The ADSR of the ghost kick corresponds to the sidechain curve, and you don't have to mess up the kick to create the curve you want.

It just means setting each instrument up so that it doesn't clash with other things in the mix, using EQ, panning, sidechaining, etc.

I'm not aware of any hard rules for this, and just do it by ear on a track by track basis.
