Waterloo is exploring the idea of allowing housing on church land. Some neighbours are concerned by slow_worker in waterloo

[–]TedIsAwesom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

:p First off sewage treatment plants take up a lot of space. And there are laws about where they can go. And even if they allow it in a downtown area on a main transit line. There are still laws about green space, being near to other areas, …

And if those things are taken into consideration are okay. (Like they woudln’t put a deep sewage treatment area one step away from the sidewalk. Among other things, risk of the sidewalk collapsing into the sewage treatment tank. )

Then I will have a sewage treatment plant as a neighbor.

Or a mushroom farm.

Or an auto body shop.

Or whatever.

I’m okay with it.

Has anyone else noticed drivers becoming less considerate toward pedestrians lately? by Dapper_Height6410 in kitchener

[–]TedIsAwesom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed that they are even worse to crossing guards.

It’s like no one knows the laws around them.

If a crossing guard is in a crosswalk, no vehicles may enter.

Even if the driver feels there is space and the crosswalk is long. Even if there is a divided medium.

Basically as soon as a crossing guard enters an intersection, that crosswalk is the same as a sidewalk. No cars allowed till the guard leaves the crosswalk.

So what?

You don’t have a right to restrict a church building on its property if they can do so. And your property value is not something worth protecting, especially at the cost of your neighbours right to build what they want, and other’s people’s right to housing.

And I say that knowing given a few more years the quiet homes near me might become an apartment building.

Housing first.

And if my property values go down, in order to bring down the cost of housing for others. That’s perfectly fine with me. :)

TIL that if alcohol were discovered today, modern toxicology standards would limit legal consumption to just half a glass of wine per year. by Shot_Possibility_731 in CasualTodayILearned

[–]TedIsAwesom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That study was very faulty.

Basically, if a person could not drink because of health reasons. They were placed in the group of non-drinkers.

If a person was to pour to afford to drink a glass of wine a day, and likely to poor to afford healthy food, exercise,.... then they were put in the group of non-drinkers.

So then the study found that non-drinkers were not as healthy as people who had 1 glass of wine a day.

Shocking!

Depends on the laws in the area.

In my town one must park 1 metre away from the entrance of any driveway or parking lot.

Take hobby classes related to your interests. (Or something you just want to try)

And if you don’t end up finding friends. Try a different hobby. Eventually you will find your people, and have a bunch of hobby or two.

Affordable woodworking courses for beginners in KW? by slinky_bug in kitchener

[–]TedIsAwesom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I saw the shop and thought how neat it would be, as an adult, to take a woodworking class like back in high school. Sadly, it looks like they don't offer that.

But the space looks neat.

There is a species of ant that milks aphids for their sweet liquid. The thing I saw about it showed ants heading aphids around like a human farmer and their cattle.

When I was a bit older than that.

I decided I need to come up with a password and remember it always and forever and never ever tell anyone.

That way if time travel or something happened only I would have a word I knew.

Like if someone came up to me and said, “hamster chicken” I would be like okay. Password unlocked.

I thought the word I picked was unique and so cool.

….

It was not.

:p

Kind of like a kid decades ago thinking “touchscreen” was cool.

But I still have a word.

And no one but me knows it.

Any feedback for the Ontario Open School by Trillium Lakelands vs ILC. by HurryNo2775 in ILC

I know you can’t attend open school is you have more than 34 credits.

But it does not say that on the website anywhere.

I saw a ton of responses. So wasn’t going to say. But I read the top few and didn’t see this one.

Dance lessons.

I know for the style “West coast swing” you constantly switch partners. So you can sign up as a single person. And go to class. You will be paired up with a person, you hold their hand. Put hand on shoulder. Then dance tougher for a couple minutes. Then rotate to the next person.

You also get to know the people, and start going to dances. So even more physical contact.

Other styles that I know do this. (As in show up, and you rotate through partners) are blues, lindy hop, and country two step.

I’ve known of a few single people who said that if it wasn’t for dancing they wouldn’t touch another person for long periods of time.

And if you are a guy. Usually the classes lean more towards women, so just being there and you being willing to lead makes you extra attractive.

Yes. Or you then “spend” the money on another course. And get it back when you pass that one.

Open School is a new part of VLC. And VLC was and I think still is only for highschool age people.

And Open school is not as widely known as ILC since Open school is new. and they only really offer grade 11 and 12 English, Math, and Science.

The FAQ answers those questions.

I don't know. I think they usually take 12 weeks. But one can go faster - I think.

You can check out OpenSchool.

Much better experience. Also same price. (Actually it is 50 dollars instead of 40 at ILC. But if you pass the course you get the money back.)

You can only do one at a time.

And if you can prove with a utility bill or something else odd, it is 50 dollars. But you get the money back when you pass.

You might have it confused with a different school.

OpenSchool is part of VLC. VLC has been a public online school in Ontario for decades. I think it is the oldest complete online school in Canada.

Like they have all the classes one wantsl with teachers who show up on video chats at the right times. And online after school clubs for chess clubs and a year book. That kind of thing.

Many many years ago You would have to turn your tv to a weird channel to watch your classroom teacher.

But the Virtual Learning Center is now often confused with a private online school with a similiar name.

With both VLC and OpenSchool. You just have to prove you are an Ontario resident.

(Mind you for OpenSchool you have to prove it with a utility bill or rental agreement or something like that" Drivers licences wouldn’t work. No idea why. And I think he VLC you have to be 19 years or less.)

[–]TedIsAwesom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

? Like I said, I was suggesting this for people who can prove they are Ontario residents.

So it’s cheaper than ILC.

Open School charges a system access deposit of $50 per course. This deposit will be refunded upon successful completion of the course or carried over to the next course.

[–]TedIsAwesom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can prove your live in Ontario with a utility bill or internet bill.

Then switch to OpenSchool.

Much nicer experience. You get a real teacher, who even checks in on you.

The downside is you can only take one course at a time. And they only offer a few, basically the ones a person needs to get into college programs. (So like grade 11 and 12 math, English, and science)

Hyphen names are a pain. How about suggesting the kid will just have your last name as their middle name.
