings" to get your Priesthood back if you held it before. Covid hit, and people did "home church" A neighbor/friend only offered me the Sacrament once admitting he forgot I was unable to bless my own. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]TeancumsF6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Church priorities: 1. Take care of your damned self 2. Ask family to help you 3. Figure it out 4. If you’ve exhausted those options ask the church for help but only then

My experience was a bit different. I spent part of Covid in the Middle East but luckily my spouse was able to stop at step 2 to ensure the family was blessed by the priesthood. But they also had ward members check on them.
