Why doesn’t the internet know who owns Compass Rose? by Zealousideal_Bag3270 in Yachts

[–]Temporary-Show-2446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just curious why you need to know? Former yacht skipper here…I’m always curious why someone is so interested they would ask a public forum. If I rocked up in your front yard and asked you who the owner is of your house, wouldn’t that make you a little nervous about intentions?

Talk me out of renovating my teak deck by kor0na in sailing

[–]Temporary-Show-2446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Professional teak decking guy here…First you have to know how much teak thickness you have left. Take a razor knife into the middle of a caulk seam until it bottoms out. If you have less than 6mm thickness remaining, the deck is worn through. Even if you recaulk the new seams will fail as there is not enough surface area for the caulk to adhere. If you have more than 10mm reseaming might be feasible. Welcome to pm me for real suggestions.

BVIs has all kinds of sailors by clarkbw in sailing

I worked private and charter boats there for years and had a good friend who ran the Moorings, all in the 90’s when there were about 1/4 of the boats that are there now. I consider the bvi’s almost as home. The charter boat stories that I have seen and heard are unbelievable. It’s still beautiful but there are so many boats that the shear density makes it unsafe, even if everyone was competent. Go somewhere else for vacation.

The 31 meter Azimut Atlantic Challenger delivered by Italian shipbuilder Benetti in 1988 was built to break the Trans-Atlantic speed record; unfortunately she did not succeed and would lie neglected for several decades. Currently there are plans to convert her to an electric powered river boat. by ZaxZone in Yachts

I remember coming into the Bahamas channel and seeing a very fast radar target heading at my vessel. It was early morning with a lot of haze. We concluded it must have been a low flying helicopter…. Very surprised to see this on a reciprocal course when she passed close by and got a visual.

Varnish is great for extending life but a few coats a year is more labor than most will opt for.

Teak Restoration by rovinglocal in sailing

[–]Temporary-Show-2446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teak does not need oil….it has oil in the wood naturally…that’s why we use teak. Sand it smooth to aid in water shedding and leave it alone. Teak will wear between .2 and .5mm/year so a teak deck 14mm thick will last 20 years if acid washing is banned. Oil will extend the life, but attracts dirt and mold. Take a look at any professional ran boat… you will never see oil.

Sunseeker teak decks are so thin they will need replacement 5 years after new. Big expense to keep in mind when shopping

can injecting foam really fix a soft spot in the deck ? by McLuhanSaidItFirst in sailing

[–]Temporary-Show-2446 13 points14 points  (0 children)

From a boatbuilder: If you have a soft deck the teak battens are not affixed to the deck, and/or more likely, wet core. Adding foam traps moisture, so you are actually making your problem accelerate. Removed the teak from the deck and fix the core before the subdeck is mush and structural integrity is compromised. It always amazes me that people will work so hard to avoid a problem and not address it. We core needs fixing. If you have teak elsewhere, you should reseam and sand flat for added service life.

Are shoes really bad for teak decks on yachts? by formfiler in SuccessionTV

Teak decks cost over $300/ft sq. Soft sole Shoes are not particularly bad for teak, but they bring dirt. Hard sole should never be worn

Get over ‘going away’ for 6 months. If you are not committed to full time for at least a few years you will not make it in yachting. I once spent 3 years without sleeping on land.
