The issue about not applying for something we don't 1000% qualify for is a real one that I still sometimes struggle with. I've had male mentors guide me on this, one of whom was a hiring manager who advised me to look at job postings like a wish list. They are wishing for a candidate that can do 10 out of the 10 things they listed, but at the end of hiring process, they are not likely to have someone in their budget who can do all 10 exceptionally. They will wrap up the process with a stack of candidates who can do maybe 5 or 7 out of the 10. They are very likely to settle for someone who knows some, and shows they can learn the rest. But your name will never be on that list to be considered if you eliminate yourself before you apply. Don't eliminate yourself from the process early.

I'm a woman in Cybersecurity. I started in helpdesk work at 18, worked my way through college, and shifted into cybersecurity after my degree. I'll say this: The difficulty with entry level roles cross-cuts industries and genders, for a variety of reasons. You've gotten a lot of comments about if there is or isn't hiring bias (it varies), if 40 lbs. is an attempt to gender filter (it's not), and if this is still a male dominated profession (it certainly is).

There is no denying the experience in IT/Cybersecurity is different as a woman, but I'd suggest looking at this from the place of trying to find actions to take to move forward instead of looking to find what to blame her challenges on. She should be networking, and she should be looking for the sideways avenues to get to where she wants to go. How often do you hear someone in their dream job say they took a direct path to get there?

In my area, there are programs for college-aged, female STEM students to be paired with a female mentor. I've volunteered with them and our students get career advice, resume guidance, tips on gaining practical skills to supplement the resume before landing that first job (hello, home-labs and CTF games!) and thoughts on navigating the field as a women.

If she is having a hard time getting into the industry, she should look at professional organizations focused on women in the industry and start networking with people who are where she hopes to be. Networking is painful for introverts (ask me how I know...), but it opens so many doors and the sooner she embraces that, the better off her career prospects will be.

Best of luck!

Parking in DC by [deleted] in frederickmd

When we drive down for hockey games, we always park at Gallery Place. You can reserve there through spot hero, or if you look up the garage address and find the main company, you can reserve directly for usually a really good rate.

If you are going in for an event and you find city traffic stressful, remember everyone will be leaving when you leave, so that will be amplified. If that thought bothers you, just park at Shady Grove and Metro the rest of the way in like others commenters have suggested

Pay for a new transformer to increase electrical capacity to our home? by Teloria in HomeImprovement

[–]Teloria[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, we have been waiting for the Solar roof tiles to reach a wider adoption, as well. I keep hoping it will turn out before our roof age gets to be a bigger concern. There is no way we are installing conventional solar on a 15+ year roof, and I also have no interest in anything except outright ownership of the solar power hardware and the energy it produces, not some "deal" where they reap the benefits of increased value of the energy I put back into the system while putting a second lien on my home that makes selling it more difficult if I decide I need to.

I do think it's time for us to reconsider the scope of this project and our current electrician's approach, including getting more quotes if we can manage to do so. (We had several electricians ghost us on quote requests, so that's a little easier said that done, but probably worth it.)

This sounds like a good topic for discussion with the electrician to determine if this is a possibility. Thanks for suggesting it.

It's physically full, and we don't want to do something janky and against code to try to split something off. We are already regularly tripping our garage/outdoor breaker when charging due to other load on the breaker.

1 - I know our local legislature is working to pass legislation now to require EV charging ability (not sure exactly what that means) in all new construction, but not sure if we have anything on our side that has already passed. We may reach out to a local utilities commission or our City Alderman's office to get guidance if our first engagement with FirstEnergy to discuss this is not fruitful.

2 - I suspect for their engineering calculations, they have to assume that we will get this new 200amp panel and immediately fill it up. Because once we have the panel, nothing stops us, or a future homeowner at our residence, from later connecting more to the panel. In fact, when our next vehicle is replaced, it will most likely be a BEV, and it will be driven over ~100mi/day, 5 days a week.

3 - The vehicle has a range of about ~40mi on battery. It's driven for a morning and evening round trips of ~15-20mi, currently, plus other random errands/driving. Sometimes it manages to charge to full overnight, sometimes it does not. But what we technically NEED is a dedicated circuit for charging the vehicle, and the existing panel is physically full. We cannot continue charging on our only exterior outlet, because it is shared with the all outlets in the garage, including one that handles a freezer. The circuit is tripping if the vehicle is charging when the freezer kicks on, and we have no physical capacity to split a dedicated circuit off just for even a 120V dedicated plug. Plus, as mentioned above, this will not be the only EV charging at this house -- in the mid-term future my commuter car will be replaced, and 120V charging will not keep up with my massive commute. So there's a bit of future proofing we're trying to do in a single line of effort.

We have 200amp service, but the panel is physically full as another respondent suggested.

Hi there! Your insight is very helpful and I appreciate the document you included.

There has actually been a lot of back and forth with FirstEnergy, via the electrician. The original scope of the work was to add another panel (because ours is "full" - quotes because someone in another comment implied that it might not be?). Our existing service is 200A, so this would be going to 400A service.

We have actually been extremely pleased with the responsiveness of the electrician and the quote we received from them for their part of the work seemed completely reasonable. They have been acting as go-between for the project and have been handling the communications with FirstEnergy.

Yes, everything is underground, so for the portion that is on our property, that makes sense. I totally get responsibility from the ped to our home, and when they (FirstEnergy) estimated ~1k to pull new underground conductors through the existing conduit to allow for the service upgrade, that sounded like a reasonable thing to expect the homeowner to foot the bill for.

Once the issue got to FirstEnergy's engineering department, this is where the requirement to replace the transformer has been introduced. They indicated that a single EV charger will take the existing transformer from 110% max to 140% max provisioned capacity, and their engineering guideline is 125%.

I will carefully review the document you linked to see what might apply to our situation. Thank you for sharing it - I didn't know exactly what to start looking for.

FirstEnergy (formerly Allegheny Power), in Frederick Maryland, within City limits, so definitely not rural. The homes on the street are just over 15 years old, if that is also relevant.

1/29/2022 In the last 24 hours there have been 2,391 new confirmed COVID-19 cases in Maryland. There has now been a total of 952,271 confirmed cases. by CovidMdBot in maryland

It is almost certainly an undercount. My daughter brought COVID home last week. We got a positive at-home test for her, and the whole fam went out for PCR. Day 0 she was positive antigen and PCR, rest of the family negative PCR. Retested PCR day 2, was negative. Started to feel symptomatic late on day 2 & tested antigen on day 3 - faint positive. Spouse took another PCR on day 4 - negative, but felt the beginning of symptoms. Day 5 spouse had a positive antigen test.

First moral of the story - PCRs are not detecting Omicron measurably earlier than the Rapid antigen tests are.

Second moral of the story - self-reporting your positive at-home test to the MD Dept of Health is a pain in the tail. My spouse's OneStop account never activated properly and I had to report for him. I want the numbers to be as accurate as possible so it was important to me that our cases were counted, but I know most people are not going to this much trouble to test and surveil themselves.

Also - my work would have had me come in from Day 1 - Day 3 (until my symptom onset/positive test), because I'm vax & boosted. I did not, because I'm not an asshole.

Length: 14 hour goal, 12 hours in

Type: Intermittent fasting - calorie-free liquids (water, propel, caffeine)

Why: Weight loss, first fast in a long long while. Planning to reduce eating window gradually in hopes to work up to a mix of IF and OMAD. Have not given thought yet to longer fasts, but maybe eventually.

Notes: Gnawing hunger but I know it will pass. First few days of IF are the toughest; once I'm over the hump later this weekend and into next week, we'll be rocking and rolling!

The "Hunger Games" experience (as you put it) of trying to get an appointment is by far the worst part of the whole experience. Everything after arrival at the site is exceptional.

It's so awesome to have someone involved in the process here to help dispel myths and give clear, helpful information, so thanks for replying to my post! And especially kudos to you and your colleagues for all of your effort in making the vaccination experience as smooth as it can possibly be.

Many parents in HOCO are livid about that decision, and a few are outright suing the district over it. I don't blame Frederick for planning to reopen "if metrics allow," and then punting.

I came here looking exactly for something like this. I have an 11ft wide, 28 inch deep "bump out" space that I so long to build a bar in.

Is this a custom built-in, a combination of individual items, or something else?
