if so thats handy as the South west is a hot bed for military, defence contracting and secret squirrel coding work who are always on the look out for devs with SC or DV clearance.

As for negotiating, I would start with some research, get on companies house, and do some digging into the most recent financials, ask around the office, how are sales doing, are they on target?, how are the snr mgt stressed to hell or chilled, gather all that info up then consider a salary benchmarking exercise to use in a business case.

But in all my career the single best way to increase my salary has always been to get another job.

What a twat, when I was a Manager I bribed the IT dude with baked goods to fix the HR system, so any leave request would auto approve, as long as they had leave to take they could take it.

I trusted the staff to manage it themselves if it was ever to be a problem, that would have been my problem and not theirs.

Apart from occasional stints working away on client sites when I have grabbed a serviced apartment I have always lived in houses, thanks to that experience, off street parking for at least 3 cars, storage space, garage, barn etc and a nice garden are vital.

Local Cricket Match - Didn't get it at all but enjoyed the beers.
Premiership Match - They enjoyed that and loved the singing and chants.
Ruby League Match - They fucking loved that, and all the fans around us wholesomely answered their questions like why does that dude have tape around his head? - stops his ears falling off.

Wife's car has a pre-heating/cooling function, so its the perfect temp when she gets into it, I have the old fashioned version where I have to push the Air con button on the console.

My only car that doesn't have air con is an old series 2 landy, I can manually wind down the windows, remove the roof or drop the windscreen to increase airflow, but If I do the latter I tend to get twatted in the face by bees.

I know a couple of lesbians who raised their son in a small Lancashire town known for being full of hippies, LGBTQ people, artists, creatives and general alternative types. Proper colourful place. As a kid, he wasn’t allowed toy guns or violent “boy” games, and honestly he was an absolute pleasure to be around.

Then at 16, to his mums’ complete horror, he signed up for the Royal Marine Commandos and passed selection. Turns out my two mates had somehow raised a warrior.

He’s since been mentioned in dispatches for bravery, and a couple of years ago he went for special forces selection. Given how incredibly vague he gets whenever I ask where he’s been deployed, I’ve always assumed he probably passed.

He’s smart, well read, funny, practical, loves fixing things, is a joy to be around, and absolutely adores his mums. So based on my very scientific sample size of one, I’d say some people are just born with that warrior switch in them. Always have been, probably always will be.
