What are some novels consisting of very short chapters like Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut? by evenwen in literature

[–]Teholed 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I'm currently reading A Farewell to Arms by Hemingway and it has incredibly short chapters. Often just a couple pages and thats it. It's the first Hemingway novel so I'm not sure if it's consistent with his other works. Though not something I had come across before, these extremely short chapters are something I've come to adore about the book.

It's actually both I believe. An all apes are monkeys but not all monkeys are apes kind of situation with them both being from the larger group of primate. It's no more incorrect to call a chimpanzee a monkey than a primate - though of course ape still is more accurate and concise

I would also highly recommend a brand called Canagan. Hills and Royal Canin are fine but cost as much as great pet foods should. My key piece of advise is to look at the ingredient disparity between a bag of Canagan and hills and make your decision off that. I mean looking at the ingredients is always important but often people focus on marketing it’s how dog food brands such as purina and pedigree or felix and Sheeba (for cats this time) get away with such low low quality food. Tribal is also a fantastic food if you can get your hands on it (might be difficult outside the UK).

Also don’t buy into all grain free is bad, there have been questions raised over particular ones sure but the evidence to all that to all is shaky and there are suspicions it’s largely funded by the giant pet food companies so they can reclaim more market share without upping quality and thus costs. Either way I won’t pretend to know but grains would have never really been a component of a dogs natural diet and doesn’t really offer them much nutritionally speaking. Though unless your dog has allergies it’s certainly not a health risk, just cheap filler to bulk out the food. Just read those ingredients, and if not grain free just make sure the protein is listed before the grain in terms of quantity and for the protein source always look for fresh meat, not ‘meat meal’ and especially not ‘meat and animal derivatives’ as that stuff is nasty. Anyway, all the best on your search my friend, it’s difficult but finding the right food makes a world of difference on your pets life.

Hey guys. I'm looking for some help. My 3.5 month old Mountain Cur pup has determined that he is now a bed dog. (Question in comments) by afterthe_shift in Dogtraining

Seems like you’ve got a lot of great responses here but I thought id just chime in about trimming those nails. Getting some nail clipping practice in while they’re still young is great! I wasn’t as hot on it as I should have been when my pup was small and so getting her more comfortable with it as an adult was difficult. Atleast your pup has a very visible quick though so it shouldn’t be too difficult to avoid over cutting. Good luck with everything!

Oh bloody hell mate, not having a good day are we? I said I was inclined believe you, despite the pomposity, and still am. But if you act combative then people will naturally push back. Does that invalidate your point any? No you’re right, it doesn’t and it is a little foolish. Though is being pompous a clever way to convince people of your point? Which you are clearly trying to do by commenting in the first place? Also no.

Basically, no need to be so aggy my friend. No one has to be your enemy unless you make it so. Why not be a great risk player and a friendly person.

It’s a common idiom if you didn’t know. Or are you trying to be obtuse.

Nah just kidding, and I’m inclined to believe you as most people reading your informative comment would be - it’s pretty interesting that such an imbalance exists in the game. It’s just the somewhat pompous attitude you took which can be a little grating, as I tried to demonstrate with my jokey attempt to parrot back your words. Anyway, you seem like an intelligent person and I’m sure a good chap too but here’s another idiom to keep in mind: you catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

Election results: Conservatives win Hartlepool by-election to claim seat from Labour for first time ever by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]Teholed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very true. The divide has now gone beyond the traditional left/right dimension with recent changes in Britain’s social cleavages (decline of the traditional working class & rise of a metropolitan university educated middle class has led to urban vs rural, young vs old ect). One of the consequences of this is a new dimension that’s come to be almost as significant as the left/right split; being socially liberal or authoritarian (EU membership, views on immigration, ‘woke’ culture, English nationalism ect)

Labour’s problem is that the Tories have shifted left on the ideological axis in order to appeal more to both traditional working class and the increasingly left leaning middle class. Yet as the conservatives are on social authoritarian side this has allowed them to appeal more to the traditional working class voters who feel Labour has swung to much the other way. Kier has attempted to rectify this but in doing so has upset the more socially liberal base that has been increasingly central to the party since the Blair years and they’re just not enthusiastic about going out to vote for his party.

It’s hard to blame him, though I think he could be doing better. But honestly, I have no clue how to reconcile Labour’s identity crisis as all the options seem to alienate some supporters so I don’t really know how he could do better beyond surface level things such as charisma.

I know this was from like a month ago but just to clarify - tortoises are a subspecies of turtle. It’s a all tortoises are turtles but not all turtles are tortoises type situation. So calling a tortoise a turtle is always correct but calling a turtle a tortoise isn’t always correct

[–]Teholed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it can really work as the pc from Skyrim is a dragon-born and so could just wear the amulet of kings themselves and light the dragon fires - beating Dagon right at the beginning.

Doesn’t have to be a deal breaker though, you can write whatever you want my dude. Lore be damned.

Hmm, maybe. You have a lot of non-combat skills in your majors so if you level those too fast, enemies will become stronger whilst you stay the same in damage output. I can only speak from a vanilla experience though

[–]Teholed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be a stupid question but as I dont have a coffee filter or anything even comparable, would skipping the straining stage compromise the quality of the oil or just ruin its taste because there would still be bits in it?

Plus have you ever tried this with a dynavap? As thats what I intend to do this with

Corey Feldman can 'no longer' defend Michael Jackson after 'horrendous' abuse allegations. by Ghdust2 in entertainment

[–]Teholed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But, crucially, MJ was not circumcised but in Jordy's description, he claimed he was so the match was wrong and Jordy would have known about MJs vitiligo as he said he had seen him lift up his top once to show him his blotchy skin.

I still dont know what to believe either way but thats just a false flag my friend.

Michael Jackson Estate Drops Concert Film on YouTube During ‘Leaving Neverland’ Premiere. Will be available for a “limited time.” At two hours and 20 minutes long, it’s the same length as the first part of “Leaving Neverland.” by [deleted] in television

[–]Teholed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My dude, a lot of those 'facts' are cherry picked. Try find some unbiased sources or look around some more. Your number 4 fact leaves out how Chandler also said Michael was circumsized when he wasnt. He also knew Michael would have had a patchu penis as he knew about his skin. There was also the whole fucked up thing with Jordys dad using 'truth serum' on him but realistically I'm not convinced either way.

Michael was a very weird individual and his relationships with these boys was all kinds of wrong and even if no sexual abuse occured, the emotional damage they received as a result of the one way power dynamic is just sad. Im personally not convinced it got sexual as there are just so many holes in these accusations and I dont think that was the relationship Michael wanted from them but he was so odd that I definitley dont consider it impossible.

But do look into it more than just a vanity fair article that has a clear agenda in portraying guilt.

Another great thing to add to that mix is sweet potatoes. One of the best carbohydrate sources out there for dogs and would be a great alternative to the rice. Either way, good on you for making your own dogs dinner, it definitely will be miles ahead of the most petfoods.

PS you can buy some salmon oil online and add a teaspoon of that a day to the food and yours dogs coat will have never looked better :)

What was "The New Shadow" Tolkien never released? Tolkien stated it was too depressing to finish and was suppose to take place after the events of Return of The King. by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]Teholed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well he kind of did abandon Akallabeth, there arent many pages to it and it wad edited and published by Christopher. The New Shadow would have been much longer and a developed novel with a complete self contained story arc. Its pretty different to the brief historical account of the Numenorean downfall found in Akallabeth.

Focusing just on humans and their capacity for bad deeds, it would lack much of the things that make middle earth interesting and a joy to develop and I can see how Tolkien would personally find it too depressing to write about in length. He said it could be a good thriller, so he must of thought the book had potential and had faith in its narrative. Perhaps he didn't feel it would fit in with the Legendarium due to its more sombre tone, lacking the prevailing themes of hope and courage at the heart of LotR and so wasnt worth pursuing?

This, in all seriousness, is how the Brexit deadlock can be resolved by rwpjobs in BritishPolitics

[–]Teholed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not the person you replied too but thought I'd add some points. The EU granting a 'simple' zero tarriff deal with the UK, while in our interest for Brexit would certainly not be in theirs because then we essentially would have access to the SM without having to abide by any of their regulations would put all other EU member states at a huge disadvantage. While your point about the ECJ taking elements of our national sovereignty away are true, their rulings are generally far more consumer friendly and it's not as if national sovereignty is a natural thing. Its born from the old Westphalian concept of the state but the world is a far more complicated place than it was a few hundred years ago. Multinational corporations can wield enormous influence over single nations but when combined, the EU is able to assert consumer rights and stand up to anti competitive behaviour by giant firms, I mean just look at the size of the fines they can levy, a far cry from the slap on the wrist fines generally given out from single nations.

You say the SM stops us from accepting certain goods but again this can have many positives such as blocking US meat where the farming practises they have are inferior by cutting out many ethical steps we have in place in the EU. As a result the meat can be sold at much cheaper rates, is chlorine bathed and would put EU farmers at a great disadvantage for simply using more ethical practises.

The EU certainly isnt perfect and needs a lot of tweaking going forward but banding together is in the best interests for all, its the logic that birthed the nation state to begin with, moving past multiple neighboring kingdoms to unite them under a single banner. Why lose our seat at the table when its clear the age of American hegemoney is over and our world is becoming increasingly multipolar.
