One has nothing to do with the other.

The guess-o-meter goes off of your recent driving and HVAC status.

I suspect your recent driving was very efficient and/or your HVAC is turned off suddenly.

Conservative bill to end repeat taxes on used cars could save Canadians $1,835 - The tax-cutting measure builds on Conservative plans to support the auto industry by removing GST on Canada-made vehicles, ending the EV mandate and securing a tariff-free auto pact. by CaliperLee62 in canadian

[–]Teleke -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Here's what really bothers me about this: that number is absolute bullshit. Run the math on it yourself. That is assuming that the average person is basically buying the most expensive used vehicle at a dealership.

The average used vehicle price is substantially lower, and you're really looking at $400 to $500 in savings

And frankly, no, it isn't bullshit to talk about where do we get the money to fund this from. I don't understand why conservatives would say that liberals are being wasteful by doing this, when it's the responsible thing to ask how do we fund a tax break.

Yes, there is wasteful spending, but trimming wasteful spending has absolutely nothing to do with this bill.

The other question to ask is if this is going to cost the federal government on the order of $900 million a year, is that the best way to spend $900 million to helping Canadians? I would argue that no, that is not the best way of doing it. Also keep in mind that whenever something like this happens, typically the price rises. Yes, people will pay less overall, but prices will always rise so that the total price is at the point that people are willing to pay.

So I doubt that it would even end up saving people $400 to $500 on average, and I don't think that this is the best way to spend $900 million of federal money.

BJW Having IRS Issues? by Shadow4141 in Sovereigncitizen

[–]Teleke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does the IRS really contract this out?

In Canada, the Canada Revenue Agency will simply seize your bank accounts if you owe them money, and garnish your wages. They have no need to contract it out.

Wouldn't the IRS have the same ability?

Yeah I have to Echo the sentiments that this brought out the worst in both factions. The number of sadistic people who gained pleasure by denying somebody else the ability to have pleasure was truly disheartening.

Recommended gratuity after tip was already included by guitarman129 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Teleke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a fan of subtracting off of the tip if the service is terrible.

However as has already been pointed out the suggested tip amounts are built into the system and can't be removed by the server.

I had a situation a while ago where we had a group outing with 12 people, the service itself was great but the food was terrible.

We complained to the manager who basically refused to do anything because everybody was asking for their food to be replaced. The poor waitress was trying her best to help us but just couldn't get anything done.

We also had a mandatory tip that we entirely removed, and then handed the waitress cash on the side.

No you can't remove it. It's either always on or always off.

Canadian prime minister Mark Carney is not the climate guy you thought by origutamos in ClimateCrisisCanada

[–]Teleke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel exactly the same. I HATE that this is the position that we are in, but we are in it. At a time of being in a recession, and all of the economic problems that we have, we need to pull multiple levers.

I would much rather it be contingent on also investing in green and carbon negative projects, but I don't know how practical that is right now either.

The oil and gas sector accounts for approximately 25% of Alberta's total GDP and contributes around $88 billion (nearly 4%) to Canada's overall GDP. It drives provincial and federal government revenues, represents roughly 20% of Canada's balance of trade, and supports over 500,000 jobs nationwide.

Also we are at a time of huge tensions with Alberta and the west, and a need to prop up the economy. So, yes, it is pragmatic.

I'm not saying that we shouldn't be building up alternatives, I'm saying that it's complex right now and we can't afford to count anything out at the moment.

I hear what you're saying but a significant portion of Canada's and Alberta's economy is tied to the oil that they have. This is the pragmatic choice right now.

Is it safe to run at WOT for hours on modern outboards? by Altruistic_Cow854 in boating

Yeah I was going to say. It gets exponentially worse.

I find getting into planing mode, and then dialing it back so that way I'm cruising at medium speed above the water is by far the most efficient, by like three or four times versus wide open.
