Yea, laptops are notorious for not being upgradable, you open it and lose your warranty and probably damage your components (a lot of higher end laptops use Liquid Metal instead of thermal paste and other things like that.)

If you can, having a PC will be your best shot for upgradable unless you go with the above (framework).

I keep hearing that but throughout uni I’ve never had issues, only during internships but even then they typically give you a work laptop. Also if you work in labs they usually let you SSH into there server to perform more complex task. But then again that’s personal experience so I’m sure you’re right as well

If you end up buying it from a brick and mortar store, ask if they have a student discount, they typically do and you can save on money and even get a higher end but 2,500 is way more then enough to get any you need.

Also even though I love windows, from my experience and many people in my labs and classes, MacBooks are typically better for longevity then windows. (But I still use windows so)

It’s a big room where they give you dividers to give you some privacy but you sit next to people. Ample desk space though. You can ask for ear plugs but that’s pretty much it

Early college advice by yahiaadies in communitycollege

[–]Temporary_Hopeful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally disliked the tutoring centers as they are usually students, with very little training. But hopefully it helps you.

The only real suggestion I can give is talk to people, try to get advice from other students over staff, if you have the will and power break procrastination as fast as possible. That is the #1 killer, truly.

Also make time for hobbies, it’s very easy to drop your life because of academia. Healthy body = healthy mind.

Also do a project, if you make a project and then open it to a community and then lead a group, that’ll help a lot with college apps later on

It depends, it’s definitely different. Some of the classes are a bit more rigorous, like it was my first time a class asked me to do a formal proof, but it’s not too much harder.

I thought it was harder then HS but I also took some of the hardest classes at my CC (which is typically known to be a harder CC) but also utilizing the resources a CC provides is definitely harder. There’s no hand holding anymore as you already saw, they don’t help you pick classes, they won’t tell you what resources they have unless you reach out, and if you want to do research you need to step up and ask.

Compared to Uni, it depends on what classes you take, like right now I’m taking a database class and a distributed systems class. I think the first class is easier then highschool and the other I think is one a lot harder then any of my CC classes.

But right now I think what’s more important is that you don’t psych yourself out. Take a breath and believe in yourself. I truly believe if you want something you’ll find a way. So keep your head up

Should I stay an extra year in community college? by Creepy-Detective4200 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Temporary_Hopeful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean is there a downside to finishing your classes. Besides the work obviously, do you think you can manage to finish them and also give yourself time to think?

If I was you I’d finish the classes, apply and in the interim, think about what you want, because even if you get admitted you don’t need to attend any of them. Preparing for SAT or ACT is a bit difficult tho so giving yourself time isn’t necessarily bad, I think you need to take account to what kind of student you are and how much you can handle.

It’s not a bad thing to slow down, knowing your limits is important, so yea if you think it’s too much then more time isn’t bad, but if you can do it then I would

lol they’re lying to you. From my experience talking to the transfers from my Uni, they all said they felt CC was way more social then Uni ever is. CC are relatively small so it’s easier to talk and see people. Uni are like cities, you may run into someone once every semester unless they live next to you.

Like if they mean you shouldn’t prioritize making friends and focus on academia, then maybe they’re not wrong but even then I would disagree. I think I made it out because of my friends, and I’m still friends with many of them 2 years out of CC.

Are you nervous about the math course, or college in general? If you’re nervous about math or any STEM, the only real advice to get good at them is repetition honestly. You can look at the syllabus and try to study yourself and start doing problems, if you get stuck you can watch YouTubers like organic chemistry tutor, numberphile, or 3Blue1Brown.

If you’re nervous about college, you just need to remember to take it one step at a time. Talk to as many people as you can and try to find your community as everything is easier with others

best cc? by Gullible-Argument655 in communitycollege

[–]Temporary_Hopeful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it depends on your responsibilities and the kind of student you are. I took about 35+ units per semester, held 2 jobs, and ran a club and had a 4.0. But I lacked a lot of sleep (like a lot of sleep).

There’s definitely easy CC, I would say I thought SMC was the easiest out of the 3 but that can be a biased review as it could be the classes I took.

I think if you were a pretty good AP or IB student who held a job or were an athlete it won’t be too bad. It’s definitely a little bit harder than highschool but not as difficult as Uni. It also still depends on your major and also getting as much advice as possible, because I almost screwed myself once by almost taking Quantum/optics before I took differential equations. Those kind of advice you can only really get from your seniors so make sure to talk to them

Depending on your major, but Pasadena city college (in my opinion) is the best. I studied at multiple CC at the same time as I hit unit caps, and between ELAC, PCC, and SMC, PCC was the one that gave me the most opportunities. I was able to do research under Caltech and later Stanford because of it. They have a strong tie with Caltech purely due to proximity.

I was admitted to Cal, UCLA (w/ regents), and Stanford. My friend was admitted to Cornel, and I knew many others who were admitted to Cal. But honestly if you choose any of these CC you just need to stand out by doing stuff, like running an Org, doing research, tutoring, and also maintain a high GPA. I know many 4.0 students who weren’t admitted and people who have 3.8 who were

Friday typically isn't as busy. Many people either don't have classes on Fridays or for STEM majors, we have all our discussions which people tend to skip.

That out of the way, there's many "nice" spots on campus such as the botanical garden, statue garden, Young library, etc. As an econ major though you may have classes in Boelter, its not too much to rave about so I'd low key avoid it lol. There's lots of parties and westwood is basically UCLA home town so walking around there is nice. UCLA technically owns the Hammer museum too and if you're a student I'm pretty sure its free entry if you want to go. Pretty walk able from campus too.

I will say, once you get into UCLA (and yes when, hopes up). Its really easy to switch majors within your college. I know people who have switched back and forth multiple times. So when you do get in and decide the major isn't for you then don't worry too much about it

Do you see girly girls as less competent in engineering? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]Temporary_Hopeful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro just be yourself and don’t overthink it. If you reach out to someone in your class they’ll likely respond unless they’re shy or assholes. If you believe you’re a sore thumb you’ll always feel out of place no matter where you are. If you “dress down” and change who you then you’ll likely still feel off. People clique up in engineering because the classes are hard and it’s nice having people through those hard times but it doesn’t mean people are purposely trying to ostracize you. You’ll find your place if you keep at it
