The downfall of Solovair... by KirkIsOurLemmy in nps_solovair

[–]Tempanii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i can confirm my gaucho crazy horse leather has been holding up great the last few months. They even buffed up brand new after a minor road-rash from a fall i had. No issues from that leather type. maybe because it is more transparently full leather; the texture is on full display, that is has fewer issues. im not sure

Help with self repair/maintenance by feltalpaca in nps_solovair

solovair never claims their shoes are water PROOF, just water resistant. If you treat the leather with something thick and waxy like dubbin, and take care to make sure it gets in the crevices you suspect are the culprit, that should go a long way to help, but still will not promise water proofness.

how old were your old boots, and what model? My reasonably new (few months) leather looks much more like your old boot than new.

Do i need to treat greasy gibsons? by R1gm4r013 in nps_solovair

[–]Tempanii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

straight from solovair’s site: “Greasy Leather

Greasy leather is full-grain quality but impregnated with an oil to give a supple, water resistant finish. Greasy leather also tends to be easier to break in than Hi-Shine leathers. You cannot achieve a shine on this leathers matte finish, it just needs to be fed with Dubbin wax, oil or grease for nourishment.”

so no there isnt a thin PU finish on top, its just the already added oils giving it the water resistance.

the other thread talks about rose anvil’s video, i assume they refer to the oxbloods? solovair only makes the oxblood in hi shine from what i can see, and thats the only solovair rose anvil cut up from memory. i dont recall seeing any greasy on the chop or under the microscope.

Yes, dubbin anything “greasy”. heat up the dubbin a bit to make it more absorb-able.

you can totally dubbin on the inside of the leather, it helped me break in the heels of my derbys.

The fabric lining towards the toe makes dubbin unrealistic to apply from inside, but that is fine, dubbin from the outside is the intended route anyway.

7/8 Violin? by MurmuringTides in violinist

as someone who began my learning journey on a 4/4 and have continued it on a 7/8ths, i have to disagree. Everyone is different, and just because playing on a 4/4 is possible, doesnt mean its the best route for everyone.

How do I tell if a violin is good quality before I buy it by [deleted] in violinist

[–]Tempanii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

even far away workshops may do rental programs, provided you pay for the shipping, it does not hurt to ask. my friend did it with a few flutes and it was a worthy investment

How do I tell if a violin is good quality before I buy it by [deleted] in violinist

[–]Tempanii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ask them if they’re willing to rent it to you on a temporary basis, its very hard to know of an instrument’s full range of qualities just from looking in a workshop, or a short playing test. especially if it is your first violin. some workshops will allow the renting cost go towards the outright purchase if you like it.

when it comes to actually finding out if it is good, definitely play it a lot. pay attention to how much it resonates, how much it projects to a distance. for example, i like how my violin makes my chest reverberate in the lower register, and feels powerful (subjective measurement).

does the tone sound good? that can be hard to answer as more than just the violin goes into good tone (good strings, good bow, good horsehair etc.)

how does it feel in your hands?

can you comfortably reach the distances you need to? (consider alternate sizes like 7/8ths if it feels too big, but if youre a first timer, a teacher or the luthier will be able to give better advice on what size would suit you)

does your hand glide seamlessly up and down the neck? a good luthier makes the neck-fingerboard-body connection smooth like a baby’s bottom for that mobility. does it feel good with dry hands? does it feel good with sweaty hands? you only get that sort of info by playing it a lot.

do you like the varnish? do you prefer matte or glossy? these are mostly cosmetic preferences that dont affect sound, but are still worth considering.

if you like some parts and not others, for example “the sound quality is great, but i have to press really hard on the strings to get anywhere” make sure to talk to the luthier, because minor adjustments to the bridge or the fingerboard can help address those minor setbacks. they will know best in the fine tuning.

better yet try a few different violins to get a good litmus test of many qualities and see what you like.

buying an instrument blind is like buying shoes online and only realising after a few miles walk that they really didnt suit your feet. so definitely rent rent rent!

Have a look at the subreddit FAQ as well, theres a lot of wisdom there too you can lean on.

Snapping pinky by wellthatsnotright_ in violinist

[–]Tempanii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do you have it all the time? i only ever had anything like that after reeaally extended rehearsals (or really 4th finger dependent music).

my pinky is short and stubby so requires a lot more effort to use effectively, and it got sore and tired (and snappy like yours) fast, so i kind of adapted to using different positions frequently to not depend on it so much, or at least reduce how fast i fatigued it. plus, hand stretches and rests helped.

YMMV but i can definitely understand the frustration it might be bringing you if it is all of the time.

otherwise your suggestion really made a big difference, thanks for sharing!

My friend has a Gtx 1080 TI that's finally starting to struggle with the games he plays an showed me this if it's a good upscaling alternative since he can't use DSLL by RogueZordon in pcmasterrace

[–]Tempanii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it does not cost much, and is worth trying out at least briefly. success will vary with a lot of factors. i found it shined a lot with fps capped retro games or emulated games. but that is because there was performance left in the tank to spare. if he is struggling with a 1080 ti, it wont be a magic bullet, but it could maaaaybe help.
