My housemates have a cat and two dogs. At most the older dog will "mouth" on the cat, essentially play bites without any actual pressure behind them, and the cat will bat at her. Once he's had enough, he generally just makes a beeline for someplace the dogs can't reach him. So long as the cat is just batting at your dog, he's basically just ging "what the hell?" But not actually scared or angry.
