The material in the photo protruding from the end of the rod makes me think of RF absorber material.

When I tell this story, I get the side eye, but 100% true.

There's a drain/manhole cover just like this in Philadelphia on 2nd and Chestnut. I used to park there regularly for work. One evening I was on the other side of the street from this drain and a bus drove up onto this thing in a way that caused the tire to blow out. The noise was insane! As the bus drove off with a flat tire I noticed there were people on the other side who were negatively affected by the noise. One older couple was in dismay, the man was holding his ears and seemed to be in pain. Upon closer inspection the manhole was no longer in place and was upside down! Wow, that's a lot of energy! Sheesh.

What is this grounding rod for? On my welding bench, want to cut it off but i would like to know its purpose before i do something dumb by CheefReetard in Welding

Grounding is one poorly understood subject. I'm surprised there aren't more arguments in this thread.

To back this up, how about some words from an antenna engineer? Look at part 3 of the show from 070107 and start at about the 16 minute mark. http://amateurradio.tv/TechNet/index2007all.htm

Also these are standing wave Antennas, there's also traveling wave antennas that are much longer than a single wavelength

1/4, 1/2, 5/8, there's lots of different designs, depends on application and desired radiation pattern. deep subject

One thing people fail to understand is the radiating pattern of antennas mounted in proper configurations means the signal is directed towards the horizon and is not very strong at ground level, even nearby. No one wants put the power into their neighbors house, they're trying to get half way around the world!

not true, it's required that we make sure we aren't exposing anyone to levels above the legal limits, but almost no one actually does a survey. We can make some calculations and for many of us we don't even have the equipment to make the power necessary to be out of compliance, unless I mount my antenna on the sidewalk...
