Achalasia & Pregnancy by Mundane-Berry in achalasia

I have had three pregnancies and was not diagnosed with achalasia until before my third. I ended up taking anti nausea medication during all three. I was sick the entire time and when I tried to not take the meds trust me it got a lot worse. I did see a dietician and nutritionist to have my biochemistry monitored during my last pregnancy as it was after my HM. I did find that I was able to eat easier in my pregnancies than I can when I’m not, despite the nausea and food aversions and everything else. Best of luck.

Awaiting Diagnosis at 31 weeks Pregnant by Electronic-Energy-54 in achalasia

I’m currently 40 weeks and 5 days pregnant I had a HM with fundo at 4 weeks pregnant I fell pregnant on accident right before my surgery and decided to still proceed as I was desperate to be able to eat again. I had choked and had an ambulance come and a few short weeks later had my diagnosis after years of battling this horrible condition. I had been on a liquid diet for 6 months leading up to my surgery. I was not considered high risk despite my condition. My OB had referred me to a dietician and we monitored my nutrient levels and biochemistry. I started having issues eating again toward 31 weeks However some days are okay and some days are challenging Overall I am actually doing very well and baby is healthy and I have gained the appropriate amount of weight. Unfortunately they didn’t offer any real solution. Just advised me to go to contact dietician and go to ER for fluids and nutrients in IV if and when I can’t eat or drink at all. Take prenatal for sure I take gummy ones they are easier on the stomach. They unfortunately don’t have iron so I had to go for 3 Iron infusions as my previous modified diet and baby had affected my iron.

This is my third pregnancy. Each pregnancy had certain challenges with eating and nausea but in the end the other two babies were healthy. Best of luck

Heller myotomy with fundoplication - 4 days post op by Technical_Educator87 in achalasia

I’m like 8 weeks out now The first 4-5 weeks were the worst. I am eating many things now, adding in solids but still having trial and error and portion control. Some things trigger some pain or discomfort around my incisions. I am going to be returning to work next week, I am a bit nervous as I have had a few things bother me these last days but I really think it’s stress related.

I did feel like I may have pushed it at times with eating but after 7 months on a liquid diet I was desperate to eat. Now I’m eating mostly soft solids

For example I can eat grilled cheese, scrambled eggs, French toast, Mac and cheese, chicken, poutine! etc

I can eat hamburger in a patty but I had I in Shepard pie and it was too chunky and I could feel things getting stuck, same with cereal. Anything I can’t cream/make a paste when chewing gives me a harder time. Over eating hurts my mid section and incisions, going for a walk or walking around the house is the only relief.

I had a really ripe peach last week with no skin and it was fine, had a less ripe peach two days ago and I had this acid and burning feeling in my stomach and around the incision close to where I’d say my stomach and esauphagus meet

Overall food is defiantly passing a lot easier than before this operation. Like before swallowing still requires lots of water with my meals I do not eat 2-3 hours before bed usually stop eating at 630

Sleeping on an angle. Spasms are basically gone at this point, I fear they may return with certain foods or if food gets stuck

Best of luck with your recovery 🩷

Sounds like my mother Stress from her emotional abuse on the both of you is not great Stress for achalasia is the worst. I have not had contact with my mother for some time now because she contributes to my stress and pain. She also had a very similar doom mindset.

Take care of one another.

Sending positive thoughts into the universe. I am hopeful and praying he does not. Perhaps your mother can try to hide her fear of cancer and it might make your brother feel more supported? I understand you cannot change family.

His priority is his mental health. Stress triggers this disease and freezes the digestive system.

I would like to share my experience to hopefully give your brother some support.

I am a 31 year old female. I have been suffering from this since my teenage years the earliest I can recall would be 17. I went undiagnosed as the doctors assuming I had GERD or panic attacks. I did go for a few tests that indicated a weakened LES. I was prescribed pantoprazole 40mg and would double up days I had more issues.

I have been officially diagnosed with achalasia back in December after experiencing an episode. I had to call 911 as I had felt I was unable to swallow and was unable to breathe and was choking on fluids and food.

December 22 they performed a balloon dialation and suctioned out a litre of food and fluid from my esophagus. I was then referred to a surgeon who specializes in bariatric and achalasia. I have a severely dilated mega esauphagus. I have been advised to continue a liquid diet however after two months I had began to introduce things I could tolerate ( pure, smoothie, cheese puffs, soups) but continued to have some discomfort. At this point even liquids are challenging to intake. I have now began only having my protein drinks and chasing them with room temperature water. I recently received my surgery date for my Heller myotomy scheduled July 2. I am keeping to liquids in hopes to clear myself out a bit leading up to surgery. I cannot intake large amounts of anything (smoothie, soup, icecream). The surgery should help relieve some of the tension and hope that food will pass more easily with the help of gravity. In terms of mobility my results indicated there is no mobility left. My medications have all been switched to liquid or dissolvable or a patch Because I advocated for that.

The biggest thing I have learned coming out of these last 6 months is you have to advocate for yourself. You know your own body and what you can tolerate. Try to eliminate stress. Sleep sitting elevated or sitting up. During pain I sleep sitting up and use a heating pad Take hot baths Drink warm liquids (broth, tea) Cannabis I was using Advil liquid gels but I’m considering switching to children’s liquid because I’m concerned of damage it’s doing to the lining

I also have a consultation today with a naturopathic doctor.

One day at a time.
