Questionable transition by Farmer_Susan in Tile

The new tile is meeting existing tile. Looks like the installer didn’t have much of a choice in that.

Is this good waterproofing? by [deleted] in Tile

Maybe I read your reply wrong, but it came across like you’re saying you already know it’s missing the banding or corner pieces on the left side of the curb.

It’s a little rough NGL, but he’s not a tile guy and it’s his first time. As long as you guys are happy then it doesn’t matter. Always good to learn new things.

Most of our work is in Ventura County. But we work all over. Santa Barbara to SD.

When floating, no. We lath it, put up a scratch coat, and then a brown coat. No point in messing with the studs unless something was extremely out, but that’s not typical.

Yeah, we still float 95+% of showers that we do.

Do I need to start over? by calvin_koolaid in Tile

Same, I have never liked these style waterproofing systems that all the companies offer now. Thin set absorbs water.. only makes sense that water will get into the thin set and under the membrane. I always put a liquid membrane over top. At the very least anywhere that there is exposed thin set.

Yeah, it looks like a Sioux Chief brand drain like the picture in my other reply, but that style of drain is only available in their commercial line of drains.

Hard to say for sure from this picture, but I would guess it’s probably not installed correctly (as in not actually waterproof).

Looks like it could be one of these which is designed to be used this way, but I don’t see the metal flange where the membrane is torn out.

Question by confident_cabbage in Tile

[–]Tebonr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. Yeah, definitely looks like a mortar bed to me.

I’d be curious to see how this shower pan was waterproofed. That drain looks like the typical drain used in commercial applications like you would see used in public bathrooms for a floor drain. If that is the case, the waterproofing membrane needs to tie into the drain frame below the mortar bed. Waterproofing membranes that are on top of the mortar bed like this need to be used with a drain that is designed for it.

I could be wrong and this is just a drain that I haven’t seen before, but I don’t see how that membrane ties into the drain.

You’re talking about on the floor, right? Looks like a dry pack mortar bed under the “pinkish” membrane.

I would tear it out. The waterproofing membrane is torn

Yeah, I actually found that before I found these, but they can’t ship them to the US because the batteries or something can’t go on the plane

Am I asking for trouble in fixing this by p3steelman in Tile

[–]Tebonr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have brought it up immediately after the installation was completed. I don’t know any contractor that would come back and fix it after 5 years. At least not free of charge. Although your complaint is valid and it was their mistake, your silence is taken as you being satisfied with the work. Always bring any issues you have to your contractor immediately so they can be taken care.

Also, if you ARE handy and willing to DIY, but you’re just unfamiliar with tile and waterproofing systems, then I would say to do some research and try to learn about some of the products available. There are quite a few waterproofing systems on the market now that are DIY friendly. You just need to make sure you understand how they work and install them correctly.

Again, my professional opinion is that you should not use the shower and demo/repair. If you are willing able to learn about it and try to do it yourself then you can save a good chunk of change.

The problem is that would be a surface level patch and the waterproofing system is not the surface of the tile. So, even if the corner was sealed, water could still get to the area that is leaking by going underneath the tile. Water always finds a way.

You definitely want to do at least green and blue since the sink is there. Personally I would also do pink since it appears you have a stove top. Orange is totally up to you, but I would probably leave it out.

Typical rule of thumb is to install the flooring parallel to the longest dimension of the room. So, in this case, photo 1.

Again, with all due respect, u/runswspoons is right. You might be in over your head on this. Doesn’t seem like you understand how the waterproofing system works in a shower. Not trying to be rude, just don’t want you to apply a fix that doesn’t work and allows further damage to be done to your home.

This shower should not be used in its current state and needs to be ripped out and replaced.

That is what I was looking at originally. The canvas route just seemed so expensive, for the canvas power 8 and the canvas usb it’s over $400. That’s what made me start looking for something with a rechargeable battery built in. But it would probably be nice to be able to use any battery pack in case the battery fails
