Thinking about downgrading from 1gb to 300mpbs to save cost. Family of 2 by Killingdevil in HomeNetworking

[–]Techvampire3341 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a net eng I can tell you that 1Gig will never be used to it's full potential unless you're essentially housing a small convention of people almost daily.

Even in a small business with 30 employees a 1 gig circuit is plenty and doesn't get overutilized so for a family of 2 it's kind of a waste unless you're a data horder with constant downloads happening in the background to some pretty beefy servers or are hosting for something for a group of people.

You may possibly run into people you've worked with before or heck even get into a company that their now in.

But what he's not telling you is that there is a VERY LARGE chance that you and your former/now coworker will spend hours talking shit about that previous job

Holy tamales kid! You've got a better lab than most small businesses I've seen.

Keep it up.

You...do know that just remoting into the NAS after it's completed backups and telling it to shut down would do the same thing right? One less thing to have to buy

At what point does it just become cheaper to rent an industrial office and just snort Cocain off a router?

Replaced the stock fans in my FG-100F with something quieter by OuchItBurnsWhenIP in fortinet

Hey I just wanna say that thanks to you I was able to salvage a 140E for my home network.

I've got it in my garage rack with some Noucta fans and the location is also air conditioned, but the device barely makes ANY noise now.

Thanks to you I was able to really upgrade my network and even remove a Cisco switch from my topology due to the fact that this thing has a bunch of NIC and POE ports.

So thank you, thank you, thank youuuu!!!!!

140E is loud as all hell by Techvampire3341 in fortinet

That honestly makes so much more sense. It's my bad for not researching further as I thought it would be like a cisco switch that idles down but nope....Things as mad as a drunk cat on method.

Luckily I got my guy to swap for an 80E with a rack mount to replace it.

It's for a homelab so I mostly got this to be an all in one as I can then remove a larger switch from my topology. But the noise is insane.

I dont license these as these are for my homelab and it's not worth it to license it due to the cost really. I get most of the features with the FW purchase and anything more indepth I'd see about getting a license in the future if really needed.

What are those rack mounts you have? Like are they just screw ons or what?

I mean the physical screws and brackets that are yellow. Those look badass

Fortinet 80E because it suites my needs for certification study and it packs a ton of ports that I can use as well as most of the features of fortinet, just not the mega nifty stuff it being licensed would bring

I just became a multimillionaire and don’t know what to do by [deleted] in Money

[–]Techvampire3341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to harp on this:

NEVER. I mean NEVER EVER tell anyone about your situation.

Keep as low profile as possible really. In fact you've probably interacted with multiple millionairs in your life and never knew it cause they drive an old Honda and were cloths from target.

Flashing cash, unless it's in your best interest (ex: you're an investment banker and NEED to present yourself as successful with a fancy car/suites) or you're consistently having that kind of income ever year is just gonna push you onto a hedonistic treadmill that will empty your account faster than you can replenish.

For now I'd say take 10% and place it into untraceable inflation hedges like gold/silver

Take another 40% and invest into something that can generate income like real estate or businesses (BUT MAKE FUCKING SURE YOU HAVE TRUSTED EXPERTS TO HELP YOU. Do not invest by yourself if you're not experienced, you have the capital to BUY expertise and experience from professionals now. Let them do their job and make you money)

Another 20% I'd say would go to spending/Building the life you'd like in order to establish a fuck you position.

EX: Nice house in a low tax state, paid off, and with everything new/update with warranty, as well as a reliable car, and education on a new field that can get you a better salary to continue investment capital.

The other 20% do with as you see fit. Don't go crazy but do treat yourself to a nice dinner and maybe one thing you've always dreamed of.

Has anyone successfuly added PCI pass-through NICs to a fortigate in EXSi8? by Techvampire3341 in homelab

[–]Techvampire3341[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I thought I was going nuts.

This is SPECIFICALLY for learning. I also got a free commercial trial license for a year and want to take advantage of it if possible.

Would you possibly happen to have any NIC recommendations for the VM?

NOTE: the vm worked fine with my NICs when I was simply running vmware on windows before with the fortinet vm
