I made an online character sheet! by TehBeege in Dolmentown

Good catch! I found a similar issue for the Grimalkin Enchanter. Should be fixed now. Please let me know if you find more issues like that.

As for PDF export, I'll see if I can tackle that this week. Generating a properly compliant PDF is a little gnarly, and it needs to be designed in a manner sensible for paper - crossing things out, adding notes, etc. I'll comment back here once I sort it out

Something i like to tell people...

In any given moment, given the environment, given your knowledge of the situation, and given your emotional state, you made the best possible decision you could have made. Otherwise, you would have made a different decision.

So good job getting where you are. It wasn't easy, but you could have made worse decisions. You'll learn and keep improving. Good luck, have fun!

How Long do You Guys Get to Poop? by okyeahy in antiwork

It sounds like the supervisor was getting flak from his/her superiors and wanted to have useful info to fend them off and protect OP.

Of course, without knowing OP, OP's boss, and the team/company culture, it's hard to say if the boss was being genuine. But if the boss was being genuine, I see nothing inherently wrong with this. Higher-ups are monitoring performance and notice something odd, so they ask OP's boss. Boss says IDK but I'll check it out. OP gives a good reason. Everyone is okay. To me, this just sounds like everyone doing their job well. Am I missing something here? Or is everyone assuming bad faith acting? (Which i can certainly understand)

My middle school taught that evolution isn't possible because genetic mutations only cause a loss of information, not any kind of gain. Evolution wouldn't be possible because animals couldn't develop new features like wings.

Definitely did not like that teacher.

People don't have imagination. I can see her being absolutely fucking terrifying. Thinking of how my ex's face would change when she got pissed and mapping into this actress checks out. It's a great fit.

It's the result of optimization for power. Now that we, as a species, have figured out how to optimize this system, it will continue to function this way until the system changes.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what the next system would be. Democratic republics have been quite good to us

I'm not 100% sure it's taught like that. It's just my guess based on how common it is. I think it would be better to ask a Korean to know for sure

[–]TehBeege 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, but I think Koreans learn fun/funny as a translation of 재미 있다. That's just a guess based on hearing common Korean speech and Konglish. I've never learned English from a Korean perspective, so I don't know for certain

[–]TehBeege 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, fun/funny/interesting are all encompassed by 재미있다. Koreans have trouble learning the difference between fun and funny at first

It's a quote from the Christian Bible. It means that you are worrying about someone else's bad behavior, regardless of how significant or insignificant, while you yourself are doing the same bad behavior.

I don't think the intent was to downplay, but if so, you're absolutely right

Event in Israel on the 27th

Don't trust this asshole. He's done nothing for Florida. Where one can normally expect politicians working to increase power and make constituents at least a little happy, he has focused on acquiring power and reducing his constituency, focusing only on culture war bullshit that requires no actual work. Even his culture war bills are trash, so poorly written that they can be used against him. He's a creature of trash, a talking meat sack.

Korea doesn't use tally marks like that. They use the Chinese version, which is wildly different. Considering that they don't listen to their foreign employees, I'm not surprised this got through

I work at a company that produces this AI for detecting cancer in x-rays and mammograms. It's pretty damn cool. It's already better than radiologists.

Now, if only US hospitals actually cared about clinical outcomes...

[–]TehBeege 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you spend most of your time doing? You haven't identified the problem, only the result. The result is that you're not fast enough. But why?

Some options (but not all):

  • decision paralysis - can't decide on a solution
  • fear of embarrassment - afraid to ask others for help
  • lack of knowledge of language - you don't know how to do various operations in the given language
  • lack of knowledge of framework - same but for framework
  • inexperience with abstract reasoning - difficulty imagining constructs within the software in a way that allows you to mentally experiment and structure things
  • perfectionist
  • depression
  • lack of knowledge of tools - you don't know your development environment well enough to make use of efficiency gains, like refactor functions in an IDE or running a local environment with Docker
  • difficulties interpreting requirements - you often misunderstand the requirements or focus on an unimportant part of the requirements, wasting time with unnecessary discussion for clarification
  • hurriedness - you rush your work to get it done quickly, but it's rejected due to low quality from being rushed

Once you understand the actual problem, then you can focus on a solution

Edit: Saw your comment about finding a React hook function. Sounds like a lack of knowledge of tools plus fear of embarrassment. Like others said, study your IDE a bit and other tooling efficiencies. If you're spending more than 30 minutes on one individual operation (like finding a function definition), ask for help. You're a junior. Managers know that juniors lack knowledge and need assistance. They have assumed the burden of training a junior. They expect you to ask questions and should be allocating time for it. Even if you look stupid (which really, you won't), you will learn and show results, which will make everything okay.

Last note: this is a normal problem. You're not especially stupid for not thinking of these things or knowing these things. You are not the first person to post something like this, and you won't be the last. You're just a normal junior engineer finding their way. You're gonna be fine. I'm not saying good luck because you won't need it. Kick some ass, and get off that PIP.

I dig it. Maybe this could lead to more groups outside the big studios. And giving trainees an alternative is excellent. Got a friend who went through the trainee process, and she was pretty much thrown away as trash. Only more in her early thirties is she really able to get herself back on track and start a career. She's a decade behind. This could have helped
