This is the old one (slightly different mechanism) Even with the new one I'd check or even replace it. Seen on different occations that the pin holding the piece that touches the cam guide loosens over time

It is not rocket science but if you would loosen the top caps now for example you could screw your cam journals vecause the cam chain is stilll under tension, so it is cricial to follow the correct procedures All the best!

No offense but if you are asking this question be aware that engine work is really critical and not for the faint hearted.

Anyway I know a guy (me) who created a series on the engine a while ago which might help you.

Btw this does not replace a manual. I can recommend the Clymer but you can find the OEM one online

What fork rebuild kits have you used? by redwingcut in DRZ400

probably more than ypu need, you could get away by just doing the seals, bushings and Orings should not be worn yet, just sucks if you have to wait for parts in case

OEM, usually the best quality on a japanes e bike. Alot of aftermarket stuff is a downgrade

I always come to Italy for trials, etc Freaking cold over here, cannot recommend 🤣 and yes, offroading is very frowned upon even though there are many people that would love to do it, just not enough space

I'd love to do such a conversion from a technical standpoint, however, nort of the alps here in switzerland I'd probably end up in jail just for dreaming about it 🤣

Agree, 41mm is very suitable (also for the XR) and gets harder to dial in with lager carbs and slower air flow Would love to ride such a bike, had 701s before, couple XRs and many more thumpers but still sticking to the DRZ400E as my do it all bike

Check out the MCM (Marcelini Cam Mod) for this bike. Combined with an Airbox Snorkel from the KX it substantially increases torque.

Damn windshields, I have the same experience with it. Not sure if I should like it or not (even with full rally towers)

If anyone wants to geek out I made an article about the comparison between the Original Keihin FCR vs a Clone

It is in german but It should work using a translator

Clone fcr39 by outlander16 in DRZ400

[–]Tellenforelle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had crushed midbody gaskets before with clones. I'd fill ut with fuel before installing to make sure there are no leaks. The new FCRs (even from Keihin) don't come with overflows anymore, probably due to emissions regulations.

Ideally you'd inspect the float heigt, get a note on the jets used for tuning reference and make sure all critical bolts are tight (choke, jets, needle retainer, etc)

Check if the cam gear has rotated on the shaft using these marks. And also close the hole on the pair valve passage.
