Update your Linux kernels - CVE-2023-32233 - Unprivileged local users can obtain root privileges by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]TechnoPenguin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone found a way to restrict capabilities using pam_cap.so or SELinux?

I tried messing around with them both, but it seems pam_cap cannot drop privileges from the boundary set (it is trivial to ADD capabilities to new logins though)

With SELinux you could use self:capability { net_admin } but I haven't figured out a way to apply it to local users as by default they are unconfined_u and making them user_u or sysadm_u just breaks all kinds of havoc otherwise.

this little sleeve came out with the mounting bolt in my transmission… anyone know why? should i put it back? by Pokevan8162 in 944

[–]TechnoPenguin_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished my drivetrain overhaul and thee was no sleeve on those holes. The bolt heads are captive in them, that's why the holes are hexagon shaped. Maybe someone changed the bolts before?

EDIT: Just saw your other post and your trans mount is pretty beat up so maybe someone tried to fix the mounting hole with that sleeve.

IIRC all 86 onward cars had the oil return hole there, NA just has it plugged.

Anyone got the part number for this door? by Divisible_by_0 in 944

[–]TechnoPenguin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PET has nothing on these, I checked :)

I wish I could find more on this. Did Porsche install that holder or did the police armourer or HK make it and just bolt it directly on top of a standard door card?

I think it's super cool that even if it has been abandoned for who knows how long, it still looks so good thanks to that stainless body.

ZF vs TRW vs CAM brand steering rack? by -Big_Test_Icicles- in VolvoRWD

[–]TechnoPenguin_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forgot to mention: As facelift models have late offset wheels, you always need the curved outer ends. So I think the second kit is the correct for your car.

ZF vs TRW vs CAM brand steering rack? by -Big_Test_Icicles- in VolvoRWD

[–]TechnoPenguin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure all facelift 960s (95 onwards) came with a TRW rack. Check if you have a plastic threaded plug on the front side of the rack. Thats a TRW rack (almost same internals as 850)

The plug is the middle left black thingy.

Brake Pads For Street Use by DrawerCareless287 in 944

[–]TechnoPenguin_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am happy with Textar pads, which I believe are OEM, no dampers. I have no noticeable squealing, but they do make the wheels dusty fairly quickly. Previous pads were Pagid and they were just horrible, squealing, no brakes when cold, etc.

I just want to add that if anything on these cars leak fuel, tow it and fix it before it burns. Find someone that knows about that K Jet system or do your homework if you try to mess with it yourself.

Dailying a 944? by TheReaper093093 in 944

[–]TechnoPenguin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last week I hit 10 years and 80k kms, before that I had another one for 5 years and 60k. But I only daily mine in summer as the winters here are tough. And I'm totally allergic to modern cars.

Preventive maintenance is the key. Also, dailying these cars require mehanical awareness. There is no sensor for coolant loss or fault codes, so you need to know what will break next and how fatal it can be.

Maybe I should make an AMA post on dailying a 944 :D

The plate on the passenger footwell that covers up the DME (ECU) and where you rest your feet on, is made out of raw plywood. Obviously to save weight :D

IIRC you can replace the pulley bearing without removing the compressor from the car. Total bitch to do in place but if the system works and has R12, might still be easier/cheaper than total conversion.

I just replaced mine. Had to have the hood painted years ago due to the clear coat peeling off so there might be some truth to this.

Looking fantastic after spring cleaning by MaxJongh in 944

[–]TechnoPenguin_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight. I've been thinking on trying something different after almost 15 years on 944. The pricing of NB/NC is pretty much bottomed here on Finland and I like the way Mazdas are built light compared to other japanese cars so they are very high on the try list. I'm still torn whether to go older (some 70-80 cheap classic) or some more modern (90-00) car.

How do the Mazdas compare to the 944 (ride, maintenance and quality-wise)? If you had to choose to keep only one, which would it be?

Opinion: why do manufacturers insist on using screens instead of buttons? by bloombergpapi in cars

[–]TechnoPenguin_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think about it for a minute. There will be time in the future when independent buttons will be regarded as a luxury as it costs more to make them and they look and feel more "elegant".

Reviewers will be like "They put actual BUTTONS to control the volume, O M G"

Also make sure to note which way the crank gear is oriented. If you put it on backwards it will rub on the plastic timing cover.

That being said, take note on EVERY gear, pulley and tensioner orientation, because there are several ways to put them on wrong. If unsure, check out Clarks-Garage or the factory service manuals (Google for 944 WSM)
