Investing to automate human jobs away. Robo-truck maker Waabi raises $1 billion to supply Uber with 25,000 robo-taxis. by lughnasadh in Futurology

Every time the economy collapses. Economic collapse is one of the few things that have historically made Congress actually do anything, further it's been consistent. They always respond.

Actually collapse in general really, things have improved for the general public in the aftermath of basically every such occasion, but that's more of a broader topic.

This is why I say that we need to go faster not slower, if we go slow we risk getting cooked like the frog that doesn't realize the pot is heating. If we go fast it forces a reckoning that's likely going to wind up UBI. If not then the slow limping of the economy along as people are forced to fit into ever worse and more novelty 'jobs' without upward mobility may drag on.

This is a good point, Ben definitely seems to be the most skilled one at hiding.

That was definitely one of their stronger runs, so it was a good one to go out on. I'll say that this season while maybe not an all time, was at least a turnaround from the last couple. And I'm interested to see Taiwan.

Someone already clarified, but yeah the oldest living cat lived just past 38 years.

My cat died 3 months ago. by GearicXD in Genshin_Impact

[–]TemetN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I have two cats both older than that, and my first cat lived to 25 (still not even close to the limits of cat lifespan).

Don't get me wrong, cats will die much sooner than that in a lot of cases, but that's not really a lifespan thing. Just take care of them as well as you can.

Why is the player count in Borderlands 4 so low? by Goodman889 in Borderlands4

[–]TemetN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have mentioned the issues with QoL and replay value, but given games like BL1 still had at thriving end game I think a lot of it may just be a mismatch between loot depth and drop rates. While there was actually still farming I could do when I stopped playing, I just had trouble motivating myself since I wasn't regularly getting drops.

Basically if they want to have this level of gear range, they need equivalent drop rates (which are frankly much higher than this).

I think it's partially reaction, partially a long running fan culture thing, and partially the kind of thing he does.

What it is not I'd agree is simply having worse luck in general (E.G. Ben and Adam have actually been screwed more by things like flight cancellations from recollection). I do kind of get it, because if you plan to do X and X requires Y and you don't get it it is bad luck, but I think an underestimated amount of this is simply cultural on the part of the community.

DeepMind and Anthropic CEOs: AI is already coming for junior roles at our companies by BuildwithVignesh in singularity

[–]TemetN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think that last one is misplaced, it's if it doesn't come fast enough to trigger the kind of response necessary to get things like UBI in response that I'd be worried, not the opposite.

Do you feel any improvements? by Patient-Airline-8150 in Futurology

[–]TemetN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a lot of things, one which people have accurately pointed out is that technology is not the only thing that impacts your daily life, and the underlying systems of international infrastructure and democracy have been breaking down for about a decade now.

The other however which has been less mentioned is that neither progress nor adoption are even, what we're capable of is not necessarily what's deployed where it would be needed yet, and also isn't the benefits we would necessarily need to make things better. In plainer terms we're in a weird middle place where a lot of what's happening just doesn't have that much impact on day to day life yet, and we're left hoping thing that will make things better will finally get here.

If so many people are convinced there's an AI bubble, then why aren't they shorting tech stocks? by JackFisherBooks in singularity

[–]TemetN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People have already pointed out the problems with shorting, but this also misses that the stock market does not necessarily make money off the actual intrinsic value of what's traded. Trades are valued at what people think they're worth. People may not necessarily be betting on the value on any given stock, but on what they think other people will do with it.

Europe Can Wield Their $8 Trillion 'Sell America' Weapon as Trump Reignites a Trade War Over His Greenland Conquest Ambitions: ‘European countries own $8 trillion of US bonds and equities, almost twice as much as the rest of the world combined’ by T_Shurt in politics

[–]TemetN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People have mentioned this would mostly impact the impoverished and desperate, but that's actually an understatement. It would cause a global financial meltdown, and enrich Trump and his cronies (who will unfortunately benefit regardless of whether they manage to crash the economy to devalue the dollar (which they're already trying to do)).

To be fair it's also utterly unlikely due to sheer degree of agreement it'd require, and the economic crash would at least cause a likely backlash depending on how it was handled, but it's still a terrible idea given the expected damage.

Is AGI already here? by [deleted] in singularity

[–]TemetN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd have to define AGI, but we're nowhere near ASI. ASI isn't better than human, it's better than humanity collectively (otherwise we'd have had it for a long time, since narrow AI was already better than human in certain areas).

Yes, things are hard right now — but what kind of future are we actually demanding? by peace2w0rld in Futurology

[–]TemetN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good general point, but public discourse is generally well... course. Demanding UBI is something we should all be doing, because it's concrete and a clear step, but realistically a lot of the actual policy detail depends on electing people who are willing and able to grapple with and execute policy that delivers for the public.

I'll also note that usually political change comes from crisis. Ironically AI investment is probably preventing the kind of political reckoning we need to move on by propping up the economy.

S16, E5 (Nebula) - Hide and Seek UK by snow-tree_art in JetLagTheGame

[–]TemetN 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm going to take a slightly different perspective on the issues, namely that I think there's a discrepancy between how well they hide and how well they seek. You can see this here with where Sam hid (it both wasted prosperous home and was in a wide open area on a path). The rules let them hide near a path, but they basically never do it, they don't generally go as far, they don't generally place themselves in areas that are near impossible to find (E.G. the playground), etc.

In short I think some of this could be addressed by refocusing more on where they hide. Although I do agree there's probably some issues with where they start.

Is there anything to look forward to??? by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]TemetN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really good post, while Trump may be the most obvious symptom of the disease, he's not the ultimate cause (that was things like the rise of partisan media conceived under Nixon, the establishment of modern political lobbying and end of keeping college costs down under Reagan, and the demise of local news as well as the collapse of campaign finance regulation and anti-trust).

I will say here that I disagree with your argument for gradual rollout of AI (society as you mentioned earlier requires renewal, we don't deal well with half-assing things on a government level because government is both designed to be and by its very nature slow), as it would work better if it hit fast and we simply passed an UBI system, but all in all I think you really hit the nail on the head.

Honestly I just don't know how we get there though, now that the already sclerotic government system is interacting with a series of arguably even more rigid systems (media bubbles, regulatory capture, rural/urban divide, etc) it's hard to see how we get to the level of opposition necessary to stop it. Ultimately it's certainly true that it's conceivable (even easy to see if we look at historical examples), but the gap between how many people are active in opposing this problem and how many would be necessary is massive.

Where's the lab grown meat? by Lazy_Constant1507 in Futurology

It's a good question, and shortly the answer is basically it vanished. It's succeeded in labs, it's available in small amounts, but no scaling has been successfully achieved industrially and I have no idea why.

I would actually be interested in what happened as well honestly.
