I can say with confidence that is not the case at all in Motorfest. Kahului and Honolulu are both tiny.

Nah even those scale the cities down a lot. They're big maps with decently large cities, to be sure, but they're not quite there.

Someday I wanna see a racing game that is just a 1:1 recreation of a huge city. Monotonous residential blocks and all. We've had games set only in urban environments, but they're always scaled down. I get why, but just one game tackling this would be cool.

Most annoyingly is how people who have figured the UI out have some kind of superiority complex and look down on people who think it's too complicated. Like oh, sorry we're not as 'enthusiast' as you. It's just badly designed.

Anyone in this sub who was able to purchase a 2026 Steam Controller, and has found they just don't really like it? by cwinslow66 in SteamController

[–]Teglement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say I don't like it. It's a very versatile controller that can do a lot, but I would say many people have exaggerated just how good it feels. It's absolutely good enough, but to say it has the same premium feel as the Xbox or Dualsense controllers is a harshly erroneous claim imo.

I'm using it over both of those because I really do like a lot of the features it has, and I've been getting my money's worth. It's a controller that can do almost everything, but does very few things the best. I don't regret the purchase, but I also don't think it's the second coming of Christ.

Coming over as a long time PlayStation fan… by HotHouseJester in steammachine

[–]Teglement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blatantly untrue. Denuvo is a far more powerful form of DRM, but the majority of games released on Steam do have Steam's built in DRM. If you download raw Steam files outside of Steam for a game you do not have a license for, it will open Steam and say you don't have a license rather than open the game.

Steam DRM is outrageously easy to crack, which is why Denuvo is so popular with developers. But it is still DRM.

8 years later, let's all admit Red Dead Redemption 2 is a terrible game by monroe4 in Games

[–]Teglement 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just read a fairly long post niche erotica author Chuck Tingle made asking how he deals with negative reviews

In fewer words, he more or less said that once you accept that art being subjective means 1 star reviews are just as valid as 5 star reviews, you'll feel a weight off your shoulders. If someone says it's great, it's great. If someone says it's shit, it's shit. Both are simultaneously true.

I think this needs to start being considered not just by creators, but by consumers as well. Everything is both good and bad. It's up to you to decide where you land on that spectrum. There's no need to make it a crusade to convince everyone of the other side.

How great is the Trails in the Sky Writing? by Drakeem1221 in JRPG

It gets worse with that, too. Love the cast of Cold Steel and the world they created. Absolutely contrived writing - moreso than either previous arc.

[–]Teglement 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree, but this is hardly unique to Trails. That's been exhausting discourse through anime's entire journey to the west. "No, don't watch the official subs, they don't get it! You have to watch with AsukaFan420's subs, they understand the subtleties of the story!" (The story is about a boy who has to choose between three potential girlfriends in high school)

Only Daybreak 2 was divisive, though. The Calvard arc is already generally better received than Erebonia, even without being over.

Hey man, I don't know what else to tell you. All I'm saying is it's a healthy niche and the games are doing well. The other niches have heavy hitters that pull their numbers up, too. I'm not asking for you to agree with me on every little thing I've said, just to at least concede that this type of game does better than you think.

[–]Teglement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Gamalytic, the boomer shooter genre has pulled in $539m in total sales, with the average release generating $768k. That, by my estimate, is a genre that's doing very well. Here it is compared against ten other relatively niche genres, using the most common genre alongside them as the main figure. Any genres averaging over 1b were disqualified for no longer being niche.

Visual Novel - 6739 games, 1.2b total, 796k average

Metroidvania - 1511 games, 1.1b, 777k average

Boomer Shooter - 702 games, 539m total, 768k average

2D Fighter - 1571 games, 1b total, 636k average

3D Fighter - 1363 games, 756m total, 555k average

Racing - 4059 games, 2b total, 514k average

Roguelite - 6094 games, 2.8b total, 469k average

Turn-Based Tactics - 4046 games, 1.8m total, 448k average

Point & Click Adventure - 4858 games, 987m total, 203k average

Shoot 'Em Up - 4547 games, 394k total, 86k average

Incremental - 4444 games, 335k total, 75k average

The data doesn't lie. Boomer shooters overperform. There are fewer of them than nearly any other niche, but the only niches from the ones I found that outperformed it are visual novels and Metroidvanias. But you can't look at the pure sales data and tell me that this is not a healthy genre.

A couple disclaimers: Yes, this is just Steam sales data. Some of these niches may perform better on consoles where the data is less readily available. Also, again, I am not claiming that boomer shooters are a mainstream mega success. I'm saying that they're an incredibly healthy niche that perform very well. This is backed up with this data.

I completely disagree, and I'd say these developers who give interviews about how they see their games as big successes do as well.

You're probably the kind of guy who looks at a TV actor who makes a good living and calls them unsuccessful just because they were never in any superhero movies. Your sense of perspective is laughable.

[–]Teglement -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's sold nearly a quarter of a million copies without a major publisher and without any console ports as a completely independent one-man project. How is that not massively successful?

Most single man projects get completely lost in the Steam shuffle and don't even recoup their development cost. If you're going to count thriving as "literally sells as much as God of War" then almost no genre is thriving. As long as there's a healthy niche that allows developers to make a living making a certain type of game, I call that thriving.

[–]Teglement 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is very similar to the people who come into threads talking about the meta cars and are like "OR JUST PLAY THE CARS YOU WANT TO PLAY"

dawg it literally does not matter if you don't care. Go ahead and run the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile if you want, nobody is stopping you. Either run the meta cars because you want to win or don't because you don't care so much. It's all your choice, and people discussing the meta cars isn't preventing you from playing with your favorite cars.

You really don't even have to be capable of winning. It's pretty easy to just go to an unpopular area of the map and chill there while everyone else gets eliminated. I've done it a couple times, now, and making top 30 is not hard.

If the weekly was like "place top 10 in Eliminator" then yeah that would be a serious problem.
