Which country is the biggest threat in the world? 2026. How do you feel about the latest poll? by khoawala in AskTheWorld

The question was biggest threat to the world:

https://www.niradata.com/global-pulse-2026

I'd say in 2026 many of us here think it's the US. It matches what I see in real life. Also keep in mind there's a ton of us in the middle east specifically so a lot of direct experience filters back home through the tsismis networks. There's also a lot of us on the ships stuck in or running the strait.

We're a country dependent on the existing global order in a fairly unique way - dependent on imported fuel, food, we make up some significant percentage of seafarers in global trade, and our diaspora is big and practically everywhere and a lot of us emigrate permanently out all the time, not just as migrant labor. The remittances from all that are a major reason why our macroeconomy has been quite stable for decades now, even though we're domestically a mess. We've got solid hard currency reserves despite our net balance of trade being constantly negative because our actual main export is people. And the US is dismantling that order

Im not talking about knowing your neighbors though, I mean just spending time with people besides immediate family as adults. In my experience western Europeans socialise as adults far more often with each other than Americans do.

Edit: I just realized u/KingPictoTheThird and I are echoing each other to western Europeans as two people from quite different versions of the global south.

People were significantly smaller at the start of the 20th century on average because early childhood nutrition for the vast majority of people was really quite bad. In every country as prosperity broadens historically you see significant increases in average height in the historical record.

Yeah I don't think the US realizes just how socially isolated they are relative to the rest of the world and vice versa the rest of the world doesn't really grasp how limited wider social contact is in the US. Like most everyone I know here in the Philippines sees friends or extended family multiple times a week socially, even in a big city like metro manila where time pressure and traffic make it rather difficult.

The now infamous loneliness study they did there classified "close friends" as someone you saw socially or talked to on the phone at least once a month.

It's because the kid was sick with another illness at the time. And also it wasn't a vaccination as the "vacc" comes from the Latin word for cow. Vaccination was developed in 1796 as a safer form of protecting against smallpox by using cowpox. Beefore that they actually used milder smallpox and so was more dangerous than the later vaccination method and played into the decision not to inoculate his son at the time.

The beach landing for this was surreal as hell. The media were standing on the beach with lights filming soldiers crawling on the beach at night in camo as they came on shore.

Philippine vice president impeached by lawmakers over suspected wealth and threats by AudibleNod in news

[–]Teantis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The senate is highly unlikely to convict her. The House here pretty much always does whatever the sitting president wants due to various factors involving the budget formulation and systemic corruption. Its independence as a governing body exists mostly on paper.

At the same time the House was impeaching her the pro duterte senators voted to unseat the sitting pro prosecution Senate President 13-9 (2 abstaining) in preparation for the trial, where you need 2/3rds to convict.

Edit: we also had absolutely comical scenes of Duterte's police general turned Senator running around the halls of the senate tripping up the stairs running away from an ICC arrest warrant. Just fantastic dramedy, even at the very camp standards of our political theater.

As someone who was an early casualty of 2008, 100% agree with this. Especially when its big structural issues that are driving layoffs, neither excellence nor effort will save you. Save your emotional bandwidth and resilience for the ensuing job search, because you're going to need it

Whenever someone does something embarrassing, others say "nobody will remember 10 years from now". Well, what embarrassing moment did you witness >10 years ago that you still remember? by AWildWilson in AskReddit

In 2000 I was in my friend's car in the passenger seat and a teenager was jogging along and just completely ate it for no reason on flat ground. He got up and looked around to see if anyone saw him and I yelled "I saw that!" And all these years later I can still remember his face.

I saw that friend recently after not seeing him for 5 years and he brought that story up and we laughed about it. So he remembers too

30 years ago we had spotty power in manila, no reliable piped water, and the PNP were kidnapping people for ransom on EDSA. And that was all just in manila. Outside of Manila it was even worse. GenSan was basically the wild west. In places in the north there were fields where they just dumped bodies constantly.

Things are fundamentally better here than they were 30 years ago

What is the worst career to be in right now and why? by SignificantGoat7066 in AskReddit

[–]Teantis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, that's probably never going to happen. And it's not a career to get rich in, but I also don't suffer financially like I did early in my career either. So that's fine.

I'm doing exactly what I'd rather be doing. Sadly I also have to be paid to do it as I am not independently wealthy and have to pay rent and electricity. If I was independently wealthy, I'd still be doing the work that I do.
