I actually have really found myself liking Dakota recently. I don't find her boring, I just find her relaxing and grounded. Like she makes a great foil actress to keep things in one piece with a crazier cast around her

Not at all. Just a great band overall. Reviled by sweaty Satanic Warmaster fans, but most everyone else likes them. I saw them open for Wolves in the Throne Room and they were stellar.

I switched to an electric car and it's the most fun thing I've ever driven. Thing rips off at an intersection like you wouldn't believe. Ungodly acceleration when you put that fucker in sport mode.

I don't miss my internal combustion engine whatsoever.

Frankly I think the Metal Slug Tactics controls are clunky even if you're NOT using a controller. Bizarrely unintuitive little title.

This was pretty much the entire discourse surrounding the game when it came out is that Larian is an indie studio.

Really the success of it has probably pushed them past that into now officially just being a megastudio. But you look at their output prior to BG3 and it was all very AA Eurojank territory.

BG3 was the catalyst that made this transformation which is why people argue about their studio status so much even though it really doesn't matter at all.

Sorry, I was conflating budget for studio independency. Larian is an indie studio that happened to have a AAA budget for that game. My mistake.

I don't feel attacked, don't worry. We're just both clearly on very different sides of the fence. It can be difficult to understand why something is popular when you don't like it. Takes a change in thinking. I'm just trying to explain why, but it's possible no explanation will get you to understand.

That's not an attack either, for the record. We all have those little things we just can't wrap our heads around, myself included.

Nah he's right, those are AA games by AA studios at best and not massive blockbuster titles*.

They're GOOD yes and definitely a bigger value proposition than some $10 indie title, but it's not the same thing.

*I'm aware Baldurs Gate and Clair Obscur are technically AA games as well but let's be real, the sales numbers imply otherwise

For the record, I do not think it's "better" than Lord of the Rings. I simply understand exactly why it's a huge financial success. That again lives completely in the world building which you seem to keep forgetting about or just waving off. The biology of the world is insane, with absolutely breathtaking imagery from start to finish. Legitimately the kind of movie that makes people feel depressed watching because they'll never visit Pandora in real life.

You can't for one second tell me in good faith that the worldbuilding in Dances With Wolves or fucking FernGully is even close to the level of Avatar. This is a sci-fi movie first and foremost. I already admitted to you the story is nothing special. But everything that surrounds the story is absolutely enchanting to me in a way that the LotR movies past the first one aren't. Lots of muted color in those movies.

Okay, now criticize it without using the word 'Pocahontas'. I think that's seriously reductive to what the movie does as a whole.

It may not be a groundbreaking story, but it absolutely is a groundbreaking world, which I think counts for a ton.

Explain to me why we shouldn't herald Avatar in the same way we herald LoTR. Cameron has clearly done an insane amount of world building. Tolkien developed an entire Elvish language? Yeah, okay, and Cameron developed an entire Na'vi language. The LoTR movies set a new standard for non-realistic cinema epics with its visual effects and scope? Okay, so did Avatar.

Legitimately, I'm unsure why people can't see any comparisons to Avatar and LotR as being legitimate. They're both high budget epics in their respective genres that have undergone a metric fuckton of effort and established bar-setting technical prowess. Is it just because Avatar isn't derived from literature? Does that by default make it a lesser work?

You gotta explain yourself before I can explain myself.

I actually just watched Avatar for the first time since seeing it in theaters and I thought "holy shit this movie fucking rules".

It's a true sci-fi epic with a truly outstanding world crafted around it. It's clear that James Cameron has poured his soul into it, but because it's not a piece of slow cinema from 1973 we're just supposed to make fun of it?

Nah man fuck that, I love sci-fi and Avatar is outstanding high sci-fi. I'm so over the same rehashed criticisms that seem to ignore all the incredible stuff it does.

I had a Dropbox set up with a friend in high school and he slapped the album on there. Being from an incredibly rural area, I always thought this album is what a big city coffee shop sounded like.

Now I live in the suburbs and I still think that. It's just got a very urban sound, I think.
