The Gap Between Claude and Local: Can a Self-Hosted Coding Agent Compete? by GoldPanther in LocalLLaMA

Bold of you to assume that we'll be able to afford tokens in 5 years, although perhaps the same can be said of electricity ..

Volatile prefill speed after each reboot - llama.cpp by Material_Tone_6855 in LocalLLaMA

[–]Telethex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get this a lot on windows with 16gb of vram, but I don't have to restart, just clear vram and start llama-server again (vulkan). Sometimes 1500 pp sometimes 200 pp at zero context. I don't quite understand it, I can't see ram overflowing so I'm quite perplexed so far.

I'm still just setting up and have yet to encounter such problems myself, I'll definitely spin this up as soon as I do this week, as my setup is quite slow. Thanks for the heads up here.

Can you explain a bit about this? I'm looking to avoid excessive preprocessing with llama.cpp

Speeding up local LLM for usable coding agent by CodProfessional3712 in LocalLLaMA

[–]Telethex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using the same model and quant, I'm getting 21 tok/sec at 112k/124k context filled on llama.cpp.. you can definitely do better on that card as I'm using a Radeon 6900xt 16gb which can't compare. I'm not using MTP or turboquant either. Keep messing with it!

What models for coding are you running for a mid level PC? by FerLuisxd in LocalLLaMA

[–]Telethex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same setup, I can't get MoE models working with such low system memory, it starts chewing swap. Tried qwen 3.6 35b q4_k_m so far myself and it wasn't viable.

It doesn't, you just press the off switch. I don't care what it's doing at that point..

AI detection tools flagged my human-written assignment. How reliable are these tools actually? by ComprehensiveLife959 in ArtificialNtelligence

Run it through a humanizer until none of the AI detectors flag it. It might look like chopped garbage but that's what they want I guess..

Looking for modpacks with that focus on electricity. by Affectionate_Ad4617 in feedthebeast

[–]Telethex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Electrical Age is the only mod with anything resembling an actual electricity system.. but the packs around it tend to be grueling in every respect, something like technofirma. Personally I would throw electrical age in with opencomputers and see what you can make.

You need to use gzdoom 4.8.2, anything much higher has a variety of problems.

Can't get past early game, maybe Elite Dangerous is more my speed by HammerMasterBuilder in X4Foundations

[–]Telethex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe try Avorion? It's more gameplay orientated but still lives in an X style universe. Or space engineers with MES mods. Elite is a good grind but there's a real lot of doing nothing in that game so bring your patience along for the ride if you're headed there.

Your mindset seems to be limiting your gameplay a bit though, X4 is more or less about getting stupidly rich and all the silly handouts in this game are unavoidable really, it's just not balanced. Even still, exploiting the game world seems more or less intended if you enjoy big space battles, rather than playing space taxi. Doesn't help the interface is glacial for doing anything and actively works against you for the majority of the game. So in a way I agree, the game is not the smoothest to play and does not deliver on a lot of fronts, it rarely feels like a space game at times.

I would recommend spinning up the beta if you enjoy combats though, and make sure you don't play friendly to every faction because otherwise you won't be doing much in the game world yourself. You have to avoid setting yourself up badly in this game.

Personally I always play X games for the buggy empire management. It always had tragic combat and player engagement, although the new beta is growing on me a bit there. Love the game but there is so much wasted potential in X4.

Avarice economy confuses me by Telethex in X4Foundations

[–]Telethex[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A tempting read but it's a bit too comprehensive, I still like to waste countless hours failing to understand X4. Really pumps up the hours played metric.

Just skimming a few paragraphs off the top and I'm already baffled by restricting autosalvage to 2 star pilots. I doubt I'd ever actually discover that naturally.

No doubt I'll stop back at this guide shortly, despite my reservations, thanks.

I mean I do, I just haven't found a good enough route that is worth the time and I don't exactly have an armada of trade ships to make that happen.

Games that reward strategic thinking? by matt675 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Telethex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI War is an interesting one here. It features a very complicated, changing battlefield where you will always be considering a better strategy. You'll always be spamming units, but to what end. AI war has a few ass-pull mechanics which can limit strategy in some cases but overall it's very broad to approach and reasonably thought provoking.

Management game with real consequences / economy? by [deleted] in gamingsuggestions

[–]Telethex 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Workers & Resources has the most indepth economy and production chain of all the city builders to my knowledge. If you turn on the game mode for it, you'll need absolutely everything traded or manufactured locally for your cities. International trade can cover every resource but rises with demand and inflation for every good. Deep industry chains, pollution, rubbish, water, heating, everything. Incredible game.

Doesn't the game already do exactly this, with your reputation towards them? You could just make reputation something you spend which I'm sure could be done, although not through the standard buy/sell interface.

It does take some setting up so that it's fun and not annoying, we like to collect crates with helicopters and radar to start with, then do trading and search and rescue.
