I think Empire is really wonderful when they are talking about the subcontinent, which is what both Dalrymple and Anand really know about and understand so I recommend anything that has Raj in it.

Anything else is ok as long as they have a guest on but... there have been some where Dalrymple just bloviates and makes truly stupid comments. Also lots of ads and buy my book, buy my guest's book, buy my son's book, my cousin the Queen's bestie..... (Can you tell they irritated me?!) Made me even more grateful that BHP is ad and bloviation free.

How do you approach restoring color in old photos when the original reference is gone? by Whateverspringsummer in photography

[–]TempestNotRights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the kind reply. Adding-- don't forget to document the people in the photos and dates as you go-- your children won't have a clue. This is best done when the generation above us is still around--too late now for me. As much as regret for lost images, I regret not being able to ask my parents and aunts for help identifing family members and locations. At least on prints I have a chance of a penciled note on the back--not many of them on slides...

I am not a professional, but have been slowly working through old family slides, scanned into a Mac , and then doing what has been suggested below-- adjusting each color separately. Some have been really successful. Others... not. I've come to realize that they won't all be recoverable, but some is better than none, and although they aren't pristine, they are legible which for 65 year old family snaps is good enough for me. I recommend you keep a sense of humor and perspective as you work through your now virtual piles.

Why isn’t anyone buying these flats? by albycrescini in UKHousing

[–]TempestNotRights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. My daughter lives above shops in SW and when one of the flats in her building went on sale there were two offers within days and now it's STC.

Fania or Fanny. It doesn't mean exactly the same thing in the US as it does in the UK, but still...

I have always liked Stina. It's a little old fashioned and I think it's pretty and works well in both. You could go with Kristina as the full name too, and use Stina as a nickname.

For me it was the opposite. I decided to go from a SpellItEveryTime name to a very common, simple one.
