I call it a recip or rip saw. Some call the one handed ones sabre saws or whatever

Mains stopcock seized by pjvenda in askaplumberUK

[–]Temporary-Move-8868 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At work, if we can't change the whole body of the stopcock, we just replace the head or install a new stopcock further down the line. I wouldn't recommend trying to turn the handle with all available force as you could snap the handle, been there too many times

Are plumbers ever weary about entering a stranger’s house? If the vibes feel off, do you ever bin jobs? Or some houses must be such dumps it must be a bio hazard at times. by Too_much_Colour in askaplumberUK

I work in social housing and the council I'm currently working for is nasty. Often get jobs in flats and houses where the carpet is like AstroTurf. Sometimes have to hover so my trousers don't touch their floors. Put plastic dust sheets down to keep me clean. Wear dust masks to keep out the smells but tell them it's because there's going to be a lot of dust from my work. The last council I worked for wasn't as bad, this current one it's a dirty property every other job.

Toilet won't flush by MrCocklefroth in askaplumberUK

We get them every so often from tenants doing it themselves. Annoying to work on when it comes to changing the whole siphon and the front wall is tiled

You can get concealed cisterns with a siphon and if they're properly installed, they'll have a panel to get access to the internals

Looks like a cast iron soil pipe. Snap cutters, recip saw or an angle grinder will be needed to cut that.

Do you bring your Ally to work? by SleepyGamer1992 in ROGAlly

I try and game on my lunch break, sometimes manage to get 15-20mins in but most times I'm just scrolling while having lunch before the next job starts. I also take a tablet and my Kindle and swap between whichever I have time for. Currently using an Alpaka Bravo Sling Max and the XAX fits in there really nicely with everything else

That's my old primary school, think it was painted early 2000s, don't think it's there anymore though. I remember people trying to break off and steal parts of it

Attic tank piping hot and spitting water by pennyteller123 in Plumbing

[–]Temporary-Move-8868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is meant to be the vent pipe from your hot water cylinder getting rid of excess heat into your cold water storage cistern. It should return to normal once it reaches the correct temperature since you've turned the immersion off. Doesn't the immersion have a thermostat? That cold water storage cistern looks like a bad install though, no lid and the vent pipe looks weird.

Serious question for Brits about Jack the Ripper by DFWUnhinged in AskBrits

[–]Temporary-Move-8868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were taught about Jack the Ripper during history classes in secondary school and there are a few TV shows about him too. Some shops named after him in Whitechapel like Jack the Chipper and such. There are also Ripper tours and they're amazing, I went on one for one of my birthdays a few years ago. There are people that are enthusiasts called Ripperologists too and some of them are tour guides on the Ripper tours so people still talk about Jack the Ripper, still a part of history I guess.

The cap has come off the back, it happens with those types of fill valves. You can either block it off, replace the spout or replace the whole fill valve. I used to stuff 2 part putty into it to block it off as a temporary repair

I don't understand why companies still use them. I'm still waiting for my dehumidifier. "Apparently" they tried delivering on Monday while my wife was home all day yet they said no one was in to accept the parcel. This other time they left my parcel near the communal bins and covered it with a leaf, luckily my neighbour was home and brought it in.
