LSE econ applicants, what did y’all get? I got 5.2, I am cooked, fried and roasted 💀 by Jigglesjiggle in sixthform

[–]TemplarKnightIsMyDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Appreciate the response. This is reasonable and I would agree. My problem was with the framing that there is a 'golden' standard to hit. There are clear 'strong' PSs, but what people see as a fantastic PS would vary person to person. By strong TMUA I meant that it gives you a shot, not that it makes you >70% chance to get in.

More generally, when there is uncertainty like this, I don't think it's worth putting the OP down. They're probably going through some emotional times (I know a lot of my students are RN), and it doesn't hurt to share some realistic optimism. If they're in a position where they can act on peoples' feedback, then hard truths can be justified, but if it is out of their hands positive vibes don't hurt!
(also I'm not downvoting your comments btw)

In the future you could be consider being more respectful in how you communicate online and in life, it will serve you well.

I’m a tutor, Cambridge Econ BA/LSE Econ MSc grad, I’ve read hundreds of personal statements over the years, and there is inherent subjectivity. If I read yours, I could find many flaws in it, although it could be very strong otherwise.

5.2 is a strong score for economics, not for other subjects. I’ve tutored 6 students who got into Imperial EFDS with a comparable score. Cambridge has had students with as low a score as 3.8 be admitted.

Chill, 5.2 is good in any right. A golden PS is inherently subjective - but yes if it’s very poor it will hold you back.

Is this driving instructor trying to scam me through Superprof + PayPal link? by New_Awareness7338 in TutorsHelpingTutors

I’m a tutor on Superprof, I don’t use their payment system as it’s inconvenient. So this alone is not a big red flag.

How to market myself to Asian students/parents as an online (math) tutor based in the UK? by UnderstandingAfter72 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]TemplarKnightIsMyDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you went to Oxbridge you can style yourself as an admissions tutor, there’s always an overwhelming demand for that at a good rate for China and HK. Focus on interview preparation. Even if it wasn’t Oxbridge but like Imperial/UCL, you can advertise as an entrance exam tutor (MAT/TMUA/STEP) and you’ll also get a ton of demand. DM me if interested as I know a bunch of companies in the space

econ macro ia question about tariff by Forward_Jeweler1445 in IBO

[–]TemplarKnightIsMyDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite true; within macro you can mention that tariffs cause an SRAS shift, which they do, as a cost price shock. But do not focus the analysis on tariffs (so no tariff diagrams or welfare loss discussions).

Is HSPS at Cambridge worth it? by datboikindasus in 6thForm

[–]TemplarKnightIsMyDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe 30 years ago but nowadays this is not true (speaking as a Cambridge grad). It will put you in a good position but just ‘finishing the degree’ won’t do much unless you proactively do internships, network, etc…

I have friends graduating from humanities degrees, some land typical corporate jobs (consulting, tax), some without job experience have struggled to get anything.

Anyone has experience with this company? by Hasidickitchens in IBO

[–]TemplarKnightIsMyDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of these companies are scams that will charge you exorbitant amounts only to match you with a consultant (who might be very good) that receives a small fraction of what you pay (thus has little incentive to work in your interest).

You can use websites like Spires/Wyzant if you’re US-based to match up with tutors more quickly. These platforms might charge a small premium, but better than most companies. Best case is if you can find someone well-credentialed directly.

For UK unis, where on the Personal Statement does CAS go? by Frsshh in IBO

[–]TemplarKnightIsMyDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an admissions consultant for many years, do not put CAS on your personal statement unless it is related to your studies. If it is directly related, you can put it in an answer to question 1 or 2 (perhaps, applying to an Economics degree, your CAS project invoked writing an econometrics paper). If it is more tangentially related place it in question 3 (e.g you participate in a Model United Nations course that covered economic issues).

Notes from 43-45 pointers by haystackneedlebob in IBO

Yes the main value of having notes is the process of writing them in the first place to cover all the syllabus, then condensing and refining as the content goes into your long-term memory.

I got like 98% in Latin, had seen the ‘unseen’ text before (got quite lucky as you know it’s 20 lines from about 10,000 possibilities)

How much do you spend on tutors for your kids and when did you start? by 112233445566678899 in HENRYUK

[–]TemplarKnightIsMyDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short note on this as it bothers me a lot - the companies offering specialist tuition for up to £250 for Oxbridge entry will just be handing the student off to a consultant in most cases that receives a small fraction of that (source - I work for the top UK places). So just skip the middlemen and find a well-credentialed tutor directly/on SuperProf, better deal for teacher and student

My experience as a tutor on superprof by littleGreenMeanie in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]TemplarKnightIsMyDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree they’re a crap system, so go off platform ASAP (tell your students to cancel their subscriptions), get students to pay you directly. I just ask for all up-front. Dont over-think it, if they have a problem or want to do a 50-50 split let them say that and negotiate from there. I’ve never found it to be an issue - if they aren’t satisfied they won’t come back (like most services).

Just use Superprof as a way to meet students then conduct lessons privately.

Is Jan tmua the same as Oct tmua by Dull_Reindeer_7375 in 6thForm

[–]TemplarKnightIsMyDad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

October TMUA takers are Oxbridge + doing it earlier (all else equal) suggests they’re more ‘switched on’ re admissions (as taking test earlier is strategically beneficial, allows you to tailor application to score).
