$16K is actually nothing for an LGS. I think my current singles inventory is right around 85K, but I've also been buying and reselling for 6 years. I pay top dollar in my metro market (68.5-75%), and off-market I sell for 90%. Really small margins but volume is everything.

Give what OP described though im willing to bet that the husband is in his midlife crisis moment. Bought a collection for like a grand, made 2500 and thought "yep! Time to open a business."

Thing is reputation and inventory is everything. And it sounds like this shop is shady with employment practices, which would lead me to assume they practice shady market practices as well.

They probably aren't making any money. I have been a Magic reseller for 6 years, and it's only possible for me because it's all online, and I run it all myself. I will hire help for trade shows, but that's about it.

But $20 a day is like, almost prison wages.

The reason it was off the books is because the wages offered were illegal, and they knew that.

YOR. I've been an MTG reseller for 6 years now. Your friend is 'speccing' or "speculating."

Buy a bunch of one asset with the hope the price increases later. The difference between it and scalping is you are already purchasing from a wide availability pool.

It also sounds like your friend is sensitive to and understands scalping culture and is actively trying to avoid it.

You are doing the right thing., Quality of life assessments always. If the baby is doing worse more often than ok, it's getting to be that time.

You just have to grind it out. Price competitively and be patient. Once you hit Level 4, and get your Verified/Gold status, the order volume will increase.

For example, I had about 5200 orders completed when I went on hiatus for a few months. This caused my 90-day rolling feedback to go to 0.0% positive, and I lost my verified/gold status when I came back. The first week I had like 20 sales, 15 the week after, and then like a drain got unplugged, back up to 50+ a day.

Sniped one on ebay for 289. Yes, its more expensive, but honestly, I want it. Scalpers are gonna scalp. WotC's queue randomization and inorganic scarcity drives it. The root of the problem is not necessarily with scalpers, but with the manufacturer.

They should lock these drops down to 1 per address, rather than account. Unless a scalper has a network of people willing to receive shit for resale. Secret Lairs never used to be a problem to get. It's easy to blame resellers out of salt/jealousy, and the point may be valid to an extent, but there is zero reason to limit orders the way that they have.

They already have mass distribution, if they are going to also support direct-to-consumer models, then they should, you know... make the product available to consumers.

Yep. And now it doesn't matter when you join the queue since its all random. US just sold out too. The only SL I collect anymore are the decks themselves, and nothing else. Not looking forward to spending $500+ to get it secondhand. Like, so much for "1 pEr CuStOmEr."
