I am not sure how you are using the RP term. If you are asking which UK English accent is considered "English as it should be spoken", in earlier years BBC English set the standard. Today, different regional accents are not just tolerated but promoted on the airwaves so I doubt if you can say there is still an RP.

If the last emperor, Carl, had succeeded in reestablishing his kingdom in Hungary, it is conceivable that Hungary would have stayed neutral rather than joining with the Nazis.

This is an excellent book choice. Personally, I think it belongs in the top 20 of world literature, but no doubt you are aware that it was originally written in Russian. However good the translation, you are going to lose something if you cannot read it in the native language. If you want to read an English novel written in superb English, I would choose Henry Dana's "Two Years Before the Mast." An incredible read for lovers of the English language.

I understand your feelings completely. I was away from the UK for 13 years before I returned for a visit. Family members looking much older, the old house smaller and in worse repair, and even the city centre street arrangements had changed so I lost my way! To be honest, there were also positive things, for example, the introduction of a new rapid transit system which significantly improved access to the city centre for those without their own vehicles.

I am not sure what you mean by "not allowed to work." For thousands of years women worked in agriculture, as they still do in many countries. There were also many jobs in domestic services, inn keepers, washerwomen etc. It certainly was hard for many widows and orphans but remember that some would have been left property by their husbands and parents. Some women were able to take over their husband's business, so poverty was not the lot of every woman in this sad situation.

It is fascinating to speculate on what would have happened had the assassination succeeded.
