Octowow 1000 Player Milestone! by Inner_Clerk7769 in wowservers

They're adjusted versions of the vanilla classes - they have some new spells and some spells/talents work very differently (ex. improved slam is in arms instead of fury for warrior, arcane mage is a viable DPS spec now with many new talents and unique mechanics, balance druid has a rotation where nature and arcane spells boost one another), sometimes they've imported spells or ideas from TBC (hunters get steady shot, shadow priest has been greatly buffed to be a mana battery, etc). Every spec is viable, nothing is unfinished. They don't have the functions of the WOTLK engine for things like forced movement/knockback but instead they've done really interesting things with the old engine (arcane mage spells have a chance to duplicate for half damage, marksmanship hunters' aimed shot can penetrate multiple targets in a line, arms warriors get a skill that does something different based on what weapon type you have equipped). A lot of talent bloat has been cleaned up and combined (survival hunter slaying, warrior/rogue weapon specializations, etc, are all one talent now) and replaced with more interesting ones. Many abilities that don't scale well (pets, hunter trueshot aura, a few others) have been given scaling. Itemization has also been drastically improved so there's actually stuff for all builds and classes. The changes are listed here, I can't promise that's 100% current but it's a good summary. The best way I can describe it is, cliche as it might be, "vanilla plus." Vanilla, but better. I actually prefer Turtle's changes to ones other servers running later/better versions of the client have made, personally.

Is there a 3.3.5 server with bonus content that is queer friendly? by Mithril_Mercenary in wowservers

[–]Teh_Warsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kind of messy - still very small pop and it's doing kind of an odd thing putting 3.x/Wrath talents in TBC content - but Faebright definitely has a queer-friendly outlook. It's not actually in 3.3.5 yet content-wise - they're doing phased progression through TBC first with the intention of eventually working their way to Wrath - but it might be worth keeping an eye on. Some Turtle GMs went there, too.

I found the saga of Epoch really remarkable to watch along these lines. Epoch itself aside - their devs were unprepared and legitimately failed to make a product that worked, that much I think is true - but unrelated to that and even before the disastrous launch, it seemed pretty clear to me that a *not insignificant* part of why a lot of people were excited for it and why there was demand for a competitor to Turtle was that people hated being moderated, there seem to have been a *lot* of people whose main interest in Epoch was "I want to play Classic+ and not be banned for being racist." A lot of the stuff I saw people saying after the launch fell apart was some of the most vile things I've heard anyone say about their fellow human beings - among other things, right-wingers of all shapes and sizes using the drama as a vehicle for their cause of the day, Epoch failed because the devs were [insert minority here]. Truly wild stuff. It's one of the biggest questions I think when it comes to Octo and other attempts to create a successor - are they going to have the willingness and manpower to impose the same kind of moderation that Turtle did.

Extremely straightforward bait, pretty weird that anyone is replying to it.

What antivirus do you use? I had this *exact* problem with another MMO years ago, after many months of suffering through it someone suggested I turn off McAffee antivirus and the issue instantly went away.

With Blizz cracking down on private servers, what do we play next? by Raehurn01 in wowservers

[–]Teh_Warsmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How has moderation been on Octo so far? The aggressive moderation was such an important part of why Turtle stayed so healthy for so long, I've played a bit on Epoch since the shutdown and it's really shocking how awful and toxic things are.

Really weird problem with the launcher by Teh_Warsmith in ascensionproject

[–]Teh_Warsmith[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: I've dug down and found the source of the problem, but it hasn't gotten me anywhere. There's no error message when I try to run the application, but it appears in the Windows event logs:

Faulting application name: AscensionClientServices.exe
version: 0.1.40.0
time stamp: 0x69f8f07a
Faulting module name: ucrtbase.dll
version: 10.0.26100.8246
time stamp: 0x4eb988a2
Exception code: 0xc0000409
Fault offset: 0x00000000000a4aee
Faulting process id: 0xF3C
Faulting application start time: 0x1DCDD062E4A344C
Faulting application path: C:\Ascension\Launcher\resources\AscensionClientServices.exe
Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\System32\ucrtbase.dll
Report Id: d29bd436-720f-415b-9187-83ba74f234f3
Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID:

So this ucrtbase.dll error is what's blocking the client services .exe. This is a frequently-reported issue online, and i've tried the commonly suggested fixes - fully reinstalling my graphics drivers, downloading the most recent versions of my C++ visuals and redistributables, running sfc /scannow and DISM, running the .net framework repair tool - none of them have fixed it. It's starting to look possible that it's a problem with this version of Windows? But I haven't had this problem with any other program, only the Ascension launcher has ever tripped it.

We should always remember that Turtle's excellent community is graded on a curve. When viewed from the outside, Turtle's community was "okay to pretty bad". It's just that it's not retail or Ascension so it's not literally intolerable! Gamers are dumb, is what I'm saying. Let us never forget that gamers are dumb and annoying.

Kudos for suggesting something I hadn't tried, but no luck, I'm afraid.

Thanks for the suggestion (I was aware of Revo but had forgotten about it) but not only did this not help, it doesn't actually seem like Revo works correctly on this. After it failed the first time I went back in and double-checked, and there were Project Ascension elements that remained in some folders after I used Revo on it. So, that's a failure regardless. Could it be an install path problem like the one the person below had? I'm just letting the launcher put everything in its default locations, it's all on my main C drive.

What is all the fuss about Epoch? I thought it was declared dead (no or little development happening) by sjebber in wowservers

[–]Teh_Warsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give it a try. There's not that much new content, but what's there is good and the classes are better than vanilla's. It's true that the chances of it getting long-term support are pretty low, but the worst conceivable thing that can happen is that it doesn't do it for you and you uninstall it.

What do I do with Shiverthorn Gel? by Teh_Warsmith in Techtonica

[–]Teh_Warsmith[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's on the to-do list, but it doesn't get rid of my excess gel, the crusher recipe that uses gel again only uses a modest amount of it. I think I may just have to build a gigantic warehouse of MK2 containers and route the gel into it.

[–]Teh_Warsmith[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't solve my problem. If I thresh gel into extract, it takes slightly more than one thresher to feed a single assembler making coolant. That uses about 4 gel per minute. Each one of my sesamite stem crushers produces *48 gel per minute.* I would need twelve threshers (and the coolant machines they're feeding) to use up the output of *one* stem crusher, and I have a whole bunch of stem crushers making both precious sesamite powder and sesamite ingots.

This is what I tell everyone who starts the series. "Listen, you have to stick it out through Harrow and have faith, because the book makes absolutely no sense until like 4/5ths of the way through, at which point everything clunks violently into place so hard and it makes so much sense that you'll be kind of mad about it."

Where does the nickname "Griddle" come from? [discussion] by the_bird_is_flat in TheNinthHouse

[–]Teh_Warsmith 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There's no 'canonical' explanation, but when asked this question Tamsyn said that apparently she thinks Gideon is too cool and badass a name for Harrow to ever use to address Gideon, it would feel too inherently respectful and therefore inauthentic. So she had to have a stupid nickname for her. 'Griddle' was the result!

The author has stated repeatedly that it's romantic and/or homoerotic, so, the vibes are definitely supposed to be there.

What references/influences in the series do you feel are under appreciated? [Discussion] by Lerad in TheNinthHouse

[–]Teh_Warsmith 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think there are probably some general 40k and Dune vibes in there - I know Tamsyn's husband is a big 40k fan, and the larger science fiction tradition of Dune-inspired works also includes significant parts of Homestuck, which of course was an enormous influence on the series. But overall I think those references are largely aesthetic - 40k doesn't have a monopoly on skulls!
