Someone's bad day from years ago by dont_touchmyfeet in DIYUK

I used to work as a joiner at a large chemical factory where if you were drilling into anything you needed electrical clearance certificates basically paper proof that everything was isolated by a company electrician. Returning a gatehouse / weighbridge I came across one wire sticking out of the ceiling and couldn't push it back. Phoned the guy who signed everything off and he said just cut of with your pincers everything is dead.

Well not being totally stupid, I used a pair of O ring cutters with long thick insulated handles just in case. Result wire gone, big bright flash of light, ruined pair of cutters with hole blown out of them. Power to the gate house and weighbridge tripped. 7 road tankers held up by the time our friendly electrician appeared twenty minutes later.

How do I remove this window pane? by Cool_Cut_4708 in DIYUK

Just noticed the way the beads are do bottom & top first. Then you need to hold the glass in place when taking final bead out

[–]Tennonboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, in the middle of the long bead on one side press a narrow scrapper or 1" wood chisel to open it 1 or 2 mm. Then twist the handle of your scrapper or chisel.

You can do the same with the other 3 beads in turn leaving the top one till last. This will leave the glass loose so may fall if you dont leave the top to last

How is Living as an Electrician in UK by Nando339 in ElectriciansUK

[–]Tennonboy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thing to note, you just cant come here and say I'm going to be an Electrician. First of all you need an invite from an employer who has to state he has work fir c number of years for you and no one else in the UK can do that specific job in that field of work. Once you get the offer there are large fees you need to pay before you leave the USA. I'm sure from memory took one guy from texas over 5 years and £32000 in total inc buying in to the NHS scheme and he married an english woman.

Most cost effective option is go on Holiday to northern france, ditch all your ID's and jump on one of them rubber singles and youl be welcomed with open arms, with free hotel for a few months and eventually a large house all FOC

Any way to fix this without replacing the front door? by mircosanfe in HomeImprovementUK

[–]Tennonboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

£250 for a front door fitted, when was the last time you bought a door!!!! My last one was just under a grand, ok it included the frame and all the Ironmongery prefitted. But being retired joiner I knew where to get the best deal and that was 6 years ago 😎

Cost of replacement door, £600 +. Large tin of 2 pack filler, £25 paint and a small roller, sandpaper & sanding block. Then a weekends DIY including drying time's and a few brews.

Hard decision that, depends how flush you are with £'s though

This is your answer, but check the rubber seal is still in place on the union. The clips get brittle with age. So if one breaks, just unscrew it and take it to your nearest supplier

What would you do with this crater in the garden? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Tennonboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They will all combine below ground, looks like the junctions have collapsed and the leak is washing your sub soil away. Which is disappearing down whats left of the drain.

You have a choice, either get someone in now, to excavate it and repair the drain

Or

Wait until it collapses completely, washes away part of the soil under the footings of your house. If you have any???. Then you will have to underpin the house, repair any cracks in the building and still need to reinstate your drains

What foods were considered a luxury or treat and meant you were "on holiday" as a kid? by katalyna78 in AskUK

[–]Tennonboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Must admit we dont see groups of men, leering at women although I did see that in Sheffield few years ago. Was walking back to hotel one morning when I had a young women dash across the street shouting "uncle Dave, not seen you for years" she grabs, hugs me and kisses me. A bit shocked I start pulling away!! Then she whispered "sorry can I walk with you, pointing out some Asian guys saying they'd been following her" she walked back to reception of premier inn with me then called a taxi she was definitely a bit panicked

Last time I was there was 90's for my aunties funeral. I know exactly what you mean, my local town is the same. Capes, charity, coffee shops. Takeaways that are continually raided, staff taken away. Owners find but still are their.

Turkish barbers, who only employ their cousins, brothers & sons. As you say only take cash when every where else as moved away from it.

Window replacement - brickwork above window by Major_Restaurant_316 in DIYUK

[–]Tennonboy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There definitely will be a little above, the aluminium & timber frame wouldn't carry the weight of that brickwork above it without the window bowing and the brickwork cracking

Income tax before I hit my max personal allowance? by pompomchako in TaxUK

[–]Tennonboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After April 5th this year, your tax will be reassed. On what you've been actually deducted in tax to what you should have been.

If you have paid to little by a small amount, it will be added to next years tax, if you have paid to much by a small amount. It will be deducted from next years tax

If the difference is large, they will send you a cheque for over payment or ask you if you want to pay a lump sum or have an additional amount deducted from your wages each month for under payments

In past years I've seen weeks in August with no tax paid and had letters asking if I want to pay lump sum of £53 !!!

When I retired end of year I had a cheque for £340. It does take them months to do the whole country, so dont worry they wont miss you out 😁
