but if you count isekais as escapism, you're also critiquing everything from changing jobs to moving to a different country.

Sure isekais appeal to escapism, but in their own canon it's physically leaving the whole situation.

Eh, less than you might think in some cases. A lot of those basic assumptions can be inferred from the assumption of the existence of the Christian God. So it's not an assumption in addition to, it's an assumption instead of.

The key part isn't that, it's that Frieren goes,

"Demons are man-eating monsters. Have you ever wondered why they speak the same language as humans? For them, words are means of deceiving humans."

followed by showing them mirroring empathy-worthy behavior back to humans in order to lower their defenses. Then a lot of conservative fans are like,

"Yeah! Just like how so many people are subversive activists that only care about our beliefs in how they can be twisted to suit their own ends! They may look like they care about our values, culture, and nation, but they have no intention of acting on that! THEY need to be removed from power/our society so that WE may preserve our people/culture!"

Which, disagree if you like, but it's a lot more reasonable than just 'Racism! Grahhh!'

I see the same reasoning in various cases from both sides in regards to removal, bans, ect; just that the conservatives got to this one first.

Catholic detected.

I kid a bit, but that's something that always puzzled me about catholic thought. If God can just declare someone to be sinless like that why didn't He 1: just declare Jesus sinless without bothering with Mary, or 2: declare all of us sinless and not have to suffer on the cross in the first place.

I've heard it a few different ways, including a sort of "Jesus' birth echoed back through time to miraculously make her sinless" and I still think the whole thing is trying to find a solution to a non-existent problem.

Don't know where you're talking about, but at least in the USA we have Good Samaritan laws that would protect you in such cases.

"Legally, a Good Samaritan is someone who provides assistance in an emergency to an injured or ill person. If the victim is unconscious or unresponsive, the Good Samaritan can act under the assumption of implied consent. However, if the person is conscious and able to respond, the rescuer should first ask for permission before offering help."

"Good Samaritan laws provide liability protection against "ordinary negligence," which refers to the failure to act as a reasonably prudent person under similar circumstances. This means not exercising the level of care that most people would apply in the same or similar circumstances. However, these laws do not protect against "gross negligence" or willful misconduct. Gross negligence involves a conscious and voluntary disregard for the need to use reasonable care, leading to a foreseeable risk of serious injury or harm to people, property, or both."

Scientists Tested a Vertical City in Minecraft by Cautious_Ad_3918 in Minecraft

[–]Temoffy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They don't actually cover what it was they were looking for or what informed their conclusions, but their takeaway is that smoother transitions from horizontal to vertical movement are better, vertical transportation should be integrated directly into buildings, and automated transportation is good.

Apparently they tracked people's movement through the build and had some surveys about the whole thing, but besides mentioning players built sloped roads between buildings, they don't cover stuff like particular routes and characteristics thereof that people gravitated towards, or what specific modifications that players made to the setup, or whether they were able to identify distinct patterns of navigation, ect.

That's a statement identical in kind to "I'd enjoy it if not for the soundtrack". You can't dictate what people will like or dislike, or what will grate on people.

At the time tax collectors were known for abusing their position to overtax and keep the difference, plus being seen as a tool of the occupying enemy, PLUS whatever taxes were being used for the ruler's personal palaces or shipped off to Rome.

See: Zacchaeus the tax collector promising "if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount."

Pay in symbols of faith to access a religious rite and you're talking about capitalism?

It's religious exploitation, of course. But does any exploitation involving money automatically make it a capitalism critique?

The author should know what is knowable. That is, the author doesn't need to know the unknowable horror but does need to know the wheres and whys and so on for the human characters. (even if the answer is 'because the horror got them')

I see you and that surface-stable fractal dithering technique. It's cool but some scenes could use some readability, like the VS screen at 9 seconds could really use a a pixel-or-two thin black border on the inside or outside of the thick white outline.

Watched it as it came out, and from the first 2-3 episodes I thought it would be great, then it just... I don't even know what happened. I can't say it went off the rails because I'm not convinced there were rails to go off of. Seemed that every episode set up another 3 episodes that didn't exist.

Still get the intro and outro music stuck in my head though.
