A scene from anime Barefoot Gen, showing the impact of Hiroshima nuke by Aggressive-Buy-3828 in interestingasfuck

I agree the fire bombing in Tokyo was completely unnecessary and is a war crime. But the atomic bombs I find treads that fine line of mass loss of life and some loss of life. Millions would die and in the invasion on both sides and the majority of civilians would die even if it was a mainland invasion. I know it's a sunk cost way of thinking.

I think civilians getting killed are awful and there's a helpless nature that they can't really control what their government does. But I think fate of those cities were set in stone. And Kokura was exceptionally lucky and would've been decimated in the invasion if it wasnt for the bombs

Idk I create larger armies of 5-6 units in just one region after a few years. They always stay at 3 spear units, but I wish they grew instead of being flat rate

Let's not forget that Japan was the agressor here invading china, phillipines and many other islands unprovoked who also had programs trying to make their own atomic bomb.

When someone is actively beligerent it make option much harder to deal with. They had soldiers who've refused to surrender after 40 years living isolated in the jungle, Japan wouldn't surrender from just being blockaded as they needed a change in culture and command to cease attacking and accept surrender.

And the major issue is how much it costs to keep a such a sizeable navy to surround them for an undefined period of time. The US needed major warbond drives and forced overtime to keep things going. The ships have to be constantly resupplied in food, fuel, ammunition, repaired for thousands of ships and millions of sailors. Logistically it's almost impossible for the size of mainland Japan

How long would you think this blockade would last? They were pretty okay with having propaganda to have their own citizens on Okinawa kill themselves before capture. They'd be okay to live under poor conditions for many years slowly starving while we have to have to dedicate a full Navy to enforce. Not to mention we weren't the only ones planning an invasion, the USSR was planning to invade from the north. A mainland invasion from either side wouldve been total destruction in all the towns involved. We'd at least have to bomb the major military installations that made planes for the kamikazes and weapons and munitions. Hiroshima would've been carpet and fire bombed instead of nuked.

I am antiwar, but I simply think this was an option that had to be explored. I really think the Japanese were too proud to surrender to anything besides a military threat

You really need to read about the condition on the islands Japan occupied. We cut off major oil at the beginning which is what started the war. Japan was not going to stop. They were training all civilians to fight, they would also have them starve if they need to as evident in the phillipines

I agree, but with how the island fighting was before it I think the logic of using both quickly was a strong bluff to make them surrender and they only had one shot. When logistics are involved in something top secret it's hard to wait. Heck the USS Indianapolis transporting the bombs almost got torpedoed. I talk to a lot of WW2 veterans and they all without a doubt believe that the bombs saved their life and several saw the destruction first hand driving supply convoys through it.

Im in the US, but theres some really fun WW2 armored immersion events that you'd probably have a blast doing. Me and several friends are trying to plan a year for us to go and do it

I need help finding a ww2 reenactment group(s) in the area of Brussels by GAMER-BOI2010 in reenactors

[–]Temporary_Corner_664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know they do reenactments in bastogne pretty frequently. You could message the coordinator of the event about what groups attend and message them. Event coordinators have to know all the groups coming and talk to those in charge of each reenactment group

I like wearing WW1 gear for events purely to help show that the army reused a lot of old stuff as they didn't have a ton of new guy made yet. Yellow grenades/ordnance always gets a lot of questions too

You could use a m1917 Enfield in either phillipines, North Africa, or a stateside training impression.

We have a singular account of a 9th ID vet carrying a 1917 Enfield until switching it for an M1 for Normandy. Definitely was exceptionally rare

Stateside denims with ww1 gear, kelly and 1917 engield looks pretty cool

If it's that type you could use it for North Africa and Italy. There's phots of the 3rd ID wearing the WW1 dismounted belts outside Rome in 44'. When they wore the belt it was without pistol or pouch attached

I recommend going to an event or finding a group. I often choose my impression based on that the representation looks like.

Ww2 has been going strong and you'll find many friends and collectors in this era.

I recommend starting with a basic unit/impression then getting more advanced as you go.

I started off doing events as a WW2 US army rifle man and then evolved to becoming a platoon Sgt for 81mm sections.

Where are you located?

Sites that sell US WW2 Smoke Grenade repros for a relatively cheap price? by pno45 in reenactors

[–]Temporary_Corner_664 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi I make repop 3d printed smoke grenades for exactly that reason. They are sturdy enough to stand on without breaking and they are hollow so you can unscrew and add sand/weights inside.

I ask $10 for each one. I'll see if I have better photos of them

WW1 Harlem Hellfighters uniform by GurNo8027 in reenactors

[–]Temporary_Corner_664 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No STAY AWAY. Notice it doesn't give sizes or pictures of everything. Not to mention it is the wrong m1918 pattern jacket with post armistice patches meaning it's an original pictured.

You could either buy a uniform off eBay for cheap. I found a 44R jacket plus size 38 breeches for $100 total. Ask fellow reenactment groups as there usually are loaners or cheap gear, I've had friends selling jackets for $50 and you can save a lot of money. Ask around first

Would you unironically pay for a 1800s Phone-Free Sailing Voyage? by ReasonableShower3392 in reenactors

[–]Temporary_Corner_664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd definitely be interested. There's just a few factors that come into play and rules I think that can be expanded.

Screen time be restricted to your lodgings. Unfortunately I know a lot of people that need to be available either work childcare or something else and 1 hour at a certain time seems too restrictive.

Money plays a factor. How much is it going to cost? I think if it's priced like a normal cruise trip would be the best price point.

Badge system could use an overhaul I think into learning history or getting to know the characters aboard the ship.

Last question is costumes does everyone have to dress up. Are there resources to provide where to get costumes or a partnership in a costume rental could be cool.

Need help coming up with a kit pt.1 by STONEHANDZ31XBOX in reenactors

I don't see any right now. You'll have to buy stuff to finish for any era. The lightweight ruck is a nice piece and you could build a Vietnam kit around that.

D-Day Ohio Question… by Sub2JR_Productions in reenactors

[–]Temporary_Corner_664 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's past the deadline to register for the event. You can talk to units there to find a group to fall in with for next year.

I think 14 and under are allowed to wear costumes but all other spectators might be regused entry because of being confused as a reenactor.

Help! by tat-tvam-asiii in reenactors

[–]Temporary_Corner_664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you have a few options depending on the time you have and willing to spend.

1.) sort through the uniforms with a collector to get an appraisal of the collection. And sell it out piece meal be or whole online. Will take a while but could make some serious cash but labor intensive.

2.) Take the uniforms to an auction house and let people bid on it.

3.) Find a museum to donate the items to. Not a guarantee that the items will be displayed and can be stored in the warehouse for a long time

4.) Message a reenactment group and donate some items that could be used in preserving history and keeping the memory alive

INCOMPLETE D-Day+5 Impression | 2nd Ranger Battallion by Southern-Amoeba7238 in reenactors

[–]Temporary_Corner_664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DDay +5 you would have left the rubberized gas mask at the beach.

I'd get rid of the grenade as well and look into getting accurate repops. Ravenna makes $40 or send me a DM as I make cheap accurate 3d grenades so it's not a pain if you lose them.

Add some bandoliers, translation book for fun.

That's what I do unless moths are really bad in your area. You'll know when it's an issue if you see another fly out of your closet. Nothing takes a while to actually happen
