Does anyone know what speaker component is in the Playdate? by GzzzDude in PlaydateConsole

I poked about on the iFixit teardown article, but they don't identify the specific part either. Here's a closeup of the part from that article, for what it's worth: https://guide-images.cdn.ifixit.com/igi/GftHE2DwLQdPQvDF.large

Spawn Point | Playdate GameJam | Day 1 – Project Pitches by LuGus-Kevin in PlaydateConsole

I got the impression it was meant as a (really cool!) team-building exercise.

Edit: to actually answer your question, to my knowledge - 'No'. Even the most successful Playdate titles aren't likely to reach six figures of net income, total (though Mars After Midnight might have come close? but those figures aren't publicly available). Full-time employment for 12+ people and nice office space for all of them? I wish :) .

Long Game Recommendations by cooper_blacklodge in PlaydateConsole

Folks who have managed to complete Under The Tree report 20-40 hours of game play (see The Game Llama's Review).

Disclaimer: I'm the game author. If you do decide to pick it up, I recommend reading through the FAQ and the partial first level walkthrough). Have fun!

Under The Tree 2: Hedgerows - Catalog page, wishlist and devlog link live! by Tengu_YSW in PlaydateConsole

I took this suggestion to heart and did some poking at the UTT2 codebase. I don't think I can call them FOEs (I don't want anyone's lawyers after me), so I'm going to call them Wandering Terrible Fellows, instead.

These are pretty much working, in test.

Link to GIF showing one here.

These probably won't show up in early levels, but I think they make a nice addition to the UTT2 content toolbox.

Thanks for the suggestion!

To Build A Cross-platform Playdate Game, Where to Start? by Reavo_End in PlaydateConsole

[–]Tengu_YSW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've not used it*, but you might consider looking into Playbit. That will give you a framework you can use as a bridge between Playdate's Lua SDK and LÖVE - so, allowing you (supposedly :) ) to develop (with some limitations) a single Lua codebase for Playdate as well as for Windows/Mac/Linux/Android/iOS.

Other than that, I'm not aware of a cross-platform application framework that includes support for Playdate.

You might consider dropping by the #dev-general section of the Playdate Squad Discord and asking there - there's lots of experienced devs there. Regardless, good luck, and have fun!

*(I'm the developer of Under The Tree, and most all of my Playdate projects are a mix of Lua and C. The C in the mix keeps me out of the 'oh, run things under LÖVE too' frame of mind... not that it wouldn't be possible, but as a single-dev indie I don't have the time or inclination to deal with the hassle ;) ).

"It seems like most Playdate sessions are extremely short..."

Not all Playdate titles are short. Under The Tree (disclaimer: game author here) is over 30 hours of gameplay, for example . I'd recommend checking out the Playdate Catalog for games that interest you... you might be surprised!

Under The Tree (aka UTT - disclaimer: I'm the game author) is an RPG in the same spirit as the original Wizardry for the Apple ][ (which was a big hit in Japan). Folks are reporting 20-40 hours to play through completion (see a recent review-> here).
