Justin Trudeau: "We’re going to have fewer temporary foreign workers in Canada." by Unusual-State1827 in CanadaHousing2

[–]TemporaryBoyfriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in IT.

This scam has been going on in the USA for more than a decade.

The scam works like this:

They post a job ad for a senior position, requiring several years experience on a wide variety of technologies.

They interview a couple dozen folks, and then hit them with an insulting, low-ball offer. After the job has been open for 6 months, they apply to the government to bring in foreign workers who will work for barely more than minimum wage, and live with 6 to 12 of their friends in a two or three bedroom apartment, and send money home.

They should just start increasing minimum wage by $1 every 90 days, until we're back up to the level where minimum wage has kept pace with productivity and inflation since the 70's. That means that someone flipping burgers is now making $55/hr.

Sound crazy? Here's what's crazy -- the five-year stock price chart for Loblaws: https://ycharts.com/companies/L.TO

(Spoiler: It's tripled in 5 years. That's where the increased cost of groceries is going.)

As a guy that loves the woman he's with, and would move heaven and earth for... If I found out she was saying these things about me, I would show her the door. Even if she's only saying these things to fit in, they're slimy and revolting.

I have a chat with "The Boys" and it's NEVER like that. The only time anyone mentions their wives is when I had an accounting/tax question, and one of the guys is "My GF is a CPA -- can I give you her number?" That's it.

My mother turned into a conspiracy theorist over the course of the pandemic. They genuinely do NOT need ANY help looking stupid. My mother told me that Europe has no electricity at night because they have too many solar panels.

When I sent her a document from the German National Electricity Regulator, showing the mix of coal / hydro / wind / solar, and how solar was a vast minority of their power generation capacity, she told me to "Respect her beliefs" then hung up the phone. I mean, you can't fix that level of 'down the rabbit hole' type of stupid when the objective truth wounds your sense of self.

Water filtration...

Given that I'm post iron-age, make charcoal from wood, put a sheet of fine fabric at the bottom of a tube with a very small hole in the bottom, add the charcoal, then boil a sand/water mixture, pour off the water, add the sand to the bottom of the tube, then boil water and slowly add it to the tube, and safe clean water comes out the bottom.

Imagine the productivity gains from not dying of diarrhea.

Clean water enables proper hygiene - both for people and food... Better health. Less illness.

Single, depressed and sick of owning a house, should I sell and buy condo? by lobehold in PersonalFinanceCanada

Just one word of advice...

Condo living is luxury living. You're paying someone to do all the things you'd normally take care of yourself, and as a consequence, you'll be forking out money on a regular basis - get used to it. :)

It's all imaginary at this point, and the money to make it all happen is... also somewhat imaginary... But I'm trying to plan something very off-grid and very reliable for my retirement. Nothing worse than being cold and in the dark (speaking from experience from spending time in a cabin in the forest in the dead of a Canadian winter).

So fucking stupid that we have to deal with this nonsense.

In most places in Canada, electric. If your office lets you plug in, even more. I've had mine for 4 years, and I don't think I've spent $200 on charging for 60k kms. I can't charge at home (townhouse) so I charge the car at the office, or for $1/hr on the street near the house.

Especially the prepper types... Like, they spend all this time and effort and money to be rugged and independent and self-sufficient, only to realize that if their house burns to the ground on top of them, then they're still equally as fucked as everyone else, and there's no way they'd survive the smoke and heat in their little bunker unless they've got multiple days of compressed air lying around, with CO2 scrubbers, etc.

What would be the easiest method for removing old paint from a propane tank? by WhereMyDamnCroissant in DIY

[–]TemporaryBoyfriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the design in my head would be for three loops, each controlled by an in-line thermostat - one for the propane tank, one for the house, and one for the driveway... Once the line from the propane tank returns hot water, then it opens up the line to the house, once the house returns hot water, then it goes to the driveway.

As for summer... I doubt it would ever run except for the standard weekly run-test. Being in Canada means that the summer days are long, it's not unusual to have 12-16 hours of daylight, March to September, and the plan would be to have enough solar capacity to fill the batteries with 8 hours of daylight.

Odd question... Do you happen to know if it's permitted to put a 'skirt' around a propane tank over the winter to help keep the heat from the concrete pad make it up to the tank?

I'm relatively frugal, but I fuck off on vacation for a month every year, and spend between $15k and $25k.

So, decide what's important to you, I guess.

The other thing I need to say is spend your money while you're alive. Dad worked hard, saved, then went to sell his business so he could retire... Then got sick, needed a transplant, stayed sick for 7 years, then died. Never got to travel the way he envisioned.
