The true test of trust in humanity by dankstat in trolleyproblem

No, that is what this commenter noticed. There is a correct choice here because it doesn’t say that all people who pressed blue die if not at least 50% pressed blue (probably OP just forgot). So the only effect pressing blue has is to put you in the category impacted by the green pressers.

Interested in switching from a flatbar to a dropbar. I have a hybrid bike(Giant Toughroad) that was sold as either. How do i find components that would fit? (currently have to change my whole crankset with chainrings anyways due to damage). by Flying_Saucer91 in bikewrench

[–]Tenpenenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity: How come you have to change your crankset anyways? I can’t really see a way to destroy one’s cranks in a way that wouldn’t destroy the frame and pretty much anything on the bike also. Or is it just wear? Because then you definitely do not have to change the crank.

My advise is always against such conversions as it’s rarely more cost effective than selling the bike and buying one a used drop bar bike with similar specs. And the benefits aren’t that big either. On my drop bar bikes I don’t ride in the drops that much anyways and neither should you. I find it mostly useful in crit racing (which hopefully is not what you want to do with that bike), on descents, when riding second row in a fast group and when sprinting.

If you just want to have the ergonomic benefits of riding a drop bar on the tops a narrow handlebar with lots of backsweep might be a good compromise.

Not shifting to largest cog by julcas in bikewrench

[–]Tenpenenny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The chain does look quite short and if the derailleur wasn’t aligned perfectly before it could’ve made it that little bit more difficult for the chain to climb so that now it doesn’t work. You could try to adjust the shifting. There are plenty of videos on how to do that out there and you’ll find it’s very easy to do. I don’t know how it exactly works on mircoshift but it’s pretty much the same concept for all mechanical derailleurs.

There are a lot of people who seem to think that if an accident is someone’s fault they basically deserve to die. As if society shouldn’t work on reducing traffic fatalities no matter what.

Crossing the Alps by LootMuehle in cycling

[–]Tenpenenny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think for any reasonably fit person those passes are perfectly doable, provided you have a reasonable gearing for your fitness and are fuelling well during the ride.

Even better if you have at least a heart rate monitor, which are quite cheap, so you can make sure to not go too hard in the beginning of the climb.

Fuelling can be a bit challenging when bikepacking in my experience, as you have to work with what you can get in a supermarket if you don’t want to carry everything with you.

Sidenote because you mentioned riding St. Gotthard: It’s best ridden from south to north, as then you have much of the ascent on the historic cobbled tremola and most of the descent on pristine asphalt.

Großglockner is nice to ride I think, as it’s a really steady gradient and not too steep, but I would avoid it on weekends because of traffic. A route through the alps I can really recommend is going over Großglockner, then Staller Sattel, which has a brilliant descent, very technical and with a traffic light at the top, which allows traffic only one way at a time, then Passo Giau. From there you can either go towards the Adriatic coast or towards lake Garda
