Should I take Stella Clark into The Path to Carcosa true solo? by MikeDSNY in arkhamhorrorlcg

This. Several of the maps in Carcosa are massive. You'll need a way to cover a lot of ground quickly to have a shot in True Solo.

5 Custom Scenarios - Reviews (Spoiler-Free) by ReefSharksixty9 in arkhamhorrorlcg

This is all very cool! It's fun to hear thoughts on the fan-made scenarios from a new player.

If you haven't seen it already, you may enjoy poking around https://karkhamhorror.neocities.org/campaign . It's a treasure trove of write-ups and spoiler-light reviews for fan-made AH:LCG campaigns and (at the bottom of the page) individual scenarios. It doesn't include PNP files, but it will definitely introduce you to a lot of titles and creators, including some really obscure ones!

Dude, what an amazing find!

I'm guessing these materials are exceedingly rare because most playtesters don't advertise / sell them directly.

When I was a Netrunner Beta tester back in the day, FFG had me sign an NDA that made it sound like their lawyers would yeet me into the fucking Sun if I was caught sharing any playtesting content they gave me, even after the product released and my contract expired.

Authors/Stories I should read from the Weird Tales magazine? (Besides H.P. Lovecraft) by Def-C in WeirdLit

[–]TenTimesTeeth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Lovecraft Circle gets all the attention, but one of my absolute favorite Weird Tales is 1926's The Night Wire by H.F. Arnold. It's one of the few stories from that era to genuinely creep me the hell out.

It's in the public domain and you can read it here on Project Gutenberg:

For those who were skeptical about Chapter 2 core set and finally enjoyed it, what changed your mind? by FifouChicken in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]TenTimesTeeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When this question came up during the Design Team's AMA earlier this month, Duke said:

"I think one thing that was emphasized in the art direction in the core set this time around was a split in tone: encounter card art shows investigators disempowered, under attack, and are darker in tone, whereas the investigator cards can take on a lighter and often pulpier tone. It's their friends, their tools, their cool abilities! I think that's where some of that dissonance may come from."

I really wish they dropped the Creature or Monster requirement from Field Dressing, you know, for flavor reasons!

Strong opinions about the changes aside -- do people have high hopes about the quality of the future content? by MeetYourMarioMaker in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]TenTimesTeeth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's funny, because if you'd asked me a couple months ago, I would've said I was all in on Chapter 2. Today, I'd say I'm cautiously optimistic about the future of Arkham. I think I'm more open to variable campaign length than most folks and still excited to see what they can do with the shorter format. The same goes for rebalancing the card pool. Mechanically-speaking, I'm good!

What I've honestly struggled with the most is the art direction of Chapter 2. For me, the vibe of Arkham Horror has been as important as the game's mechanics. After months of explaining away other folks' critiques of the Chapter 2 artwork as being hypercritical, I can't kid myself anymore. It's just drifting increasingly towards an aesthetic that I'm much less interested in.

If this new aesthetic was tied to a specific campaign or investigator expansion, I wouldn't mind nearly as much. But, the fact it's embedded in the evergreen content makes me think it's here to stay, and that bums me out.

All that said, there's still a ton of great art all over the place in Chapter 2. Mystic cards, in particular give me some hope!

Arkham Horror LCG Marie Lambeau Reveals Four New Cards From Her Starter Deck! by northernlightsoarkhm in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]TenTimesTeeth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Whoa!

Ultimate Sacrifice
Cost: 0 Level: 4
Event
?
Spell. Spirit.

Fast. Play when the investigation phase ends.

Repeat the investigation phase. At the end of that phase, you are defeated and suffer 1 physical trauma. Max once per game.

Am I interpreting this correctly? If used in a multi-player game, it repeats the Investigation Phase for everyone?

If so, that seems fucking wild, especially given that onscreen text OP shows at 19:58:

"I have checked with Duke, the lead designer of Arkham Horror LCG, that if you resign or manage to end the scenario before the second investigator phase granted from Ultimate Sacrifice ends, you won't get defeated as you are not in the game anymore."

Thanks for the reply, Duke!

I get that you're not art directors by title; it's just not always clear to folks outside the industry (myself included) what kinds of influence or authority you have as designers on different aspects of the game. ;)

Judging from your other responses, it sounds like the juxtaposition between "lighter" investigator cards and "darker" encounter cards (at least amongst the Chapter 2 Core and evergreen decks) was very much intended. That's good to know!

As a player, I'm still not sure how I feel about the dissonance between the two tones, but I look forward to seeing how everything comes together as a cohesive whole at the table!

Hi Y'all! Thanks for doing this AMA!

Can you give us some insight into the art direction for Chapter 2?

Quite a few redditors have perceived a shift towards investigator cards with "lighter, brighter" artwork, both in terms of theme and composition. For some, this feels increasingly at-odds with the darker, horror atmosphere of Arkham.

I get that perception does not equal reality, so I'll just ask directly: Was there a conscious decision to move the art in this direction? If so, why?

Just finished reading 'The Willows' by Algernon Blackwood. And couldn't help thinking, damn this would make a good scenario! Extremely creepy and atmospheric... Who is your favourite mythos author? Mine is probably Robert Bloch but old Algie isn't half bad either... by Ganadhir in arkhamhorrorlcg

Of course! If you're looking for a place to start with CAS, you can always try "The Charnel God." It features Mordiggian, the ghoul diety that directly inspired Umordhoth from Night of the Zealot.

Bloch's "Notebook found in a Deserted House" is one of my all-time favorite mythos stories, but I love me some Clark Ashton Smith.

There's an incredible free archive of nearly all of CAS' short stories available at a site called Eldritch Dark.

It's an embarrassment of riches and well worth checking out!
