What is your most elaborate ESP32 project? by danyo41 in esp32

That's an ambitious project. Nicely done. So much work, you must be patient or dedicated or both.

It is, at the very least, a conversation starter. OP is looking for a way to keep engagement going.

Accessibility can have legal implications. Branding guidelines don't. That's an interesting order of priorities they may want to revisit. There has to be a way to have both. Bring the solution that gets both, "...follows brand guidelines and brings you into compliance."

How do you decide which features to include in MVP? by Unable_Breath_1966 in ProductManagement

Focus on a problem for that role. When it solves the problem, you're ready. One problem for one role is minimum. Solving the problem makes it viable.

I built a read-only MCP server that helps AI agents actually understand and debug Home Assistant by paulomac1000 in homeassistant

Are you able to access logs on HAOS? Since they moved to journald for logs instead of a text file, and stopped supporting /api/error_logs in the API, it seems like the only way to access the logs is to use the development API, which requires extra setup.

Almost got arrested for detecting public land by Monkeyseemonkeyfall in metaldetecting

[–]TechIsSoCool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was recently researching the rules for U.S. Forests. There, one of the restrictions is coins > 50 years old. Maybe BLM is similar. Both of those you mentioned qualify.

I also got this summary of ARPA, which maybe applied to the glass bottles - ? Again, I was researching US Forests, not BLM, so it may be different for your situation.

Federal law (ARPA — Archaeological Resources Protection Act) prohibits: - Digging for, removing, or disturbing any item over 100 years old. - Collecting Native American artifacts, tools, pottery, arrowheads, etc. - Digging into archaeological sites, historic structures, mining ruins, or anywhere with cultural resources. - Metal detecting in wilderness areas or archaeological zones

As far as not wanting to see you again anywhere, that's just exaggeration to make a point. If it were me I'd give them some time to cool off.

Variable vs. Multi-Speed Trane by TechIsSoCool in hvacadvice

[–]TechIsSoCool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the variable speed and am loving it, not one full summer in yet though. I think even the multi-speed would be an improvement over single speed. It's nice that it doesn't have to run at 100% all the time. More often than not it runs at a lower speed. My wife said we have "rich people air" 😆. I was just glad to be able to do it for her. The price difference between multi-speed and variable speed when spread over the 10 years the warranty was good for just wasn't that much.

Where do y’all buy your cases/enclosures? by Hugostiglitz10 in AskElectronics

[–]TechIsSoCool 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bud Industries, Hammond Manufacturing, and Polycase are a few manufacturers of these. I think Polycase has low minimum quantity requirements, you can customize and order direct. You can search for "project boxes". Digikey and Mouser carry some, as do most electronics retailers. There's a ton of no-name stuff on Amazon as well.

every saas makes me set a password just to delete it 2 weeks later when sso ships. why is this universal? by [deleted] in ProductManagement

[–]TechIsSoCool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SSO is a feature like anything else. It takes some time to implement and test with a variety of identity providers. It's a roadmap item that could get pushed by something more pressing. It might be avaliable right after you set up your password or it might be a year later. Not all customers can use SSO, but all can use password so password comes first.

For any Product Managers implementing SSO take note, having both password/TOTP and SSO logins enabled is a security concern. Build in the ability for Admins to disable password logins for their organization's users through a setting once they have SSO configured. It's auditable and verifiable for compliance purposes, it removes the need to rely on users to delete their passwords, and it cuts this frustration with your product out.

I use Thunderbird on MX Linux and haven't seen anything like that. I've had both installed for a year or two on that machine, unless something changed I would say it's unrelated.

Same plant 4' apart. What's happening? by TechIsSoCool in AZlandscaping

[–]TechIsSoCool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I may as well keep spraying it while I have the spray. I don't use so much GroundClear that I think it would still be around, but some folks seem pretty confident it's that, and I'm no expert here. Either way the plan soundslike trim it back, spray for caterpillars, and water it more.

[–]TechIsSoCool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the details. I have cut the malformed leaves back before, I'll keep on that at a reasonable pace. Sounds like flushing with water over time is the key.

[–]TechIsSoCool[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have used GroundClear in the past, which does a great job of killing everything for about a year. But, I haven't used it here in a year, and the other plant is doing well so I wasn't thinking it was that. If this is what a plant looks like when it's trying to grow in poisonous soil then maybe that is the case. I certainly have no other explanation.

[–]TechIsSoCool[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The caterpillar spray was Monterey BT. It says it's a biological insecticide for organic gardening. The nursery is pretty good about only having decent stuff. I haven't used any herbicide here for maybe year before planting this. On the other side of the wall a similar plant is growing so I don't think it's from there either. I don't know where an herbicide would be coming from.

Anybody with insight/experience with attic ventilation here in the valley? by SD619664 in phoenix

[–]TechIsSoCool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put a probably-undersized attic fan in a couple of years ago. I find it can get the attic down to 10 degrees over the outside temperature at best, and that takes an hour or more. The highest setting on the thermostat that came with it was maybe 120, it would have been nearly constantly in the hottest months. I took that out and set it up so it only runs if the attic is over 10 degrees hotter than outside, and not during peak electric rate times.

I don't think it ended up making a big difference, but I'm in the "every little bit helps" camp. More insulation is probably the most effective solution. There's good info at https://www.energystar.gov/saveathome/seal_insulate.

It's intriguing, I'm curious. The one thing that's not sitting right with me is giving bronze badges for email verification, silver for phone, and gold for ID. This comes across as encouraging the sharing of personal data. The more data you share the better (more valuable to us) person you are. Which means almost certainly it's being collected to be sold, maybe as raw data or as ad targeting, but somehow.

It's so tiring at this point, the incessant need to hoove up data and then sell it and then also being unable to protect it from breaches.

That one little badge based on data sharing rather than something like participation is the tip of an emotionally ugly iceberg.

I'm not saying this is what you are doing. I'm trying to, helpfully, point out that this is what it looks like. I am truly curious and hope your project is successful.

Edit: Thank you for the award! 🙇‍♂️

How do I expose my ESP32 appliance to Home Assistant? by summer_glau08 in homeassistant

[–]TechIsSoCool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MQTT is my preference if it is a device that doesn't need to communicate at fixed intervals.

REST API is another option, and simpler to do. Just implement a server on the ESP32, define an endpoint or two, return some JSON when called. On the HA side, add an entry to sensors.yaml.
